Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.
Born in 1881 to a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.
By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There, he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.
After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing, Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918, he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published using the everyday language that people spoke, which helped make it a great success. This, together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q (1921), made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.
Although successful, Lu Xun still worried greatly about China’s future. In 1926, he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He now only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this, the government stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names.
Since his death in 1936, Lu Xun’s importance and influence have grown. Today, many of his writings are included in school textbooks and his works are read by millions around the world.

Arches National Park, located near the town of Moab in eastern Utah, is well known in the world. Experts say this park has the greatest number of arches of any similar geographic area in the world. Arches are formations that look like half a circle above an opening or hole in a rock. Arches can also appear as curved bridges between two large rocks.
Scientists say the area began forming almost two thousand million years ago. As time passed, the area filled with material left by rivers. Other rocks buried the area. Then great pressure deep in the Earth created huge mountains.
A soft rock called sandstone began moving under this pressure. The sandstone moved upwards when it met other, harder rocks. These sandstone structures continued to grow for about one hundred fifty million years.
Arches developed from thin rock walls. They resulted when pieces of sandstone fell away from the formations. Scientists say water is the most important element in creating arches. Water destroys the chemicals that keep rock particles together. The rock breaks as the water freezes and expands. Then the wind blows away the loose rock particles.
Scientists say that most arches seen today developed within the past million years. But they say the land formation continues to change slowly over time. New arches form. Older ones fall away.
The rock formations in Arches National Park are mostly a deep red color. Rocks get their color from minerals. The red color is the result of iron oxide or rust (铁锈).Scientists say the presence of iron in the rock shows that the weather was hot and dry when the rock was first formed.
36. We learn from the passage that Arches National Park____________.

You may see some herons (鹭) in the park using bread or insects as a tool to catch fish. This is just one of the ways in which birds have changed their living habits because of humans. Now, a new study has found that birds that are able to change their behaviors in this way are less likely to die out. These changes may include adding new food to their diet, developing new hunting skills, or living in a new environment. These new behaviors have long been considered advantages in avoiding extinction(灭绝).
To test this on a world level, scientists studied reports of new behaviors among bird species. The study includes more than 3,800 new behaviors among8,600 species of birds. They concluded that the more new hunting skills the birds master, the larger population they will have. In other words, extinction risk reduces as the number of new skills increases.
However, it is stressed that innovation (革新) can only protect birds from changes in their living place, but not from over-hunting or harm from other species. It should be noticed that some animals are very dangerous to some birds: snakes can attack little birds, some hungry mice stole birds' eggs. Above all, humans often mean the greatest danger to birds. They always take up too much space, cut down millions of trees and even cause various kinds of pollution.
This shows that, unlike what is usually believed, the ability to innovate protects animals from some but not all of the rapid changes in the environment.
41. Why do birds change their living habits?
A. Because they like their new habits. B. Because they want to use tools.
C. Because humans ask them to do that D. Because human activities affect them.
42. According to the passage, birds that ____________ may not die out soon.
A. feed on fewer kinds of food B. have a little food every day
C. get enough food in some new ways D. dislike to live in a noisy place
43. Which of the following shows the result of the study in Paragraph 2?
A. B.
C. D.
44. Which paragraph shows the harm from other species to birds?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
45. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Humans often help birds to change themselves.
B. Innovation in hunting skills has an effect on birds' living.
C. The ability of innovation can protect birds from all danger.
D. Birds can change their hunting skills in the new environment.

____61____ /'tʃaildhud/ is a time of fun and games. Many people still remember when they were young, they often played games like hide-and-seek and chess. Playing teaches children how to get with others, and it also helps to exercise the mind and body. However, children today spend most of their time in ____62____ of the computer playing video games.
A recent survey ____63____ (find) that in the USA, children between 8 and 12 spent at least 13 hours a week playing video games or “gaming”. Boys of this age spend even more time, almost 16 hours a week. Although some people will say that gaming is ____64____ (help), it brings many problems, too.
One big problem is that kids who spend most of their time on games might have difficulty communicating with real people. They might have trouble sharing and solving problems because they do not practice these skills when sitting ____65____ /a'ləun/ at a computer.
____66____ problem is about health. Game players usually sit for hours without doing any exercise. And they might not eat ____67____ (health). As a result, they might be out of shape.
Next, game players might have problems with their subjects. Many of them spend more time playing games than ____68____ (work) on their homework. In the end, they fail the exams.
Finally, it is always ____69____ /'pɒsəbl/ that the gamers become addicted. Some people play four or five hours a day or even all day. This happened to a 28-year-old Korean man. He spent about 50 hours playing ____70____ online game. He died while gaming!

1. —Do you think that English is ________ useful language?
—Yes. It’s very useful.
A. a B. an C. the
【答案】A
根据“Do you think that English is…useful language?” 故选A。
2. —Jane ____________up early in the morning.
—I agree with you. She is always the first to get to school.
A. used to get B. is used to getting C. is used to get
used to do sth过去常常做某事,现在不再做了;be used to doing sth.习惯做某事;be used to do sth. 根据答语“She is always the first to get to school”可知,简早起已经是习惯性的事情。故选B。
3. In our class _______ of the students ______ girls.
A. three fifths; are B. three fifth; are C. three fifth; is
【答案】A
故选A。
4. The International Nurse Day is ____________ May 12th.
A. in B. on C. at
5. Olympic Games _________ in China. I hope that I can go and watch the games.
A. hold B. is held C. will be held
主语Olympic Games与动词hold之间存在着被动关系,因此用被动语态,排除A;根据“I hope that I can go and watch the games.”
6. —CCTV-10 often plays _________ around the world.
—Yes. It can help us learn more about not only nature but also different cultures and customs.
A new something B. something new C. anything new
7. — What’s the time?
— It’s ________.
A. a quarter past nine B. fifteen to nine C. fifteen past eight
【答案】A
a quarter past nine是9:15;fifteen to nine是8:45;fifteen past eight是8:15。 故选A。
