In a summer, Justin Horner was driving down a busy freeway in Portland, Ore., when his tire (轮胎) blew out. He pulled over to the side of the road and made a sign that said he needed help.
Three hours later, a car finally pulled up. Out came a family of four. They were Latino, and their young daughter acted as translator between her parents’ Spanish and Horner’s English, so that they could work together to fix Horner’s car.
They took about an hour, starting with the father finding a log (原木) on the side of the road, and using it to lift the car. When they finished, the mum pulled out a big bottle of water, and they drank and washed their hands.
“I just thanked them and thanked them and thanked them,” Horner recalled. “And I tried to give her money. I only had a $20 bill, and I just thought, you know, it’s the least I could do. And she just wouldn’t take it.”
But Horner was unshakeable, and eventually he put the money in her hand, and walked away. Then he heard their small daughter call out, to ask Horner if he was hungry. Indeed he was, and she came over with a tamale (墨西哥饼) from their cooler. They exchanged thank-yous. Then she got into the car, and the family started to drive away.
“As they’re trying to get into traffic, I unwrapped (打开) the tamale and my money is in the tamale,” Horner said. “They had unwrapped the tamale and they’d put the $20 in and then they’d wrapped it back up.” Horner immediately ran over to their car, which was starting to pull into traffic, to get the father’s attention.

When danger is coming, firefighters are heroes who put their lives at risk to keep everyone safe. But in calmer moments, they can also go the extra mile for someone with something so simple yet impactful.
Many fall in love with firefighting as a child by riding a truck and visiting a fire station. Whether he does or doesn’t grow up to become a firefighter, he will know he is loved and accepted the way he is. This is especially heartwarming when children are at the receiving end of firefighters’ kindness.
Now, one firefighter went out of his way to make sure that a kid didn’t feel left out when his team spent a day with some children from a kindergarten.
These children spent the day in getting a close look at the fire station and the work of firefighters. First, led by firefighters, they paid a visit to the fire station, which made them feel excited. Later, in order to make the children have a more real experience, the station decided to let the young tourists wear red fireman helmets (头盔).
When they wore the red fireman helmets, everyone was so delighted and cheers broke out. But one child was standing with low spirits and didn’t wear a red helmet. It seemed that the child wasn’t welcome, which may influence the child’s confidence. That made the firefighters surprised.
“One child didn’t wear a red fireman helmet. No enough helmets?” One of the firefighters asked the children’s teacher.
“No. Well, his hair was in a high ponytail (马尾辫), preventing him from putting his helmet on. And he likes the high ponytail very much and doesn’t want to break it,” the teacher replied.
“I see. Maybe we can do something, can we mark the width of the child’s ponytail and cut a hole in the tiny helmet to make sure his hair fit s through the hole?” the firefighter said.
Hearing that, the teacher thought it was a good idea.

16-year-old Lisa hated looking at herself in the mirror. She was not comfortable in her own skin and feared people would label her “ugly” after seeing the burn scar on her face. It hurt her every time she had to recall that tragedy where her face was badly burned in a big fire. She enjoyed being alone, lost in books and melodies on her guitar. Shortly after Lisa’s 15th birthday, Chris, Lisa’s father, was stricken by a severe illness and lost his ability to walk. However, Chris managed to provide for the family. He sent his daughters to school and did everything possible to improve their lives. But their difficulties never ceased, mainly after he had to spend much on his mother’s heart treatment. It appeared as though fate had only terrible plans for this family.
Lisa knew everything, and she couldn’t bear to watch her daddy struggling so much. She wanted to help relieve her family’s burden. “What can I do to improve our lives?” Lisa lost in deep thought. One day, a leaflet promoting a local music contest landed on Lisa’s foot. Lisa’s eyes sparkled with hope when she read it and saw that the cash prize was $25,000.
Lisa secretly registered for the music contest. Over the years, she had been passionate about music, skilled at playing the guitar and mastering numerous musical pieces. Now, she needed to compose an original song, sing it and accompany it with her guitar. Lisa locked herself in her room in her spare time, preparing for the contest. In her original composition, she illustrated the joyful moments spent with her family, and she emphasized her heart felt gratitude for her father’s contribution to the entire household. Her lyrics over-flowed with genuine emotion. She tirelessly worked on the song, determined to perfect her performance. With the date for the contest approaching, Lisa spent more time on her preparations. She seemed no longer afraid to look at herself in the mirror. She often stood in front of the mirror, practiced her song and imagined her performance on the stage. Hopefully, she thought she would give her father a big surprise.

