M: Well, it is not actually something I planned to do. It was a fun job. I took on while I was at university to earn a bit of extra money, and when I did it actually, it turned out that I was quite good at it.
W: What do you have to do as a living statue?
M: Firstly, you should come up with a creative idea and then you have to practice and find the right clothes and stuff and do the full body makeup.
W: You won the world living statue championships recently. Could you tell us something about that?
M: Um, for the world championships, I was a stone statue and I painted in those tiny marks so that I looked like a kind of old, almost falling apart statue. And I think the judges really appreciated that.
W: Yep, I get it. So what is the point of doing this job?
M: The point really is the connection you make with your audience. When you make a tiny movement, they tend to explode with laughter, and it’s that interaction between the audience and the performer. That’s really what it’s all about.
W: And what is the secret of being a good living statue?
M: Firstly, never try and perform on an empty stomach. If you get hungry, you can start to feel light headed, so you always need to eat something first. Well, good stomach muscles are key too. You need to have them to hold those positions.

Sublingual delivery means delivering medicine under the tongue. This area is not a very common place to deliver drugs, but it is very effective for the drugs to be absorbed quickly into the body.
A Swiss biotech company, BioLingus, has developed sublingual delivery of peptides (肽) and proteins. It has opened the door to non-invasive delivery of many biological drugs that had so far only been taken through injections.
The primary challenge in developing the technique was stabilising the proteins. BioLingus turned to nature to find a solution. The seeds of plants contain a high concentration of proteins, which have to survive and remain complete for years, sometimes in extreme conditions of temperature, moisture, or drought. By mimicking these mechanisms, BioLingus has been able to come up with a way to preserve and stabilise proteins for a very long time at room temperature through advanced bioengineering.
And because of this, sublingual drugs are more adaptable than injection solutions that must usually be refrigerated. In itself, this opens up the possibility for social innovation as well as biological innovation.
Due to the strong stability of BioLingus’ technology, sublingual drugs are very well suited for use in some less developed countries. Biological drugs usually have to be cooled all the way from manufacturing right up to when they reach the patient, and then injected. In many less developed countries, however, effective logistical cold chains are non-existent or not very good. With BioLingus’ sublingual technology, however, the cold chain can be minimised or not needed at all.
In addition, because the drugs can be given orally instead of by injection, complications (并发症) due to infected needles are also prevented. What’s more, although the technology is hi-tech, from a manufacturing perspective it is relatively low-cost. So, the combination of these factors makes it an excellent technology for use in some less developed countries — very much a social innovation.
28. Which of the following inspired BioLingus’ solution to stabilising the proteins?
A. Proteins contained in plants.
B. Plants that live in extreme conditions.
C. The ways proteins survive extreme conditions.
D. Seeds growing at a steady and high temperature.
29. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Proteins in injection solutions must be refrigerated.
B. BioLingus came up with a technology through biomimicry.
C. Sublingual drugs are both socially and biologically innovative.
D. Sublingual drugs keep proteins stable for a long time at room temperature.
30. Why is sublingual delivery suited to some less developed countries?
A Because these countries lack effective cold chains.
B. Because it is easier to be accepted in these countries.
C. Because it is less expensive and more high-tech than injection solutions.
D. Because there are more complications due to infected needles in these countries.
31. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Inspiration from Nature Transforms How Medicines Work
B. The Challenges Facing the Production of Sublingual Drugs
C. The Promotion of Sublingual Drugs in Developed Countries
D. Proteins in Different Natural Conditions Contribute to Innovation
C 29. D 30. A 31. A

根据第三段中“The seeds of plants contain a high concentration of proteins, which have to survive and remain complete for years, sometimes in extreme conditions of temperature, moisture, or drought. By mimicking these mechanisms, BioLingus has been able to come up with a way to preserve and stabilise proteins for a very long time at room temperature through advanced bioengineering.(植物的种子含有高浓度的蛋白质,这些蛋白质必须存活并保持完整多年,有时在极端的温度、湿度或干旱条件下。通过模仿这些机制,BioLingus已经能够通过先进的生物工程,在室温下长时间保存和稳定蛋白质)”可知,植物种子中的蛋白质能够在极端条件下长期存活,BioLingus模仿了这些机制,开发出稳定蛋白质的方法,故选C。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。第三段最后一句“By mimicking these mechanisms, BioLingus has been able to come up with a way to preserve and stabilise proteins for a very long time at room temperature through advanced bioengineering.(通过模仿这些机制,BioLingus已经能够通过先进的生物工程,在室温下长时间保存和稳定蛋白质)”提到,BioLingus通过生物工程能够在室温下长期保存蛋白质,结合划线词所在句“And because of this, sublingual drugs are more adaptable than injection solutions that must usually be refrigerated.(正因为如此,舌下药物比通常必须冷藏的注射溶液适应性更强)”可知,this指代前文提到的“舌下药物能使蛋白质在室温下长时间保持稳定”,故选D。
根据倒数第二段中“In many less developed countries, however, effective logistical cold chains are non-existent or not very good. With BioLingus’ sublingual technology, however, the cold chain can be minimised or not needed at all.(然而,在许多欠发达国家,不存在有效的物流冷链,或者不是很好。然而,有了BioLingus的舌下技术,冷链可以最小化,甚至根本不需要)”可知,由于一些欠发达国家缺乏有效的冷链,而舌下药物不需要冷藏,所以适合这些国家,故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第三段中“The primary challenge in developing the technique was stabilising the proteins. BioLingus turned to nature to find a solution.(开发这项技术的主要挑战是稳定蛋白质。BioLingus转向大自然寻求解决方案)”可知,文章主要讲述BioLingus如何从自然中获得灵感,开发舌下给药技术,解决了冷链保存问题,成为一些欠发达国家使用的优秀技术,A项“来自大自然的灵感改变了药物的工作方式”最适合作为标题,故选A。

