Finally, in March of 1703, the Adventure set sail for India. The winds were good until we got near Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa. Then a strong wind began to blow. We were trapped in the wind for twenty days. After many hours, the wind finally stopped and the sea became quieter. The storm had blown the Adventure hundreds of kilometers to the east.
“Where are we?” I asked the captain.
“I can’t tell for sure.” He said, “we are running out of water. We must reach land soon to fill our water barrels (桶).” Many days passed and we saw nothing but the sea. One morning, before everyone died of thirst, a sailor cried out, “Land!” Everyone on the ship was silent for a second. And quickly the ship sailed closer to the land. The sailors suddenly became turnultuous and all cheered.
“You men,” said the captain to the sailors, “take the rowboats and go. Fill the water barrels with fresh water.”
“Captain,” I said, “may I go with them to take a look at this place?”
“Of course,” he replied. “You can tell me later what it is like.”
When the rowboats reached the coast, one of the sailors said, “we will have to walk along the coast to look for fresh water.”
“I’m going to take a little walk,” I told them. “I will meet you back here in an hour.”
I walked about a kilometer, enjoying being on land again. Then I turned and walked back to meet the sailors.
When I arrived on the beach, the sailors were not there. They were in the rowboats, rowing as fast as they could toward the Adventure. I was going to shout out to them when I saw a very huge man walking through the sea. I was trying to catch up with the rowboats. The sailors were almost at the ship, and I could see that the huge man would not be able to catch them. Instead, it was coming towards me. Great fear went through my mind.
4. What happened when they got near the east coast of Africa?
A. They decided to set sail for India. B. The captain lost his sense of direction.
C. A storm came and blew the ship heavily. D. The captain couldn’t tell where they were.
5. What does the underlined word “turnultuous” most probably mean?
A. sad B. excited C. bored D. relaxed
6. Why did the writer get off the ship after reaching the land?
A. Because he planned to help get fresh water for everyone.
B. Because he got tired of travelling and decided to live on the land.
C. Because he wanted to take a walk and look around.
D. Because he was looking for the huge man on the land.
7. What would most probably happen next?
A. The writer saw the sailors were caught by the huge man.
B. The sailors failed to get on the ship because it was too far away
C. The writer tried to run away as fast as possible.
D. The huge man caught the captain and controlled the ship.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. C

Some Christmas traditions are pretty standard in mainstream (主流) American culture: put up the tree, string up the lights, visit grandma, and so on.
Then there’s the one my Colombian family does every year: the Novena de Aguinaldos. We pray (祈祷) for nine days without a stop, and this Novena counts down the nine days before Christmas. Most Americans have never heard of it, but in Colombia, it’s a big deal.
Like all good traditions, especially around the holidays, this tradition is about community and getting together with friends and family. My family immigrated (移民) from Colombia when I was just two months old. Every year, we gather with a group of Colombian friends for as many of the nine nights as we can.
There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can — whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos — Spanish Christmas carols (颂歌) come.
I’ve lived my whole life in the US. There’s not a lot of Colombian culture that we still hang onto. Why do we still carry on with the tradition of celebrating the Novenas, then?
When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere — not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Novenas were nothing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Colombia, the Novenas became the heart of our community.
But our Novenas are starting to feel a little more breakable. It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries.
8. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of celebrating the Novena.
B. The development of a Colombian tradition.
C. The background of the Colombian family.
D. The differences between the Novena and Christmas.
9. Why does the Colombian family celebrate the Novena?
A. To remember their dead friends. B. To find a sense of belonging.
C. To show their respect for Americans. D. To understand the local culture.
10. What makes celebrating the Novena difficult for the Colombian family?
A. Lack of money. B. Their separate busy life.
C. American laws. D. Friends’ complaints.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Growing Up B. Colorful Culture
C. Exploring American Christmas Traditions D. Colombian Family’s Novena in the US
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. D

When Genentech, a highly influential Swedish medical company, got the license for the lung-treating medicine Vixarelimab from another company, Artificial Intelligence (AI) brought an unexpected discovery: the drug could also be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease. This vividly shows the amazing potential of AI in the field of drug research and development(R&D).
The application of AI in the industry is on an upward tendency. Data (数据) from the Boston Consulting Group shows the number of clinical (临床的) experiments using AI in finding and designing molecules — the key stages of drug R&D — has jumped to 67 in 2023 from only 27 in 2021. AstraZeneca, British drug giant, is a good example of AI’s influence. The company used AI to cut the time for molecule design from years to just months or even weeks. Similarly, London-based GSK has recognized the potential of AI across its entire R&D process.
However, the path to fully integrating AI into medical R&D is anything but even. “There is a data problem, a people problem and a bit of a strategy problem,” said Thomas Clozel, CEO and co-founder of Owkin, a Paris-based company that applies AI to medical research. Acquiring data and AI skills is among the key factors medical companies are facing to unlock the technology’s potential. Clozel noted medical companies’ focus on short-term results and their difficulties in attracting and keeping data scientists influence the industry’s embrace of AI.
To overcome these problems, medical companies are forming partnerships with AI experts to employ AI technology in their operations. Eli Lilly, Moderna, and Sanofi have joined forces with ChatGPT’s developer, OpenAI. Meanwhile, Novartis and Eli Lilly have teamed up with Isomorphic Labs, a company founded and led by Nobel Prize winner Demis Hassabis and owned by Alphabet. While the application of AI in this field is still at its early stage and may take years to fully realize its potential, medical companies are highly keen to improve the long and costly drug-development process with AI, finally leading to more efficient and effective drug discoveries.
12. According to the article what did AI discover about Vixarelimab?
A. Vixarelimab got the license for drug R&D.
B. Vixarelimab is ineffective for lung diseases.
C. Vixarelimab has an amazing potential to influence AI.
D. Vixarelimab can treat another disease besides lung problems.
13. What can we infer from the change of clinical experiments with AI?
A. Medical companies are losing interest in AI.
B. AI has not shown advantages in clinical experiments as expected.
C. The application of AI in the medical industry is becoming increasingly popular.
D. AI has replaced the traditional methods in drug development.
14. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest?
A. The way to the medical companies is easy to find with the help of AI.
B. The process of using AI in medical R&D is smooth.
C. The problems in embracing AI are even bigger for medical industry.
D. The journey of applying AI to medical industry is filled with challenges.
15. What does the writer think about the future of AI in the medical industry?
A. AI will never be successfully applied in the medical industry.
B. Medical companies will stop partnering with the AI experts.
C. AI will have great potential in this industry despite all the challenges.
D. Drug R&D process will be made longer and more costly with AI.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.
Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker inviting him over for a cup of tea.
The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.
There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic (阁楼), but he was not sure if that was a good place.
Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up the chimney (烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.

【答案】范文
He was in no mood for singing and found it difficult to focus on his work. He was too worried about the safety of his gold. When he was working, he couldn’t help running in and out again and again to see if his gold was all right. And he kept removing the bag from one place to another to keep it safe. What’s worse, he lay awake all night because he was always trying to count the gold. Worst of all, the children no longer came to see him.
At last the shoemaker felt so unhappy that he took his bag of gold and ran next door to the rich man. He handed the bag of gold to the rich man the moment he opened the door. “Please take back your gold,” he said. “The worry of it is making me upset all day and night, and I have lost all of my friends. I would rather be a poor shoemaker as I was before.” The rich man was amazed. Before he could say a word, the shoemaker had left. From then on, the shoemaker was happy again and sang all day long at his work.

12. According to the article, what did AI discover about Vixarelimab?
C The application of AI in the medical industry is becoming increasingly popular.