“Mom, what’s this?” my little daughter in the living room called and pointed to an instrument box. “Oh, it’s my flute(长笛),” I said and opened it. There was the old silver flute that I played years ago. “Play it, Mom.” my daughter asked excitedly.
“Oh, I don’t know whether I’ve forgotten how to play it,” I said. Then, I was lost in thought. The flute carried me back to the days when I was thirteen. That year, because of my dad’s new job, in the middle term. I moved to a new school and left my old friends. Besides, I was a socially awkward girl. So in the new school, I became very lonely and bored.
Two weeks after I went there, the school band was wanting new members. I extremely wished to join it. I loved music. Joining the band could help change my boring school life. And I could meet people with the same hobby, which would be much easier for me to make new friends. But to join the band, each member needed to buy an instrument and take lessons to learn it. My family was on a tight budget at that time. So I didn’t think my parents would support my wish. Besides, I didn’t want to put further financial pressure on my parents.
That day, I arrived home after school, tired and sad. It was another tough day. My dad was reading the newspaper on the sofa “Hi,” he said. “Hi, Dad,” I answered softly. “What’s the matter?” he questioned, finding there was something wrong with me. “Nothing, Dad,” I replied. “Come over here,” he said, asking me to sit down beside him.
He looked at me as I sat down. Then, he talked with me, wishing to know what was troubling me. Still, I didn’t want to tell him about my loneliness at my new school and my big wish to join the band. However, after he kept asking. I finally told him. Not wanting him to feel stressed, I added I could ultimately deal with my problem without joining the band.

Adam, Nick, and Tom were best friends. Five years after their graduation from college, Nick called Adam and Tom, inviting them to celebrate his birthday on his personal yacht (游艇). They got very excited.
It was a bright and sunny summer day. As Nick was studying the safety measures of the sea journey, he saw Adam and Tom coming towards his yacht. With huge hugs and smiles on every face, the three greeted each other in their usual way. “Thank you boys for coming and making my birthday even more special,” said Nick.
“But before getting started, hope you both know there is a danger zone at a particular point on this sea, ” warned Adam.
“Don’t worry. I will stay away from it. Now let the party begin!” Nick responded, starting to turn the steering wheel (方向盘) of the yacht.
Treating the friends on the beautiful white yacht sailing on the blue water was a perfect idea. They were having a wonderful time, talking, eating and joking. How time flew! It started getting dark.
“Hey guys! It’s time to go back,” Tom shouted.
“Mr. Sailor, turn your ship’s wheel and take us back home,” said Adam.
Little did they know they were going to encounter life-threatening challenges ahead. Unknowingly, Nick crossed the danger zone Adam had mentioned earlier. When realizing this, Nick decided to make a turn immediately. Unfortunately, a strange noise came from the engine and then the yacht stopped. Expert at mending machines, Adam offered to examine the engine and asked Nick to fetch the tool box. Nick was hurrying to get it when he slipped, falling into the sea water.
“Nick!” Tom and Adam screamed.
Panicked, Nick started shouting for help. Tom rushed inside the yacht to get a life jacket to rescue Nick, but didn’t find one. Instead, he found a long rope and out he rushed with it.

For the past 17 years, Cathy had been living in the shadows. Because of some birth problems, her bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Cathy had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to her music teacher Mrs. Owens to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Cathy’s body and said, “Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Cathy was sent back through the door of the music classroom. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Cathy and suggested that she have a try.
Cathy didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Cathy struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, “Cathy, you’re next.” Kind of nervous as she was, Cathy did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Cathy company. When Cathy finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on notice board the next day.
Cathy couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.