A plant-based material from pine (松树) could serve as a replacement for petrol-based chemicals in foam (泡沫) products, potentially leading to more environmentally friendly versions of materials used in products like kitchen cleaning cloth and packaging.
A research team led by Washington State University used an eco-friendly method to prepare lignin (a natural material found in plants, especially wood) as a replacement for 20% of the petrol-based chemicals in the foam. The new bio-based foam was found to be as strong and flexible as regular foam.
Petrol-based plastics are a growing environmental problem. They take centuries to break down and are costly and hard to recycle, often resulting in lower-quality second-hand products. Because it costs more to recycle than to make new plastic, the recycling rate of plastic has remained below 20%. The best solution is to replace these materials with natural alternatives.
Lignin, the second most common renewable carbon source, makes up about 30% of the non-fossil carbon on Earth. However, it is challenging to extract (提炼) from plants. It is usually obtained during paper-making and bio-processing, but these processes often damage its chemical and physical properties, lowering its value. As a result, most lignin is either burned for energy or used in lower-value products like building materials or as a substance to hold together animal feed.
In their study, the researchers used a mild, environmentally friendly solution to separate high-quality lignin from pine. Their method produced a consistent mixture with good heat resistance, similar to that of native lignin, which is crucial for producing high-value products. When tested, the bio-based foam was stable and performed as well mechanically as conventional foam.
“This work shows that our lignin material has great potential for producing flexible, natural foam,” said Xiao Zhang, professor at the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering. Zhang’s team will now work with industrial partners to improve and expand the production of lignin-based foam.
32. What is the main purpose of the research described in the text?
A. To find a more cost-effective material for foam production.
B. To enhance the performance of foam in extreme conditions.
C. To explore plant-based alternatives to traditional foam ingredients.
D. To develop a new type of foam for specific industrial applications.
33. Which is the ultimate solution to the environmental problem of plastic waste?
A. Replacing plastics with natural alternatives. B. Reducing the use of plastics in daily life.
C. Developing biodegradable plastics. D. Improving recycling technology.
34. Why is lignin not widely used as a replacement for petrol-based plastics?
A. It is too expensive to extract from plants.
B. It is not a renewable resource like plastic.
C. The processes to extract it often degrade its qualities.
D. There is insufficient demand for natural alternatives to plastic.
35. What was the main result of the researchers’ study?
A. The method resulted in low-quality lignin.
B. The bio-based foam was less stable than regular foam.
C. The bio-based plastic can replace all conventional one.
D. Their method produced lignin with good heat resistance.
C 33. A 34. C 35. D

根据上文“Mental resilience (韧性) has become a vital skill in today’s fast-paced world. (心理韧性在当今快节奏的世界中已成为一项至关重要的技能)”以及下文“Research indicates that individuals with high resilience levels are 35 % more likely to maintain mental health during long-term stress. (研究表明,具有高韧性水平的人在长期压力下保持心理健康的可能性要高出 35%)”可知上文提到了“心理韧性”,下文说的是“心理韧性”的重要性,可推理出空白处需要对“心理韧性”这一概念进行解释说明,与G项“It refers to the ability to recover from difficulties while keeping basic operations running. (它指的是在保持基本功能正常运行的同时从困难中恢复的能力)”表达的含义一致,故选G项。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Resilience is not about reducing stress but managing it effectively. Emerging neurobiological evidence sheds light on this positively adaptive process. (韧性不是减少压力,而是有效地管理压力。新出现的神经生物学证据揭示了这一积极的适应过程)”以及下文“Neuroscientists (神经学家) compare it to muscle training: facing proper challenged regularly improved mental ability to adjust. (神经学家将其比作肌肉训练:定期面对适当的挑战可以提高心理调节能力)”可知,这里阐述的是这种适应过程对大脑能力的积极影响,与F项“This psychological training strengthens the brain’s ability to handle future challengers. (这种心理训练增强了大脑处理未来挑战的能力)”表达的意思一致,故选F项。
【38题详解】
根据上文“During aerobic workouts, the body producers BDNF (脑源性神经营养因子), a protein important for brain development. (在有氧运动中,身体会产生脑源性神经营养因子,这是一种对大脑发育很重要的蛋白质)”以及下文“Meanwhile, this chemical process not only improved mood but also strengthens mental abilities. (同时,这个化学过程不仅改善了情绪,还增强了心理能力)”可知此处提到了产生脑源性神经营养因子这一自然过程,可推理出空白处应是在说产生脑源性神经营养因子这一自然过程对人的积极的作用,与D项“This natural process helps maintain stable emotions and enhanced clear thinking. (这个自然过程有助于保持稳定的情绪并增强清晰的思维)”表达的含义一致,故选D项。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Human beings succeed through meaningful connections. Strong social networks act as psychological safety nets during c rises. (人类通过有意义的联系取得成功。强大的社交网络在危机期间充当心理安全网。)”以及下文“A Stanford University study over many years found that people with strong social support recovered 50 % faster from emotional difficulties than those who were isolated. (斯坦福大学多年的一项研究发现,有强大社会支持的人比那些孤立无援的人从情感困难中恢复的速度要快50%)”可知有强大社会支持的人比那些孤立无援的人从情感困难中恢复的速度要快50%,可推理出此处应是在强调建立强大联系的重要性,与A项“Therefore, building strong connections should be a key goal. (因此,建立强大的联系应该是一个关键目标)”表达的意思一致,故选A项。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Psychologists suggest changing extreme negative ideas like “I can’t handle this” into positive views such as “This is hard but possible.” 2022 study found that daily gratitude practice lowers stress hormones by 25 % in three weeks (心理学家建议将“我无法处理这个问题”等极端消极想法转变为“这很难但有可能”等积极观点。

