I made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was reading a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed”, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
“What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “I don’t?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well...that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing.
“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”

Have you ever entered a tropical rainforest(热带雨林)? Rainforests make up only a small part of the Earth’s surface, about six percent, but there are more kinds of trees than any other area in the whole world.
Tropical rainforests are in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, Australia, and on the Pacific islands. The largest tropical rainforest is the Amazon (亚马逊)Rainforest in South America, which covers 1. 2 billion acres, or almost five million square kilometres. The second largest rainforest is in Western Africa.
Rainforests provide us with many things. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is the “lungs of our planet” because it produces 20%of the world’s oxygen (氧气). One fifth of the world’s fresh water is also found in the Amazon Rainforest. Furthermore, one half of the world’s species of animals, plants and insects live in the Earth’s rainforests. 80% of the food we eat first grew in the rainforest. 25%of the drugs we take when we are sick are made of plants that grow only in rainforests. Some of these drugs are even used to fight and cure cancer.
There are four different levels of trees in a rainforest. The forest floor is the lowest layer full of animal life and receives the least amount of light. The under storey is the dark, cool environment under the leaves but over the ground. The canopy layer is the upper parts of most of the trees. The emergent layer contains a small number of very tall trees.

六、任务型阅读(每小题1分,满分10分)
Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. It is the pride of us Chinese, but it also presents a danger to the world.
First, the making of paper requires the loss of many millions of trees each year. According to The World Counts, between 2001 and 2019, the world lost a total of 386 million hectares of forest. Of the trees that were cut down, 42 percent went to paper production. That represents a great part of the world’s forests. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot keep such a high rate of forest Loss.
The second great problem with paper is that when the paper is used, it is useless. A great deal of wastepaper ends up in rubbish and even landfills (废物填埋场),where it can produce harmful gases. Paper in landfills causes the release (释放) of methane, a gas that is an important factor (因素) in climate (气候) change all around the world.
One simple way to help out can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Instead of cutting down trees, recycle used paper to meet the need of paper-making. Effective recycling requires an effort from everyone all over the world. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be put into use.
The need is real. The loss of trees influences everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industry to do the same. The world will be a better place for it!

七、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Most students have had a love-hate experience relationship with procrastination(拖延症). We all come up with magic ways to bring ourselves moments of joy to relieve our stress and productivity. When deadlines come near, though these moments of lost time often become regrettable. Here are tips to help you reduce this age-old practice.
Set goals
Students often procrastinate because they think that they can put off the work for a while and enjoy their time at the moment. This thought is likely to worsen the situation, though, when the deadline becomes one day away and the task has yet to be started. In order to stay on track, you should set and update goals. It can be important to mark all deadlines in a planner and think about how much time you need to meet them all.
Reward yourself
In order to keep productivity and mind levels up set breaks at the end of a period of time or once you finish a section of your work. Then you can reward yourself with some deserved, planned, and controlled activities: have a coffee with a friend, cook, or watch an episode of television show. Breaks like these are proven to increase productivity and keep you focused, and they will make the process of studying much more bearable!
Turn off the Internet
If you do not need the Internet to do your work, turn it off so that you are not receiving notifications while completing your work. The same goes for your cell phone; you can take a break from being connected to the Internet world in order to do your school work. If you feel the need to check messages and websites often, set times when you will allow yourself to do so rather than constantly staying connected.
Have something to look forward to
Being productive for all hours of every day does not work—you do need breaks. So, in order to balance productivity and entertainment, plan time to go out with friends or do something relaxing to complement your school work. Ideally, social and relaxation plans should be made for after an important task is completed. This way, while you are working, you can keep in mind that once you have finished your work, you can go out and not worry about your work.

These different parts of a rainforest exist together to create an ecosystem for many animals, plants and human beings.

The need is real The loss of trees influences everybody on earth.

In order to keep productivity and mind levels up, set breaks at the end of a period of time or once you finish a section of your work.