About two years ago, I was a high school student in Beijing, getting ready for one of the most important exams of my life. The night before the big day, I carefully packed my backpack with the essentials: pens, erasers, my ID card, and my exam admission ticket. My parents wished me good luck and reminded me to go to sleep early. Feeling confident, I went to bed to make sure I would be well-rested.
The next morning, I woke up feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. After breakfast, I grabbed my backpack and headed to the bus stop. As I boarded the bus, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to pack my pencils, which were necessary for filling out the answer sheet. Panic set in. There was no time to go back home and fetch them, and the nearest store was too far away.
Desperate, I looked around the bus, hoping to spot a fellow student who might have a spare pencil. My eyes landed on a girl about my age, sitting a few seats ahead, lost in her notes. Gathering my courage, I approached her and explained my dilemma (困境), hoping she might be able to help.
To my surprise, she didn’t hesitate. She opened her pencil case and pulled out a couple of pencils, handing them to me with a reassuring smile. “I always carry extra ones, just in case,” she said. “You can take these.”
Relief washed over me as I accepted the pencils, thanking her sincerely. We chatted for a bit, and I learned that her name was Mei, and that she was also heading to the same exam center. She wished me luck, and we parted ways once we arrived.
With the pencils in hand, I felt a renewed sense of confidence as I entered the exam hall. The exam went smoothly, and I felt I had done my best.

I tapped my stick, and the buffalo (水牛) moved forward. We walked along the village road, passing by houses and people working in the fields. Life was simple in our small village in Sindh, Pakistan. Little though I was, I dreamed of going to school.
I heard laughter and saw a group of students. I asked them to show me their books before they could go by. The pictures of people and places in the books were very interesting. I told them I wanted to go to school too and gave their books back. The students smiled at each other and left, while I stayed with my buffalo.
Months passed. Every day, I rose to do housework and herd (放牧) the buffalo. Until one day, I got my chance. Uncle came to visit. “Brother, you must send Rasool Bux to school. Herding buffalo is not his future,” Uncle convinced my parents that all children should go to school. The following week, I enrolled in primary school. Now, armed with my own books, I set out to learn everything. I read textbooks, asked questions, and even read newspapers for my father and his companions.
By the end of the year, I proved to be one of the best students in the school. I resolved to study at college or university in Karachi, a big city over 150 kilometers away. Everyone laughed and made jokes. However, I didn’t give up on my dream.
I have a skin condition that causes white spots on my skin. Some people judged me quietly, but I didn’t let the problems in life bring me down. Rather, they became stepping stones toward realizing my dreams. I turned to writing poetry and practice calligraphy as an outlet for my emotions and creativity. I got published and won competitions, gaining not just recognition but also the confidence to keep moving forward. However, before I began my college study, I was hit with another roadblock.

The sun was hardly up that Christmas morning, so most of the light in the living room came from the little lights on the tree. I’d gotten up early to plug it in (接通电源) and bring a little extra magic into the house before my daughter walked down the stairs to open her gifts.
Gifts had been placed around the base of the tree, under the bottom row of branches, for about a month. Rufus, our senior dog we’d adopted (收养) twelve years ago, hadn’t so much as sniffed (嗅) at them. That morning was different, though, because he watched as my daughter tore the paper off her presents, threw it aside, and cheered at what she found. Next, it was my husband’s turn. He opened his gifts more carefully than our daughter had. Then it was my turn to open the gift. Then it was time for Rufus’s gift. We were excited to give it to him.
It was a new, extra-large bed where he could sleep and rest. He’d been such a wonderful boy for all these years, eager to please, loyal, protective but friendly... He deserved (值得) a nice bed upgrade. We’d taken our time picking that bed out as a family. The colors needed to match the living room because that was the room it’d be in. Rufus was quite like a gentleman. From the first week we had him, he’d run through the house with a bone hanging from the side of his mouth like a pipe. If he’d been a human, he’d have spent most of his time in his study, surrounded by leather, books, and shiny strong wood furniture. So we bought the bed that was the perfect match for the living room, his age, and his personality. We didn’t pack it up in Christmas paper like the other gifts. We just brought it downstairs and lay it in front of him, expecting him to check it out for a few seconds and then jump up, settle in, and almost immediately start snoring (打鼾) on the soft bed.

