Have you ever bought something and then changed your mind? For Alison Jensen, 15, this used to happen several times a week. Alison was a shopaholic (购物狂). She just couldn’t stop shopping and she loved special offers.
Alison’s bedroom is full of stuff. “I’ve been to every shop in Birmingham, I think,” says Alison. She picks up some earrings. The labels are still on them. “These were half price,” she says. “I’ve never worn them.” Alison’s problem wasn’t just jewellery. She also bought a lot of clothes, though not many shoes, because they were usually too expensive. She has also bought lots of other small things—like 20 new covers for her phone. She hasn’t used any of them.
According to experts, we all feel excited after we buy something new. For shopaholics, it’s a little different. Soon after they buy something, they think they’ve made a mistake and start to feel unhappy. So they buy themselves something else to feel happier.
Psychologists (心理学家) first described the problems of shopaholics in 1915. However, there was very little research on the subject until recently. Now, doctors think thousands of people suffer from the problem, and the situation is getting worse. There are also more teenage shopaholics now, although most young people don’t have enough money to go shopping very regularly.
Alison knew she had a problem. “I often bought something every day. Usually it was something small, but I just needed to buy it,” she says. “I spent money that I got for my birthday, and when I was short of cash, I borrowed money from friends or my parents. When I couldn’t go shopping, I felt anxious. Then one day, my parents just looked at all the stuff in my room and said, ‘This is crazy!’ I knew they were right. I needed some big changes in my life.”
Alison now gets help with her problem and feels she has changed. She no longer thinks she’s a shopaholic. “When I want to buy something in a shop, I ask myself two questions,” she says, “Do I need it? Can I afford it? The answer to both questions is usually ‘no’, so I walk away. It’s great!”
31. What do experts say about shopaholics?
A. Shopaholics feel sad when they are shopping.
B. Shopaholics soon feel unhappy after they have bought something.
C. Shopaholics feel more excited than other people when they shop.
D. Shopping is the only way shopaholics can feel happy.
32 The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. psychologists B. doctors
C. Alison’s parents D. Alison’s friends

Many kids say they don’t like the taste of brassicas (芥属植物) — a group of vegetables that includes broccoli and cabbage. Now scientists think that there could be a good reason for those so-called “picky” eating habits of kids that drive mothers crazy.
When chemicals in brassicas mix with some people’s saliva (唾液), they give out bad-smelling smells in the mouth. The study found that the more bad-smelling smells a child’s mouth produces, the more they dislike the food.
But why do some people’s mouths make more of these smells than other people’s mouths? To find out, the team collected saliva samples from 98 pairs of parents and children. Every person’s saliva has a microbiome (菌群) in it. The researchers believe this determines how much of the gases are given out when a person eats the vegetables. Maybe our picky eaters are simply those who have the microbiome that increases smell of chemicals.
The team mixed samples of the adults’ and children’s saliva with powdered (研成粉的) broccoli. They found that people who were related to each other produced almost the same amounts of the smelly chemicals. Though parents and their children tended to produce similar levels, the parents didn’t mind the taste of brassicas as much as their kids did. The adults may have gotten used to it over time.
Experts suggest many food dislikes can be overcome with repeated exposure. This means a picky eater may come to enjoy food they avoid if they try it enough times. Say your child hates cabbage — if you offer them cabbage enough times, in different forms, they may come to enjoy it in the end. What’s more, children learn by observation. If they see you eating a balanced mix of healthy foods, they’ll be more likely to follow. However, watching you eating lots of soda, snack foods, and dessert will make them wonder why they can’t do the same.
36. What leads to kids’ dislike for broccoli according to the text?
A. The unhealthy eating habits. B. Mother’s bad cooking.
C. Unpleasant smells in mouths. D. Broccoli’s bad smell.
37. What can we learn about “microbiomes” according to Paragraph 3?
A. They are everywhere. B. They mostly smell bad.
C. Saliva produces them. D. They cause smells.
38. What did the team find in Paragraph 4?
A. Kids will accept brassicas sooner or later.
B. Powdered food is healthier for children.
C. Parents have similar smells in mouths as kids.
D. Adults don’t feel the bad tastes of brassicas.
39. How can a mother help kids enjoy brassicas according to the experts?
A. By keeping a good diet herself. B. By hiding all unhealthy food.
C. By pushing kids to eat more. D. By feeding kids with cabbage.
40. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A story book. B. A science magazine. C. A documentary. D. An advertisement.
(D)
People today are familiar with words, such as “going eco-friendly” and “sustainable (可持续) lifestyle”. Many people join “The Green Movement” and take nature-friendly lifestyles. However, there’s still a group of people who believe that going eco-friendly is only a short-term fashion and it isn’t going to last long.
Many environmental organizations can prove that going eco-friendly is not only a fashion that lasts for a few months but a trend. These organizations pay close attention to different green causes and hold activities to increase people’s awareness on environmental problems.
The use of sustainable products like bamboo straws and electric cars is another evidence to show going eco-friendly isn’t a show. The customers are willing to buy such products, and more and more companies invest money in the production. Starbucks gives their customers discounts if they bring their own bottles for drinks. The efforts that are made by companies and customers show a change in the attitudes of people towards taking a sustainable lifestyle.
Meanwhile, some other people hold the view that people who take eco-friendly methods just want to improve their own image. They won’t keep the lifestyle for a long time. For example, some people post videos on the Internet and pretend they live in a zero-waste life. However, going eco-friendly isn’t a kind of fashion or a way to get others’ attention. For those who follow their zero-waste lifestyles over years, it’s about a promise that can only come with a true change in attitudes towards caring for the earth.
What’s worse, some customers go eco-friendly only because they think popular. Today buying recycled clothes is highly encouraged. It’s common to walk past the shops that claim to sell clothing made from recycled materials. However, many companies use only a small number of recycled materials, as low as 1%, to make their “eco-friendly” clothes. A lot of customers are cheated by the advertisements of such big companies. All of these suggest that going eco-friendly is all about looking the part, and nothing more.
The call to save the earth seems to remain for a while. It’s hoped that all the efforts for environmental protection will go a long way so that our future generations can have a better living environment.
41. What can people do to have a sustainable lifestyle?
A. Change the attitude towards the fast food.
B. Collect evidence about going eco-friendly.
C. Take their own bottles when they buy drinks.
D. Record daily lives and post videos on the Internet.
42. What does the underlined word invest mean in Paragraph3?
A. 筹集 B. 投资 C. 赋予 D. 获取
43. What does the writer mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5?
A. Customers need to learn more ways of going eco-friendly.
B. People have to change the attitudes towards recycled clothes.
C. Some people don’t take going eco-friendly as a long-term lifestyle.
D More activities should be held by big companies to save the world.
44. Which of the following can best express the message of the passage?
A. Saving the earth needs every effort all the time.
B. Protecting the nature is protecting ourselves.
C. Be careful of the information from the media.
D. Solve different problems in different ways.
45. What might be the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
