Even in more rural or open areas like Scotland, the newer houses are so small but expensively. Compared to England, Scotland has so much space for much bigger homes like those in the U.S. or Australia, but people there choose to build small homes that look really out of place in the countryside. What’s more, the prices are so high. Why?
We are a small country; lend suitable for building is expensive. The price of land is an important part in house prices. Also, in Britain, most houses are built of brick, so labour costs (人力成本) are high. When I visited the U.S., I noted that many of the new houses were built of timber and didn’t have slates (石板) or tiled roofs (用瓦平铺的屋顶). This is why when tornadoes (龙卷风) hit, houses there are blown away.
Because of the housing market and prices, I am back for good in France, after 10 years of working in the U.K. For £130,000, you can at least get a three-to four-bedroom cottage and lots of land in France.
You might Google “British country houses images” for some nice pictures of bigger houses. There is a huge variety of styles and sizes of houses in the U.K. well worth a look.
In the past, nobody could afford bigger houses. And it’s cheaper when you have less space to heat. Remember that it’s not a warm country.
If you have been to the U.K. , you will see how crowded it is around cities and towns. There is no room for large houses. What’s more, energy is very expensive in the U.K. and it is cold in winter, so a large house costs a lot of money to heat.
1.According to Berry, what causes Britain to have small but expensive houses?
①Limited land. ②High labour costs.
③A large population. ④High prices of land suitable for building.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
2.According to the article, why is Sue back in France?
A.She got tired of living in the U.K. B.She has found a better job in France.
C.She already has a big house in France. D.She thinks the house prices in the U.K. are too high.
3.Who lists lower energy costs as a benefit of a smaller house?
A.Sue and Kim. B.Kim and Chris. C.Berry and Chris. D.Berry and Tiffany.
In Shenzhen, many rooftops (外屋顶) become sky farms. On the sky farms, people grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables. These farms help people get close to nature in the city. At the Shenzhen Lily Flower Town, there’s a special sky farm. It doesn’t use earth (土壤). Workers grow plants in special water solutions (溶液). The farm opened in 2024 and works with local communities and schools to help people learn about plants.
If you stay at a hotel (酒房) and you can pick fresh herbs (草料) on a sky farm on its roof, how fantastic it will be! Visitors can just do that at the Yun Resort Shenzhen Longcheer. And the herbs can be used to cook special dishes then.
Even schools are joining the fun. One school has built a rooftop garden for learning. Students can take part in farming activities as part of their labour practice (劳动实践) classes. Xia Yufan, a student, says she can learn things that teachers don’t teach in a classroom. “I can watch how the seeds sprout (种子发芽) and grow little by little. It feels great,” she says.
But it’s not just farms up there. Some rooftops turn into coffee shops, outdoor movie theatres, and even places to camp! These special rooftops are like sky gardens for city people to enjoy nature and learn new things, high above the busy streets below.

【答案】1.B 2.D 3.B

Born in 1995 into a family of Tonghua porcelain (瓷器) craftsmen, Ye Hao naturally fell in love with this art. He has kept practicing his skills for 10 years, bringing new life to it.
Seeing the number of people with Tonghua skills drop greatly in Chaozhou, Ye felt responsible (有责任) for learning and protecting the art. Ye began learning it in high school, believing that every Tonghua porcelain piece has a life of its own.
During a winter holiday, when Ye was practicing carving flowers with his grandpa, his grandpa tried to teach him and laughed at the cracks (裂缝) in the flowers he made. “My grandpa told me that I had no feeling for the craft, but I didn’t take it to heart at that time, but now I get to know he was hoping that I could practice more,” Ye said.
He came to understand that moisture (水分) in the clay is important, as dry clay can easily break. After learning all the skills, Ye said his biggest job lies in designing. Since Tonghua porcelain features (以……为特色) over 10,000 holes of different shapes, designing them needs careful thoughts of their sizes and structures (结构). If a hole is car ved too large, it can easily break during firing.
Ye began to combine (结合) Tonghua porcelain with everyday things and his hobbies. For example, he designed a porcelain brooch (胸针) in the shape of a hand-painted rose. This brooch became a special souvenir chosen by the Guangdong government.
As an animation (动画) lover, Ye also designed a vase with small porcelain figures from the animation The Outcast (《弃儿》). These vases mix traditional art with popular culture.
Ye said he would keep looking for ways to bring the art into everyday life and show it to more people using fresh designs.

To-wit-to-woo, to-wit-to-woo! What’s that sound coming from the forest at night? It’s an owl (猫头鹰), of course! The owl is different from all other birds in so many ways.
All day long, the owl is sitting on a tree sleeping or trying to snooze, because it’s sometimes hard to close the eyes with all the sounds coming from little birds and animals in the forest! The owl gets food only at night. When evening comes, the animals all get to a safe place. The owl opens its big and round eyes. Any little animal around had better be careful!
The owl usually eats small animals like mice, but it also gets birds if it can get! The owl uses its great hearing to find its food, and then it turns its head from side to side, using its eyes to follow the animal. Finally, it flies down to get the animal. Owls have special and soft feathers (羽毛), so they can fly without making any sound. Owls are such good hunters (猎手) that they can even catch a fly in the air!
The owl is quiet most of the time. But when you get too close to its home, it will make sound to keep you away. The owl is a great mother. A mother owl will even hurt people if it thinks its babies are in danger!