“I will never forget you,” Meryl said to his pet dog with tears rolling down his cheek (脸颊). With his head leaning to one side, Thone watched his master, “Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” He wagged his tail back and forth, seeming to understand what Meryl was talking about.
“I can’t take care of myself anymore, let alone take care of you,” Meryl cleared his throat. “Soon, I’ll move to an old people’s home, and I’m sorry to say that you can’t come along. They don’t allow dogs there, you know.” “Don’t worry, my friend. I’ll find a nice new home for you. I’ve known the owners of the new home, and they like dogs very much,” Meryl added. “With your good looks, we’ll have no trouble at all. Anyone will be proud to own such a fine dog.”
Thone wagged his tail really hard and walked proudly up and down the kitchen floor. For a moment, the familiar delicious food gave him a feeling of happiness. But then a sense of fear struck again. Thone’s tail hung between his legs and he stood very still.
“Come here.” With great difficulty, Meryl knelt down on the floor and lovingly pulled Thone close to him. He tied a ribbon (丝带) around the dog’s neck with a huge red bow, and then he attached a note to it, which said “Happy New Year! My name is Thone. For breakfast, I like bacon and eggs — even corn will do. For dinner, I prefer mashed potatoes and some meat. That’s all. I eat just two meals a day. In return, I will be your most loyal friend.”
“Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” Thone was confused and his eyes begged. The old Meryl blew his nose into his handkerchief once more. Later, hanging on to a chair, he pulled himself up from the floor. He buttoned his overcoat, reached for the dog’s leash (皮带) and softly said, “Come here, my friend.” He opened the door against a wave of cold air and stepped outside, pulling the dog behind.

Lily was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, the organisation was asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event. Lily went to the event with other volunteers.
There were many people at the event. After seeing their poster, some people came to them and talked with them. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Lily got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lily started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today.”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” another volunteer said.
While they were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to them. He stood in front of their poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
Lily explained what cancer is. Then she said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it.”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help.” Lily nodded and said.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Lily was embarrassed to tell him that they didn’t raise much money. The boy looked into their donation container and only saw a few dollars. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. 【答案】
The man rolled down his window. He just kind of put his hand up. With a big smile on his face, he just said, “Today you, tomorrow me.” The man then gave Horner a wave, rolled up the window, and drove off. The last thing Horner saw was the young girl waving goodbye through the window. He never saw them again. Horner wrote up his story for Reddit, which drew thousands of likes and hundreds of comments. It turned into an essay in The New York Times, and inspired a handful of short films.
Horner knows that the phrase, “Today you, tomorrow me,” wasn’t invented by that stranger in the car. It’s a common expression in Mexico, where he believes the family was from. And it is easy to understand. “It just seemed like some chicken-soup-for-the-soul kind of thing. But when you start taking it apart, it’s kind of big. I think at the end of the day, it just shows you that everyone can be weak in a given situation, and that everyone needs help,” Horner said.

【答案】
With the help of the teacher, the firefighter started carrying out his plan. The teacher held his fingers out to mark the width of the child’s ponytail. At that time, the child felt a little confused, not knowing why the teacher did this. And then the firefighter took out scissors to cut a hole in the tiny helmet, making sure his hair fits through the hole perfectly. Happy with the result, the teacher shared a fist bump with the firefighter, proudly showing off a brand new firefighter helmet.
The firefighter handed the brand new tiny helmet to the child. The child took the helmet happily and put it on. And the new helmet made sure his hair fit through the hole and didn’t break his ponytail. The child was jumping with joy like a deer. Seeing that, all children, teachers and firefighters were happy. And they continued enjoying their experience. What an unforgettable experience for them! What passes for a small gesture makes a huge difference in a kid’s confidence. This small act brought visible joy to the child and made him feel welcome in an otherwise isolating moment.

The big day arrived, and Lisa was nervous. She gathered all her courage and walked onto the stage. Her heart beat fast as she sensed the audiences’ eyes on her, their sympathetic glances directed at her scar. “Just let it go,” she told herself and tried to keep calm. Fingering her guitar, she poured her emotions into singing her original composition. However, she did not make it to the final round. Lisa was terribly upset and returned home heart-broken.
Despite not winning the contest, Lisa’s performance impressed many audiences, including a musician. Three days after the contest, the musician, accompanied by the host of the contest, came to Lisa’s home. The musician offered Lisa the chance to join a band and receive professional music training because Lisa had music al talent. Thrilled by the unexpected opportunity, Lisa’s spirits lifted as she realized that her journey was far from over. With renewed determination, she started this new chapter, eager to see where it would take her. And she realized that talent, not beauty, was what mattered most.

