B Many people some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. One American woman in Texas waited a long time for her chance to reach that goal. Janet Fein, born in 1934, received her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) from the University of Texas in 2018. Fein has had a full life. She raised five children and then had a career as a secretary (秘书) until she retired at age 77. But even then, she was not ready to take it easy and rest during a well-earned retirement. She decided to major in sociology. Fein grew up in the Bronx area of New York City. In high school, she just wanted to finish and get a job. After graduating early, at the age of 16, she went to work as a secretary. After getting married, she spent 18 years staying home with her children. She held several jobs throughout her life, including being a secretary at a Dallas hospital. That is the job she retired from in 2011. She received an associate degree in 1995. But she also wanted to earn a bachelor’s degree. Fein took part in a state program that lets people who are 65 and older take free classes at public universities in Texas. She kept going to class even as her health condition worsened. During her studies, it became necessary for her to use a walker to get around and she required oxygen. She also developed knee problems. So, Fein took online classes to finish the last part of her degree requirements. Renee Brown is one of Fein’s caregivers. She says Fein has also inspired her. At 53, she plans to begin nursing school to further her career. Brown says Fein told her, “Renee, you can do it. If I can do it you also can do it, and you will feel so good about it.” 4. When did Janet Fein start to work? A. In 1952. B. In 1950. C. In 1995. D. In 2012. 5. What does she study for her bachelor’s degree? A. Sociology. B. Secretary. C. History. D. Health. 6. What does the underlined word “inspired” probably mean in the last paragraph? A. Shock. B. Disappoint. C. Employ. D. Encourage. 7. What can we learn from Janet Fein’s story? A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. It is never too late to learn. C. Practice makes perfect. D. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. C More than half of Americans have felt the influence (影响) of extreme heat on health, according to a survey. That percentage is even higher in California, where heat is the top problem, reported by 71% of those surveyed. “California does have low levels of air conditioning in homes, maybe because it has cool wind in many parts, but when an extreme heat event comes and there’s no cool air available, you are in trouble,” said David Eisenman, a health researcher. “So you are seeing this higher number.” Luz Rivas from Los Angeles grew up in a home without air conditioning. “Families like mine have suffered from heat for years,” said Rivas. On hot days, her mother used to take her to the mall to cool down. “Now that these heat waves are getting longer, methods used in the past aren’t going to work as well,” Rivas added. The California Environment Protection Agency will create a heat wave ranking (热浪排名) system to give public warnings. It’s supposed to help the public, especially those outdoor workers, know the seriousness of the heat wave and then learn what they should do. The idea is backed up (支持) widely. Many health researchers point out the health risks of heat are worse for outdoor workers, saying that in summer, there’s an 8% increase in deaths on the hottest days. Lawmakers of California are also considering making indoor cooling a housing right. It can especially help renters like Minerva Contreras, a mother of two living near Bakersfield. Her neighbourhood has seen many days with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. “It’s very difficult because it’s like not being able to breathe,” said Contreras. Indoor cooling standards are valued by renters but may face a serious fight, and many house owners think the standards fail to consider the variety of climates in the state. For now, the cost of keeping cool for renters mostly falls on them. Contreras doesn’t hold much hope that California will pass cooling standards, saying, “But I would like it very much.” 8. What can we learn about Californians? A. They are more affected by hot weather. B. They can be more adapted to hot weather. C. They are more concerned about their health. D. They always have a bigger demand for air conditioning. 9. How is the method of cooling down in the mall according to Rivas in paragraph 2? A. It is a marketing strategy. B. It is worthy of a try. C. It is not as useful as before. D It has gained popularity. 10. Why does the author mention the increase of deaths on hot days? A. To have pity on outdoor workers. B. To prove the necessity of the system. C. To tell outdoor workers to work harder. D. To warn people to fight against the heat outside. 11. What does Contreras think of passing indoor cooling standards? A. Amusing. B. Challenging. C. Shocking. D. Puzzling. D The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 35 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue. 12. What is the best possible title of the passage? A. Drug and Food B. Cancer and Health C. Food and Health D. Health and Drug 13. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Drugs are always given to animals for medical reasons B. Some of the additives in our food are added to the food itself and some are given to the living animals. C. Researchers have known about the potential dangers of food additives for over thirty-five years. D. Food may cause forty percent of cancer in world. 14. How has science done something harmful to mankind? A. Because of science, diseases caused by polluted food haven been virtually eliminated. B. It has caused a lack of information concerning the value of food. C. Because of the application of science, some potentially harmful substances have been added to food. D. The scientists have preserved the color of meats, but not of vegetables. 15. The underlined word “carcinogenic” most nearly means “_____”. A. trouble-making B. color-retaining C. money-making D. cancer-causing How to Love Your Parents Even if you think that your parents are mean at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes! After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked. Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel, no matches. After a day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well. Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams. I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent. Frightened by the flames, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside. Without any hesitation, I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him, and dragged him to the icy lake. We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt. Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our situation. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年度第二学期高一年级期中考试 英语试题 2025.4 考试时间 120分钟,总分 150分 第一部分 听力 (共30分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. 4. B 5. A 6. D 7. Brown says Fein told her, ‘Renee, you can do it. If I can do it you also can do it, and you will feel so good about it.’(53岁时,她计划进入护理学校深造。 通读全文,结合第一段“Many people, some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. She decided to major in sociology.(她养育了5个孩子,之后一直从事秘书工作,直到77岁退休。 B。 C More than half of Americans have felt the influence (影响) of extreme heat on health, according to a survey. It can especially help renters like Minerva Contreras a mother of two living near Bakersfield. D. It has gained popularity. C. Shocking. D. Puzzling. A 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“That percentage is even higher in California, where heat is the top problem, reported by 71% of those surveyed.(在加州,这一比例甚至更高,71%的受访者表示,高温是首要问题)”可知,加利福尼亚人受炎热天气的影响更大。故选A。 根据第三段中“On hot days, her mother used to take her to the mall to cool down. “Now that these heat waves are getting longer, methods used in the past aren’t going to work as well,” Rivas added.(在炎热的日子里,她母亲过去常带她去商场乘凉。‘现在热浪越来越长,过去的方法不再那么有效了,”里瓦斯补充道)”可知,Rivas认为,在商场降温的方法不如以前有用了。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中“The California Environment Protection Agency will create a heat wave ranking (热浪排名) system to give public warnings. It’s supposed to help the public, especially those outdoor workers, know the seriousness of the heat wave and then learn what they should do. The idea is backed up (支持) widely. Many health researchers point out the health risks of heat are worse for outdoor workers, saying that in summer, there’s an 8% increase in deaths on the hottest days.(加州环境保护局将建立一个热浪排名系统,向公众发出警告。 根据最后一段中“Indoor cooling standards are valued by renters but may face a serious fight, and many house owners think the standards fail to consider the variety of climates in the state. For now, the cost of keeping cool for renters mostly falls on them. Contreras doesn’t hold much hope that California will pass cooling standards, saying, “But I would like it very much.”(室内制冷标准受到租户的重视,但可能面临激烈的斗争,许多房主认为这些标准没有考虑到该州气候的多样性。 B。 D The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. A. trouble-making B. color-retaining C. money-making D. cancer-causing 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. 通读全文,并根据第一段“The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat ,it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat.(我们吃的食物似乎对我们的健康有深远的影响。 根据第二段中“Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons.(有时给动物服用类似的药物不是出于医疗目的,而是出于经济原因)”可知,给动物服用药物并不总是出于医疗目的,而是出于经济原因。 故选A。 根据第二段中“In 1945, about 35 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer.(1945年,也就是大约35年前,政府研究人员意识到硝酸盐和其他食品添加剂会致癌,硝酸盐通常用于肉类保色)”可知,由于科学的应用,一些有潜在危险的物质被添加到了食物中。 根据第二段中“In 1945, about 35 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. How to Love Your Parents Even if you think that your parents are mean at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Allen was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest. Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Allen and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Allen began to treat me more like a friend rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day. 词汇激活 行为类 ①烧成灰烬:burn into ashes/burn to a cinder ②想知道:wonder/want to know ③持续:continue/last 情绪类 ①不确定的:unsure/uncertain ②焦虑地:Anxiously /Worriedly 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
