A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ①②③ B The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important role in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters remain today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed. Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then they use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time. However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a “mountain” was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays. Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by combining two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a “man” and a “tree”. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a “square”. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other. Though these kinds of characters indicate meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a method was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way. In the 1950s, the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to making learning to read and write more understandable to the general population, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland. 29. The writer introduced the Chinese characters by ________. A. giving examples B. providing causes C. expressing opinions D. comparing facts 30. The following sentence should be placed at the beginning of ________. Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects. A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 2 31. Which Chinese character used the underlined (画线的) method? A. B. C. D. 32. What can we learn from the passage? A. Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before. B. Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by a large number of people. C Chinese characters existed in the very beginning and remain today like other ancient symbols. D. Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together. C It is so easy to describe people as being talented. Just look at any headline praising an artwork, a play, or a great feat, and you are likely to see the word “talented” or “gifted”. However, is being talented a true marker of success? Some people believe that talent plays a key role in achieving success fast. Those with natural abilities in a particular field can often gain success rapidly with less effort. For example, a person with a natural ear for music may find it easier to learn to play an instrument. Take a look at Wolfgang Mozart. He composed his first musical masterpiece (杰作) at the age of 5. And at the age of 6, he went on his first tours to perform his abilities for the world. In the process of highlighting (强调) the “natural” gifts of achievers, hard work can be overlooked (忽视). The result is that many “talents” believe they only need to depend on their innate (天生的) abilities in order to produce great works. Inevitably, this can lead to disappointment, frustration, and even mental health problems, because the reality is that talent alone is not enough. One is often led to believe that being naturally gifted is the prerequisite (先决条件) for success in any field. But almost every example of a big achievement involves some degree of hard work. Aside from working hard, talent can only become useful if the owner of that talent does what is necessary to expand (拓展) it. If your talent is just being good at playing the guitar, for instance, that ability can only get you so far because there are many other people who also know their way around the instrument. How will you set yourself apart from the crowd? You would do so by finding ways to expand your guitar-playing capabilities, whether that means learning new finger tricks or mastering different types of guitars. Then you will be more successful than others. Nothing is wrong with having natural abilities. After all, everyone is born to be good at something. However, finding success at any level, and in any field, requires more than talent. The relationships you create with people and habits you develop also play a role in your ability to develop your career. But, ultimately, working hard is the main factor as to how far you can go. 33. The writer uses the example of Mozart to tell us that ________. A. natural abilities can help speed up success B. being famous should be as early as possible C. talent can take the place of effort completely D. everyone is born to be good at something 34. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The result of an art competition. B. The achievements of famous talents. C. The problems caused by highlighting innate abilities. D. The process of producing great works by talents. 35. What can we learn from the passage? A. Hard work helps people find out their natural abilities easily. B. Almost every great achievement requires a certain amount of effort. C. Relationships with people and habits are more important than talent. D. Talented people are more likely to succeed than hard-working people. 36. The writer probably agrees that ________. A. hard work brings people more success than talent does B. talent gives people a head start in achievements in any field C. having talent is not enough to ensure success unless talent is improved D. hard work is no more necessary unless it is done by people successfully D The Marionette, as soon as his hunger was appeased, started to grumble and cry, “I want a new pair of feet.” But Geppetto, in order to punish him for his mischef (淘气), let him alone the whole morning. After dinner, Geppetto said to him, “Why should I make your feet over again? To see you run away from home once more?” “I promise you,” answered the Marionette, sobbing, “that from now on I’ll be good...” “Boys always promise that when they want somethıng,” said Geppetto. “I promise to go to school every day, to study, and to succeed.” “Boys always sing that song when they want their own will.” “But I am not like other boys! I am better than all of them and I always tell the truth. I promise you, Father, that I’ll learn a trade, and I’ll be the comfort and staff of your old age.” Geppetto, though trying to look very strict, felt his eyes filled with tears and his heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said no more, but took out his tools and two pieces of wood. He set out to work diligently. In less than an hour the feet were finished, two slender, nimble (灵活的) little feet, strong and quick, as if they were made by an artist. “Close your eyes and sleep!” Geppetto then said to the Marionette. Pinocchio closed his eyes and pretended (假装) to be asleep, when Geppetto stuck on the two feet with a bit of glue melted in an eggshell, doing his work so well that the joint could hardly be seen. As soon as the Marionette felt his new feet, he gave one leap from the table and started to skip and jump around, as if he had lost his head from joy. “To show you how grateful I am to you, Father, I’ll go to school now. But to go to school. I need a suit of clothes.” Geppetto did not have a penny in his pocket, so he made his son a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap from a bit of dough. Pinocchio ran to look at himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so happy that he said proudly, “Now I look like a gentleman.” “Truly,” answered Geppetto. “But remember that fine clothes do not make the man unless they be neat and clean.” “Very true,” answered Pinocchio, “but, in order to go to school, I still need something very important.” “What is it?” “An A-B-C book.” Putting on his old coat, full of darns and patches (补丁), Geppetto ran out of the house without another word. After a while he returned. In his hands, he had the A-B-C book for his son, but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was in his shirtsleeves and the day was cold. “Where’s your coat, Father?” “I have sold it.” “Why did you sell it?” “It’s too warm.” Pinocchio understood the answer in a twinkling of an eye, and was unable to restrain his tears. He jumped on his father’s neck and kissed him over and over. — Adapted from The Adventures of Pinocchio 37. According to the story, which of the following character relationships is correct? A. Simon was shocked. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but I can’t leave my brother.” The teacher replied, “You won’t have to. I’ve seen Pedro’s designs. C. Chinese characters existed in the very beginning and remain today like other ancient symbols. D. Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together. 【答案】29. A 30. B 31. D 32. A. hard work brings people more success than talent does B. talent gives people a head start in achievements in any field C. having talent is not enough to ensure success unless talent is improved D. hard work is no more necessary unless it is done by people successfully 【答案】33. According to the story which of the following character relationships is correct? A. And when the first one became an engineer, he would pay for the other to go to school. They flipped (轻掷) a coin. Simon won. But he said, “I can’t go. You are much smarter than me.” Pedro convinced him to go. Simon headed off to school and Pedro worked hard to make money to pay for his schooling. Simon was the hardest-working student there. He soon became known as the best student. But he always told people that his brother was the really smart one. He would proudly show everyone Pedro’s designs of machines. Then, near the end of the first year of school, there was an accident in the mine. Pedro was hurt quite badly and would never be able to work in the mine again. Without money, Simon had to quit school. He took care of his brother, and they were both terribly sad. One day, a car pulled up to their little house and out came Simon’s teacher. “Simon, we want you to come back,” said his teacher. Simon was shocked. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but I can’t leave my brother.” The teacher replied, “You won’t have to. I’ve seen Pedro’s designs.