Once upon a time, in a small town, there was a young boy named Sam. He was very kind and loved helping others. He lived with his parents, but they were busy working all the time, so he often felt lonely.
One day, as Sam was walking home from school, he saw a new family had moved into the house next door. They had a daughter about his age named Lily. She was disabled and used a wheelchair to get around. Sam noticed that Lily seemed sad and lonely too.
The next morning, Sam decided to knock on their door and introduce himself. Lily’s mother answered the door and invited him inside. When Lily saw Sam, she smiled for the first time. Sam and Lily quickly became friends, and Sam would visit her every day after school. Sometimes, they would play board games or watch movies together. Other times, Sam would help Lily with her homework.
As the years went by, Sam and Lily’s friendship grew stronger. They were always there for each other, no matter what. One summer, Sam’s parents lost their jobs and couldn’t afford to pay the rent. They were going to have to move away. Sam was upset and didn’t know what to do.
When Lily heard the news, she knew she had to help her friend.

Sam was overjoyed and couldn’t believe how much kindness and love there was in the world.
From then on, Sam and Lily promised to make the world a better place. Not only did they start volunteering at the local animal shelter and helped take care of abandoned pets, but also they visited nursing homes and spent time with the elderly residents. Their acts of kindness inspired others in the town to do the same, and soon, the whole community was coming together to help those in need. Sam realized that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Just as I finished my words, my dad dropped the paper and stood up. He said, “We’ll support you. Buying a flute is not a waste of money. It’s your chance to know your new school and friends better.” I couldn’t believe my ears. But soon, we reached one store, where I was attracted by the shiny instruments. I liked flutes most, so the manager opened a few different ones. “Which do you prefer?” my dad asked. “That one,” I said, pointing to the one that was so shiny and perfect. Hearing it, Dad immediately nodded and paid.
Paragraph 2:
Then, my dad and I walked out of the store, with me carrying the beautiful flute. My heart was filled with joy, not only for the new flute but also because I felt my father’s love. Soon, my boring life changed. I joined the school band and of course, I made new friends. “Please play it, Mom,” my daughter asked again, which brought me back to the moment. “OK. I’ll try,” I replied, running my hands over the flute slowly. Gladly, I didn’t forget how to play it. When the beautiful music sounded, I thought, “Thank you, Dad, for there was more to be treasured in that flute than met the eye.”

【答案】
Just then Adam shouted on top of his voice, “Nick! Look, there’s a shark behind you!” Turning his head, Nick was shocked to find a black figure approaching him. Helpless and frightened, Nick swam towards the yacht like crazy. Tom quickly threw the rope down at Nick, who succeeded in grasping it. With all their strength, Tom and Adam pulled Nick up from the water before the shark could swallow him. But the hungry animal didn’t give up, swimming around the yacht for its dinner. Terrified as the three guys were, they knew they must do something to escape from the danger.
What they had to do was restart the yacht. Though wet through, Nick fetched the tool box in no time. With the tools Adam carefully examined the engine, found out the exact cause of its failure and managed to get the engine working. Its wonderful sound had everyone on board burst into cheers. With Nick turning the steering wheel, the yacht left the danger zone at full speed, leaving the lonely shark far behind. The young guys waved happily at it, heading straight back.

【答案】One possible version:
Cathy rushed to school and glanced at the list on the notice board anxiously. The fear of being rejected came to strike again. “Jeff Green, Rose Black...” she murmured as her eyes moved upward. “Wow!” Cathy abruptly covered her wide-opened mouth, feeling as if her heart would jump out. There, at the top of the list was posted her name. The leading singer! However, whispers around her pulled her back to earth. Just then, she felt a pat on the shoulder. It was Mr. Butler. “We selected you for our faith in your abilities and voice.” Inspired, Cathy worked even harder for the final performance.
Finally, the day for the performance came. Cathy’s eyes danced with excitement as she stepped on to the stage. Standing still, she heard noises among the crowd. Obviously not cheers! Cathy felt nervous again and even her legs began trembling. At that moment, her eyes parked on Mr. Butler at the corner. He nodded and exchanged a determined glance with her, which timely put her heart back in place. With the music rising, Cathy began her singing. Her sweet voice poured and the audience fell into an abrupt silence. When she finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. Cathy White in tears, with so many birth problems in her body, became the shiniest star!

