Living a zero-waste lifestyle might seem like a daunting challenge to many, but for Robin Greenfield, an environmental activist, it’s a joyful mission to inspire change.
To promote awareness of waste issues, he created the outstanding “Trash Walk”. Last year, he undertook another walk in Los Angeles. For a month, he lived like an average city resident — eating, shopping, and consuming — while attaching every piece of trash he produced to his body. By the end of the month, he wore a massive “trash suit” made of bottles, plastic, paper, and cans as he wandered through the streets of LA.
And Robin Greenfield is not doing art for art’s sake. He has many useful recommendations on how to avoid trash, how to live sustainably and how to find out what is really important in life. His book “The Story of Stuff” shows the interconnections and contingencies of 21st century capitalism. The other book “Food Freedom” tackles another one of the big problems of consumerist society: the broken system and terrible mechanisms of industrial agriculture. As always, he’s donating the profits and most of his earnings to important causes — this time to Indigenous and Black-led food sovereignty projects, many of which are run by women. He relies on exchanging knowledge and skills to live with minimal financial resources.
Robin Greenfield enhances his authenticity by living his values. He’s working with others to build food systems that are regenerative, fair, and just. He demonstrates contentment through minimal material needs and inspirational actions, such as building sustainable tiny houses from recycled materials — projects he has repeated multiple times.
His point was crystal clear — we don’t usually see the impact of all the waste we produce. But waste doesn’t just disappear. As a walking “trash man”, he invites everyone to imagine — and practically build — a world where protecting the planet becomes second nature.
4. What did Robin Greenfield do during his walk last year?
A. He collected trash from the streets. B. He wore all the trash he generated.
C. He resided in the streets of LA. D. He sold many artworks of trash.
5. Why were his two books mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To emphasize his popularity as an author.
B. To prove the benefits of living sustainably.
C. To show his practical efforts for the environment.
D. To criticize modern capitalism and consumerism.
6. What does Robin Greenfield suggest people do?
A. Donate all their earnings. B. Lead an eco-friendly life.
C. Maximize their material needs. D. Engage in industrial agriculture.
7. Which of the following best describes Robin Greenfield?
A Inspiring and caring. B. Innovative and strict.
C. Passionate and modest. D. Persistent and demanding.
C
Listen carefully to a spoken conversation and you’ll notice that the speakers use a lot of little quasi-words — mm-hmm, um, huh? and the like — that don’t convey any information about the topic of the conversation itself: For many decades, linguists regarded such utterances as largely irrelevant noise. But these little words may be much more important than that. A few linguists now think that they may be crucial traffic signals to control the progression of conversation as well as tools to negotiate mutual understanding.
For most of the history of linguistics, scholars have tended to focus on written language, in large part because that’s what they had records of. But once recordings of conversation became available, they could begin to analyze spoken language the same way as writing. When they did, they observed that interjections — that is, short utterances of just a word or two that are not part of a larger sentence — were ubiquitous in everyday speech.
Many of these interjections serve to regulate the flow of conversation. An um or uh from the speaker, for example, signals that they’re about to pause, but aren’t finished speaking. A quick huh? or what? from the listener, on the other hand, can signal a failure of communication that the speaker needs to repair. In a survey of 31 languages around the world, researchers found that all of them used a short, neutral syllable similar to huh? as a repair signal, probably because it’s quick to produce.
Different interjections can send slightly different signals. Consider, for example, one person describing to another how to build a piece of IKEA furniture, says Allison Nguyen, a psycholinguist at Illinois State University. In such a conversation, mm-hmm might indicate that the speaker should continue explaining the current step, while yeah or OK would imply that the listener is done with that step and it’s time to move on to the next.
8. The phrase “traffic signals” in paragraph 1 emphasizes interjections’ ______.
A decorative role in conversation B. rank-related function in grammar
C. regulatory power in dialogue flow D. evolutionary origin in pronunciation
9. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Universal. B. Complex. C. Limited. D. Formal.
10. What is paragraph3 mainly about?
A. The functions of interjections. B. The signals’ cultural differences.
C. Regulations in a conversation. D. The global incidence of interjections.
11. What does the IKEA furniture example illustrate?
A. Listeners use interjections to demonstrate authority.
B. Context decides interjections’ interpretation difference.
C. Task-directed conversations require more interjections.
D. Speakers adapt interjections based on listeners’ feedback.
D
Imagine trying to convince someone with facts that challenge their long-held opinion, only to find them dismissing or processing the information. This is belief perseverance at work. Interestingly, these beliefs don’t necessarily stem from personal experience; for instance, a child might believe “all lawyers are untrustworthy” merely because an older sibling said so, and then ignore any trustworthy lawyers they encounter later, categorizing them as exceptions.
Often confused with confirmation bias, belief perseverance is distinct. While confirmation bias involves seeking out information that supports one’s preconceptions, belief perseverance is about actively rejecting evidence that could disprove those beliefs, building a psychological barrier around one’s existing views.
This bias emerges in multiple forms. In terms of self-perception, someone might persistently view themselves as bad at public speaking despite receiving applause for presentations, attributing success to luck. Socially, initial judgments can linger: assuming a reserved classmate is unfriendly, even after friendly interactions. Societally, stereotypes about groups — be it racial, gender-based, or political — frequently endure, resisting factual counterarguments.
Research backs this up. In one study, students given false feedback on analyzing suicide notes continued to believe in their “accuracy” or “inaccuracy” even after learning the feedback was fabricated (伪造的). Another experiment showed that beliefs connecting risk-taking to firefighting effectiveness persisted, regardless of discredited supporting data.
Several psychological factors contribute to belief perseverance. The availability heuristic (启发法) makes people rely on easily recalled examples, like assuming all doctors are impatient after one negative encounter. Illusory correlation creates false associations, such as linking a team’s loss to the color of their uniforms. Selective attention further reinforces biases, as individuals tend to notice evidence that confirms their beliefs while overlooking contradictory signs.
Overcoming this bias requires self-awareness. Strategies like counter-explanation — prompting individuals to consider reasons for opposing beliefs — can aid in relaxing the grip of firmly-established mindsets. While complete removal may be unrealistic, recognizing belief perseverance is a crucial step towards more objective thinking in a world filled with information.
12. What is belief perseverance mainly about?
A. Seeking information actively. B. Accepting new evidence easily.
C. Checking exceptions frequently. D. Sticking to beliefs despite proof.
13. How does belief perseverance differ from confirmation bias?
A. It seeks supportive facts. B. It changes views quickly.
C. It dismisses different ideas. D. It relies on personal stories.
14. Which of the following shows belief perseverance?
A. A student favors a teacher’s praise. B. Someone assumes bad after wins.
C. People follow popular opinions. D. A child believes parents’ advice.
15. What helps fight belief perseverance?
A. Ignoring all opposing thoughts. B. Trusting first impressions deeply.
C. Considering reasons from another angle. D. Relying on past successful experiences.

