Ma Junhe, a 14-year-old student from a middle school in Henan, recently made a telescope. Costing only 70 yuan to make, the telescope allows him to see the craters(环形山)on the moon.
His interest in physics encouraged him to make this telescope. After learning about Newtonian Reflector Telescopes(牛顿式反射望远镜) in his physics class, he decided to make one himself.
As he didn’t have a lot of money, he came up with some clever ideas to find what he needed to make the telescope. He bought lenses online, and collected other materials on his own. “ I used an old plastic pipe(管)for the lens cone, and it was held by my drum stand,” Ma said.
Ma faced many difficulties along the way. First, he used cardboard to make a lens cone, as taught in class, but it didn’t work well. With his teacher’s advice, he used a plastic pipe. When he set up the eyepiece(目镜), he found it was much smaller than the pipe’s opening. He had to try many times to make sure it fit.
After failing 10 times, Ma finally succeeded. His telescope has a magnification(放大率)of 90 times, allowing him to clearly see the moon’s craters.

Many people around the world are working to protect animals in danger. Here are three of their stories. Read on to learn how they are helping!
golden-handed tamarins in Brazil
Fernanda Abra
These monkeys live in forests. Over the years, many roads have divided their home into smaller parts. The animals must risk their lives crossing the roads to find each other. To help them, we have built bridges in the canopy (树冠层). This allows the animals to move around safely.
African manatees in Cameroon
Aristide Kamla
Lake Ossa is home to some manatees. In the past, the lake was covered with a type of weed (水草). The weed grew fast and was hard to kill. As a result, the manatees could hardly surface for air. With the local’s help, we first cleared some of the weed by hand. Then, we introduced weevils (象鼻虫) to eat the weed. Today, less than 10% of the lake is covered with the weed.
Gee’s golden langurs in Bhutan
Kuenzang Dorji
Home loss and climate change are making it hard for langurs to find food. This has forced them to eat farmers’ crops (庄稼). Many langurs have been hurt by cars or power lines, or killed by angry farmers. To solve the problems, we have placed model tigers near crops, roads and power stations. These “tigers” roar (吼叫) to frighten the monkeys away. We also plan to help farmers grow crops which are less delicious to the monkeys.

Foo dogs are actually Chinese Guardian Lions. They have always played a special role as protectors in traditional Chinese culture.
Westerners named them Foo dogs or Buddha dogs. Some call them Fu dogs. The Chinese will most often refer to them as shi, which means “lion”. They are usually made of stone, steel or even gold. These amazing creatures, commonly called “Shi Shi” in Chinese, have been guarding important buildings for centuries.
The Guardian lions date back to the Han Dynasty. It is said that lions were not native to China but were brought as gifts from Central Asia. Chinese artists had never seen real lions, so they created imaginative stone statues mixing features of lions and local animals together.
Foo dogs should always be displayed in pairs, one male and one female. This is to keep balance: the Yin and Yang. The male Foo dog can be seen as the one resting his paw (爪) on the ball which may represent (代表) the world. The male is Yang. He protects everything outside. He is power. The female Foo dog is shown with one paw on a cub. She protects everything inside the home and house. She is the Yin. She represents support. Their mouths are carved differently, one opens to show strength, while the other stays closed to keep good luck inside.
Though there are modern security systems now, Foo dogs can still be seen at important places like museums, banks and hotels. They remain beloved cultural symbols reminding people of China’s long history.

China’s newest carrier rocket, the Long March 12, made its first flight on Nov. 30th, 2024 in Hainan. It is special in many ways. The Long March 12 is the first Chinese rocket with a diameter of 3.8 meters. Most Chinese rockets are 3.35 meters wide, a limit set in the 1960s for transporting things by rail. A wider body allows the rocket to hold 30% more propellant (推进剂) and carry heavier things.
The launch also used a new technology called tethered release technology (牵制释放技术). Before, rockets would launch as soon as they had enough thrust (推力). Now, with the new technology, rockets don’t just take off straight away. They stay still for a short time. During this time, workers quickly check for problems. If everything looks good, the rocket is then launched. This makes sure that both the rocket and things on the ground are safe.
More importantly, the Long March 12 is the first rocket launched at the Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Center. The site has two launch towers. The No. 2 tower can launch over 10 kinds of rockets, different from government-run sites’ towers that can only launch one kind. This is possible because the tower uses an interface (接口) for different rocket sizes.
The Long March 12 will help China build broadband satellite networks to provide internet to areas away from big cities across the country.
61. When did the Long March 12 finish its first flight?
A. Mar. 12th. B. Mar. 30th. C. Nov. 12th. D. Nov. 30th.
62. How is the Long March 12 different from most other Chinese rockets?
A. Wider. B. Longer. C. Heavier. D. Lighter.
63. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?
A. The Long March 12 doesn’t take off straight away.
B. The workers can’t quickly check for problems now.
C. The workers don’t like the new tethered release technology.
D. The Long March 12 launched as soon as it had enough thrust.
64. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How to choose the launch site. B. China’s commercial launch site.
C. Different launch towers at the launch site. D. The new technology used at the launch site.
65. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Aerospace Launch Center: New Tech, Hainan

“Seeing the moon’s craters through my telescope made me feel so excited and good about myself,” said Ma. “With enough drive and hard work, even with little money, anyone can do something so amazing.”
46. How much did Ma Junhe spend making his telescope in the passage?
A. ¥ 70. B. ¥ 170. C. ¥ 700. D. ¥ 1700.
47. What encouraged Ma to make the telescope?
A. His interest in the moon. B. His interest in physics.
C. His love of making things. D. His love of making money.
48. What problem did Ma face when setting up the eyepiece?
A. It was too heavy. B. It broke during testing.
C. It didn’t fit the pipe’s size. D. It was not clear enough.
49. What material did Ma use to make the lens cone?
A. A plastic pipe. B. Lenses. C. His drum stand. D. Cardboard.
50. What can we learn from Ma’s story?
A. We need a lot of money to make things.
B. Teachers are important for making things.
C. Telescopes must be made with expensive materials.
D. Keep trying and we can do great things with little money.

A. Aerospace Launch Center: New Tech, Hainan