One late evening, a thin boy named Roger walked near Mrs. Jones. The large woman carried her bag and walked home from work. Roger saw her black purse hanging from her arm. He walked up quietly and dragged the strap (包带) fiercely.
“Help!” Mrs. Jones turned quickly. The strap broke. Roger fell backward onto the ground. The purse hit the sidewalk. Before he could grab it, Mrs. Jones stepped on his foot hard.
“Ah! Stop that!” Roger screamed, holding his foot. His eyes filled with tears. Mrs. Jones held his arm tightly. “Come to my house,” she said firmly. Roger stood up slowly and followed her.
They entered a small yellow house. The kitchen had a stove and a table. Mrs. Jones opened the fridge and took out bread. “Sit here,” she said, pointing to a chair. Roger sat down carefully. His hands shook as he touched his dirty shoes.
Mrs. Jones put a hot plate on the table. Beans and ham smelled good. Roger’s stomach made loud noises. He ate quickly with his hands. Mrs. Jones watched him and told stories. “I worked in a hair salon,” she said. “Women came in with strange hair colors.” Roger smiled a little.
After eating, Mrs. Jones asked, “Do you have family nearby?” Roger looked at the floor. “My parents work all the time,” he said. “I need new shoes.” Mrs. Jones opened her purse and took out ten dollars. “For shoes,” she said. Roger stood up. The money felt heavy in his hand. Outside, he saw Mrs. Jones talking to an old lady. The old lady held three big bags. Roger walked over and took one bag. It was heavier than he expected.
The old lady thanked him. Roger walked home slowly. His feet still hurt, but he felt better. The money meant he could buy shoes. He thought about Mrs. Jones, she was scary at first, but kind later. The night didn’t feel so dark anymore.

Afterwards, Roger decided to help more people around him.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Months later, during a snowstorm, Roger saw Mrs. Jones who looked cold in the wind. Without thinking, he ran to her side and offered his coat. Her eyes softened. “Thank you, Roger,” she said, her voice warm. As they walked, just then, she almost slipped on ice. Roger caught her arm, just like Mrs. Jones had once caught him. he noticed she still carried the same old bag. “You’re a kind person now, I believe you can warm more people around you.” she said. Roger looked into Mrs Jone’s eyes, smiled, and nodded.
Afterwards, Roger decided to help more people around him. Turning his community into a better place was high on his agenda. He organized weekend food drives for local shelters, using his grandma’s van to deliver supplies. When a homeless man needed shoes, Roger collected new pairs from neighbors. Teachers praised his compassion constantly, but Roger’s proudest moment came when a shy grocery worker told him, “Your kindness changed how I see my own power.” Roger realized true heroes don’t need capes — they just choose to care beyond their own walls.

How can we successfully break into new markets? I’ve been thinking about these questions for two years, and eventually I came to believe the best way is to further my studies in this field.”
For students considering further study, Azimidizaj says Suzhou provides a comfortable environment, with its mix of modern facilities and ancient culture. Qian advises others thinking about going back to school to make careful decisions and then pursue goals wholeheartedly. “Sometimes, choice is more important than effort. Making good decisions matters because mistakes are expensive,” says Qian. “But once you’ve decided, you should go after it with everything you’ve got. Life is too short to wait.”
24. What do Azimidizaj and Qian plan to do at XJTLU?
A. Teach professional skills. B. Conduct engineering research.
C. Enhance their career capabilities. D. Expand their social connections.

A. Because these countries lack effective cold chains.
D
D To develop a new type of foam for specific industrial applications.
33. Which is the ultimate solution to the environmental problem of plastic waste?
A. Replacing plastics with natural alternatives. B. Reducing the use of plastics in daily life.
C Developing biodegradable plastics.