【答案】
After the exam, I searched for Mei to return her pencils. I wandered through the bustling crowd of students, scanning faces and hoping to spot her. Finally, I saw her near the entrance, chatting with some friends. I approached her and handed back the pencils, expressing my heartfelt gratitude once again. Mei smiled warmly and shook her head. “There‘s no need to thank me,” she said. “Helping someone in need is something we all should do. Just remember to pass on the kindness whenever you can.”
Inspired by Mei’s kindness, I decided to pass it on. A few weeks later, I noticed a classmate, Li, struggling with his homework in the library. Remembering Mei’s words, I sat down with Li and patiently explained the concepts he was struggling with. His face lit up with relief and gratitude, just as I did when Mei helped me. Helping him not only lifted his spirits but also brightened my day. From that moment on, I realized that at any time I could help someone, whether it was sharing my notes, offering a kind word, or simply lending an ear.

【答案】
My father’s limited income couldn’t cover my further education. The thought of not being able to pursue my dreams of attending college in Karachi weighed heavily on my heart. Nights were filled with restlessness as I tossed and turned, trying to find a solution. I began to explore scholarships and financial aid opportunities, determined to find a way to make my dream a reality. I worked tirelessly, balancing my studies with part-time jobs and applying to every grant and scholarship I could find.
Finally, I came across an opportunity that could change my life forever. A prestigious college in Karachi was offering scholarships to talented students based on their extracurricular achievements. Excited by this prospect, I gathered all my calligraphy works and prepared for the interview. On the day of the interview, I walked into the room with a mix of nervousness and determination. They asked me questions about my journey and how I overcame obstacles to pursue my dreams. I shared my story, unafraid to reveal my struggles and how writing poetry and practicing calligraphy had become my sanctuary. To my delight, I was offered a full scholarship to the college. That moment, I knew that all the hardships I had faced were worth it.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
However, Rufus had other plans. He was one of the family and everyone else had torn the outside layers of their gifts away to recover the true prizes underneath. He started to check it out the way we expected him to, but the lying-on-it part never happened. All of us humans ended up distracted in one way or another, and Rufus had torn the “wrapping paper” off his gift while no one was watching. Filling was spread all over the carpet and went up from the middle of the bed.
Rufus had followed the rules and done what everyone else did. But things didn’t turn out just the way they were supposed to. We all saw the “Oh, no, I messed up...” realization wash over him. He was ashamed of himself and probably more than a little sad about not having a chance to fall asleep on something so comfortable. Honestly speaking, it would’ve made perfect sense for us to wrap the bed in shinning Christmas paper just like all the other gifts. We had to buy him another bed.

As they were walking in the empty street, dusk was beginning to fall.

【答案】
After a very long time, they stopped before a large house with tall trees in its front. An idea came to Meryl. He gave up the original plan and tied Thone to the tree, giving him the usual delicious food. The moment Thone was busy enjoying his dinner, Meryl ran away, hid behind a tree and looked at him with watery eyes. Minutes later, Thone looked back but couldn’t find his owner “Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” Then the door opened and a young lady came out with a little boy following her.
Through teary eyes, the old Meryl watched from behind the tree as the boy’s mother took the note. After reading the note, the lady raised and looked around but couldn’t find anyone, so she gently took Thone into her house as if saying something kind to him. Seeing this, the old Meryl wiped his eyes with the cold sleeve of his coat with a big smile. Then he disappeared into the night, whispering, “Goodbye, my dear friend. This will be a nice home for you.”

Then some girls came and started talking with them. Nobody thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The boy happily ran to Lily and asked, “Would you accept a donation from children?” Lily couldn’t believe such a little boy would care. Though she didn’t believe it, she said, “yes”. The boy put his hand in his pocket and took out 100 dollars. He said, “I just asked for them from my mother. I really want to help the children suffering from cancer.” After speaking, the little boy put the money into the donation container without hesitation.
Lily was deeply touched. She wanted to thank the boy, but he left soon. Looking at his back, Lily and other volunteers were greatly encouraged. They wanted to try harder to raise money. So instead of just standing there, they went to people and told them about the programme. At the end of the day, they raised over three thousand dollars, a lot more than Lily had expected in the beginning.
