三、阅读理解 (30分)

There are many idioms or sayings in English that we use when we want to describe relationships between and among friends. Here are a few to practice with your friends.
Through thick and thin
The idiom “through thick and thin” is used to describe a friend who is loyal and supportive during bad times as well as good times. It most often describes a friendship that has been strong for a long time. Here are two examples: John and Lisa have been friends through thick and thin. My best friend and I stayed together through thick and thin.
Like two peas (豌豆) in a pod
If two people are “like two peas in a pod”, it means that they get along very well. They are two very good friends and they are very similar to each other. I have never seen Lola and Camille argue; they are like two peas in a pod.
A shoulder to cry on
Some friends are especially sympathetic and easy to talk to. They are not judgmental or impatient. They are good at sharing our pain, which helps reduce our pain. A friend like this is often called “a shoulder to cry on”. We can go to this person with a problem or sadness and this person can bring comfort to us.
Hit it off
“Hit it off” with someone means falling in love with someone quickly or getting along with someone. This usually happens the first time two people are meeting. They often share interests, goals and beliefs. This can happen between friends who like each other at first sight. Carmen and Isabel hit it off at the party and are going to a movie together today. Mike and I did not hit it off on our first date, but we are going to try once more.

Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of traditional Chinese folk drama. It is probably one of the most ancient arts using light and shadow. It is also a mix of many art forms, including painting, music, opera and story-telling. Shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.
More than 2000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very sad about the death of his wife. One day, one of his men happened to see some children playing with toys. The shadows of the toys were lively on the floor. Then he had an idea—he made a puppet (偶) of the emperor’s wife. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a puppet show. This is believed to be the start of shadow puppetry.
In the Tang Dynasty, shadow puppetry was played by many people in many places around the country. Then in the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced into West Asian and European countries along the Silk Road. The art form became the most popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was played in almost every province and in many kinds of celebrations like weddings and birthday dinners.
It is not an easy job to make the puppets. Their body parts are cut separately and then joined together so that they an move freely. During the show, puppetry artists connect the puppets’ most important joints with sticks. In this way, they can hold the puppets and make the puppets walk, run or dance as they want. Sometimes the puppets could be as lively as living things on the screen.
In fact most puppetry artists across China don’t get trained and don’t play shadow puppetry as a job. They just play it for fun and love. However, they are still experts (专家) in this field. In recent years, puppetry artists have explored ways to make this ancient art form as popular as it used to be and pass it on to the young, hoping more people can understand its importance and feel its beauty. They also get support from the Chinese government. Thanks to their hard work, Chinese shadow puppetry is becoming great again.
34. Which of the following is true according to this passage?
A. One man created a puppet show to comfort the emperor who lost his wife.
B Puppetry artists hold and control the puppets with sticks that connect their joints.
C. Puppetry artists don’t play it for a living, this keeps them from becoming experts.
D. Shadow puppetry is great again simply because puppetry artists have done a lot.
35. What does the underlined word “joints” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 手臂 B. 肩膀 C. 关节 D. 脚踝
36. What is the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
37. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Development of puppetry B. Improvement of puppetry
C. History of puppetry D. Introduction of puppetry

About 23 million years ago, there lived an ocean giant with teeth the size of a human hand and a jaw wide enough to take in a whole person. Then, about 2.6 million years ago, the megalodon disappeared. Exactly why that happened is a scientific mystery, but a new study suggests that the huge animal may have lost out to the much smaller but still wild species—the great white shark.
The megalodon was the largest shark that ever lived. According to the studies of teeth and other fossils (化石) found in oceans around the world, scientists believe the megalodon was about three times the size of the largest great white shark. Because it lived so long ago, it is difficult to know what the megalodon’s life was like or exactly what it ate. However, an international team of researchers studied its fossilized teeth to try to find out.
In today’s ecosystems (生态系统), animals that are higher on the food chain have lower levels of a mineral called zinc (锌) in their bodies. The researchers studied teeth of ancient megalodons and great white sharks and found that members of both kinds of sharks had a similar amount of zinc in their teeth. That meant the two kinds of sharks were in the same position on the food chain. They were both at the top of the food chain with no natural killers and ate the same kinds of animals, such as fish and seals.
This finding supported an idea that great white sharks, though smaller, could have managed to catch most of the food the megalodons needed to live. If that was true, the smaller shark could play a role in driving the much bigger shark to death. Other factors could have included climate and water temperatures. The research also supported the idea that a killer didn’t have to be the largest to beat others of its kind.
Scientists will have to do more research to find out exactly what happened in those ancient ocean ecosystems and to the megalodon. However they may have drawn the conclusion. “Megalodons played an important role in shaping the ocean ecosystems we know today,” said Kenshu Shimada, a shark paleontologist. ▲
38. We can learn from Paragraph 2 about ________.
A. what the megalodon ate B. where the megalodon lived
C. how big the megalodon was D. when the megalodon died out
39. What is the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To show us the meaning of the food chain.
B. To explain what the mineral zinc really means.
C. To describe the shape of megalodons and great white sharks.
D. To tell us two kinds of sharks were at the top of the food chain.
40. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
(①=para.1 ②=para.2 ③=para.3 ④=para.4 ⑤=para.5)