I suppose everyone has one particular childhood Christmas that stands out more than any other. Only a small child, I could not name the precise year; it is an insignificant blur in my mind, but the events of that Christmas will live forever in my heart.
My father who had been employed at Burlington, never let on to us that we were having financial difficulties. We knew only that ‘ my daddy, who usually worked long, difficult hours, was now home more than we had ever remembered; each day seemed to be a holiday.
Mama, a homemaker, now’ sought work in the local textile mills, but jobs were scarce. Daddy’s unemployment check would now be our family’s only source of income. For my parents, the Christmas season brought mounds of worries, crowds of sighs and tears and cascades of prayers.
I could only imagine what happened between my parents in those moments when the answer came. Perhaps it took a while for the ideas to fully form, but somehow it did. While dark, rough-skinned hands cut, hammered and painted the wood. Where I was while all of this was taking place, I had no idea. But somehow my parents found time to pour themselves into my gift, and the excitement of Christmas was once again born for the entire family.
That Christmas Eve, the sun was just setting over the distant horizon when I heard the roar of an unexpected motor in the driveway. Looking outside, I could hardly believe my eyes. Uncle Buck and Aunt Charlene had driven all the way from Georgia to surprise us. Packed tightly in their car sat my grandparents. I also couldn’t help but notice innumerable gifts for all of us, all neatly packaged and tied with beautiful bows. They had known that it would be a difficult Christmas and they came to help.