For two long years, I lived the life of a slave. I wanted to run away, but it was never possible. My master liked to go fishing in a little boat, and he always took me with him. A man called Moely, and a young boy also went with us.
One day my master said to us, “Some of my friends want to go fishing tomorrow. Get the boat ready.” So we put much food and drink on the boat, and the next morning, we waited for my master and his friends. But when my master arrived, he was alone.
“My friends don’t want to go fishing today,” he said to me, “But you go with Moely and the boy, and catch some fish for our supper tonight.”
“Yes, master,” I answered quickly, but inside I was excited, my chance came!
We took the boat out to sea. For a time, we fished quietly, and then I moved carefully behind Moely and knocked him into the water. “Swim!” I cried. “Swim to the beach!”
My master liked to shoot seabirds and so there were guns on the boat. Quickly, I took one of these guns. Moely was swimming after the boat and I shouted at him, “Go back to the shore, or I’ll shoot you through the head!” So Moely turned and swam back to the shore as quickly as possible.
Then I said to the boy, “Xury, if you help me, I’ll be a good friend to you. If you don’t help me, I’ll push you into the sea, too.”
But Xury was happy to help me. “I’ll go all over the world with you,” he cried.
I wanted to sail to the Canary Islands, but I was afraid to go too far from the shore. And so we sailed on south for some days. We had very little water, and it was a dangerous country here, with many wild animals. Once I used a gun to shoot a wild animal. I didn’t know what animal it was, but it made a good meal.
Later we managed to get more food and water, and we sailed on. Eleven days later we came near the Cape Verde Islands. Suddenly Xury saw a ship, we called and shouted and sailed our little boat as fast as possible. But the ship didn’t see us. Then I remembered the gun which made lots of smoke. Luckily, the ship saw us and turned.
The Portuguese captain listened to my story. He was going to Brazil and agreed to help me. He bought my boat, and for Xury, too. At first, I didn’t want to sell Xury as a slave, after all our dangerous adventures together. But Xury was happy to go to the captain and the captain was a good man. “In ten years’ time”, he said, “Xury can go free.”
When we arrived in Brazil three weeks later, I said goodbye to the captain and Xury, left the ship, and went to begin a new life.

Sophie, a 14-year-old British girl, suddenly changed her behavior in class. She lost interest in studies and would sit in the corner with her head mostly down.
Ethan Miller, one of Sophie’s teachers, discovered that she was bullied (欺凌) online. Sophie was receiving abusive (辱骂) messages on her phone and on Facebook. Miller shared Sophie’s story on the official website of The Children’s Society, a children’s charity in the UK.
Sophie was not alone. One in three young people, in 30 countries, said they have experienced online bullying. Twenty percent of those bullied students were not willing to go to school because of it, according to a report in September. The study surveyed more than 170, 000 young people aged 13—24 from countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Seventy-five percent of them said that the most common online bullying cases happened on social media, like Facebook and Twitter. The growth of social media has left many young people hurt through unfriendly and abusive messages, comments and pictures online.
The Internet world makes it easier for people to communicate with each other, but there is more danger for young people as well —and it is surprising that online bullying troubles many young people more than anything else. What’s more, online bullying could lead to serious results for young people. Such bullying makes young people more than twice as likely to hurt themselves or even kill themselves, according to a 2018 study by the University of Oxford, UK. The research also found that young people facing online bullying were not as likely to ask for help as those bullied by traditional ways.
To deal with the problem, UNICEF has called for national helplines to support people who are bullied, along with training for teachers and parents to prevent and deal with online bullying.
Here is some advice to keep yourself away from danger on the Internet.
● Make sure that you’re careful and respectful to others, even if you don’t share similar opinions, values or beliefs.
● If you experience online bullying, the best response (回应) to a bully is no response at all.
● Keep a record of anything that shows proof (证据) of online bullying, like screenshots. You can use this to report and stop them.

B. Puppetry artists hold and control the puppets with sticks that connect their joints.
C. Puppetry artists don’t play it for a living, this keeps them from becoming experts.

However, they may have drawn the conclusion. “Megalodons played an important role in shaping the ocean ecosystems we know today,” said Kenshu Shimada, a shark paleontologist. ▲
38. We can learn from Paragraph 2 about ________.
A. what the megalodon ate B. where the megalodon lived

六、阅读与回答问题(10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