A. Inspiring and caring. B. Innovative and strict.
C. Passionate and modest. D. Persistent and demanding.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. A

A. decorative role in conversation B. rank-related function in grammar
C. regulatory power in dialogue flow D. evolutionary origin in pronunciation
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. B

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了口语中的感叹词在对话中的重要作用,这些感叹词不仅不是无关紧要的噪音,反而可能是控制对话进程和协商相互理解的关键信号。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“A few linguists now think that they may be crucial traffic signals to control the progression of conversation as well as tools to negotiate mutual understanding. (现在,一些语言学家认为,它们可能是控制对话进程的关键traffic signals,也是协商相互理解的工具)”可知,第一段中的“traffic signals”一词强调了感叹词在对话流程中的调控作用。故选C。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“When they did, they observed that interjections — that is, short utterances of just a word or two that are not part of a larger sentence — were ubiquitous in everyday speech. (当他们这样做时,他们观察到感叹词——即只是一两个词组成的简短话语,不属于更大的句子的一部分——在日常口语中是ubiquitous)”结合语境可知,感叹词在日常口语中是“普遍存在的”。A. Universal普遍的;B. Complex复杂的;C. Limited有限的;D. Formal正式的。故选A。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Many of these interjections serve to regulate the flow of conversation. (这些感叹词中的许多都是用来调节谈话的流畅性的。例如,说话人说“嗯”或“嗯”,表示他们要暂停,但还没有说完。快啊?还是别的什么?另一方面,从听者那里可以看出说话者需要修复的沟通失败。在一项对全球31种语言的调查中,研究人员发现,所有语言都使用类似huh?作为修复信号,可能是因为它产生得很快)”可知,第三段主要讲述的是感叹词的功能。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Consider, for example, one person describing to another how to build a piece of IKEA furniture, says Allison Nguyen, a psycholinguist at Illinois State University. In such a conversation, mm-hmm might indicate that the speaker should continue explaining the current step, while yeah or OK would imply that the listener is done with that step and it’s time to move on to the next. (伊利诺伊州立大学的心理语言学家Allison Nguyen说,例如,考虑一个人向另一个人描述如何组装一件宜家家具。在这样的对话中,“mm-hmm”可能表示说话者应该继续解释当前步骤,而“yeah”或“OK”则意味着听众已经完成了该步骤,是时候进入下一步了)”可推知,宜家家具的例子说明了在不同的语境下,听众对感叹词的理解会有所不同。故选B。
14 Which of the following shows belief perseverance?
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

My father, who had been employed at Burlington, never let on to us that we were having financial difficulties.

【答案】参考范文
The next morning I awoke early and dashed to the living room. It was a sea of colorful packages. I was like kids in a candy store, my eyes wide with excitement. I tore into the gifts from our relatives, oohing and aahing over each new gift. But in the back of my mind, I couldn’t help but wonder about the gift my parents had made. I knew they must have put so much effort into it. At this moment, I noticed my parents watching me, their faces filled with a mix of joy and a hint of nervousness.
Daddy approached and gave the gift of love to me. At first glance, the simple wooden toy seemed plain compared to the store-bought gifts. But as I looked closer, I saw the smooth texture of the wood, the carefully painted color, and the little details like the perfectly placed hinges. I remembered how hard my parents had worked, a wave of warmth washing over me. “Thank you,” I said, hugging my parents tightly. In that moment, I realized that this simple wooden toy, made with love, was the most precious gift of all.
