【原文】 Hello, everyone, and welcome to the White House! I’ll be your guide today. The building known as the White House is the home of the president of the United States and his family. The president also has his office here. In 1790, America’s first president, George Washington, wanted to build a new presidential home. A competition was held to find a designer to build it. Architect James Hoban won the contest. He planned a building of grayish-white sandstone. The color gave the house its name. Work started in 1792. But the house was not ready before the end of President Washington’s term. America’s second president, John Adams, and his wife moved into the house on Nov 1st, 1800. By then, the building had six completed rooms. Many of the rooms were still empty when John Adams left office a few months later. Other presidents tried to complete the White House. But the British burned it down during the War of 1812. The White House was rebuilt after that war. Since then, it has been enlarged, repaired and almost totally rebuilt. Today, the White House has 132 rooms. Visitors can walk through some of the public ones.

William was a student who was the only son of his wealthy parents and felt entitled to the luxuries he had in his life. On a class field trip, William met the forester, Victor, who had been living in a wooden house in the forest over ten years. When learning Victor’s life, William laughed at him with his friends.
During the field trip, William and his classmates passed by an entrance to a cave. “This looks so cool!” William exclaimed. He wanted to go inside the cave, but his teacher stopped him.
The next day, William reached the cave with his four friends, only to find they couldn’t take their schoolbags through the entrance. One by one, the teenagers entered the cave and were amazed to see how wide it was from the inside. Albert picked a large stone up and hit one of the walls with it. “This place is so cool!” he laughed quietly before the rocks from the wall came falling.
“Watch out, Albert!” William said and pulled Albert towards himself. The teenagers screamed in fear when they saw the rocks fall. They couldn’t see anything because of the dust floating in the air.
The friends were scared when they realized they were trapped in the cave. The teenagers started screaming for help, hoping someone would hear them.
Fate sent Victor to the cave. The forester picked berries every other day from the trees near the cave. While he was walking back to his house, five bright-colored schoolbags caught his attention. Then he approached the cave and shouted, “Hey! Who’s in there?”
“I’m William! I came here yesterday with my teacher! Help us, please! We are stuck!”
“Okay, calm down, children! I’ll help you out!” Victor said.
Victor quickly called 911 and informed them about the emergency. Thinking the paramedics would take at least twenty minutes to arrive, he decided to help the kids himself before it was too late. Victor quickly grabbed a shovel and a flashlight and rushed back to the cave’s entrance. Meanwhile, William and his friends tried to stay calm. A few minutes later, they could see the flashlight shine through the cave’s entrance. Seconds later, they rushed outside the cave and took a deep breath in the fresh air. Just then, the paramedics arrived.

When making decisions, most people view cost as an important consideration. While price is undoubtedly important, what about some hidden costs that also come into play? For example, what are the long—term effects of your decision? Have you considered how your decision impacts your relationships? Simply put, hidden costs may be invisible to the naked eye, but they're very visible (可见的) to your wallet. Ignoring these factors can cost you a lot.
Consider a scene where a manager cuts costs by asking some workers to leave. While this move reduces salary expenses, how will it impact the morale (士气) and loyalty of the remaining employees? Similarly, imagine somebody spending hours surfing the web, lost in searching for cheaper things. The question is whether the savings equal the spent time. If cost is your only consideration, you'll pay the price. Price Isn't the Only Cost!
Furthermore, even if cost is the only factor in your decision—making, all of the “true costs” should be considered. For example, if you're thinking about buying new technology the equipment cost is only part of the price. People will need training, the software may need customization, and you'll probably lose productivity until people get up to speed. Those are real costs too.
In addition, even when price is the main consideration, it's important to tell the difference between price and value. For example, when you're investing in a high—quality product from a famous organization, compare maintenance (保养) and repair costs with its competitors, assess the product life span, and hear what existing customers have to say. As the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”
Always keep in mind that every time you say “yes” to one thing, you're certainly saying “no” to another. So, in decision—making, always consider invisible costs. This ensures you're aiming for the best solution rather than a good one. After all, choices are easy. The tough part is living with them.
28.What does the underlined phrase “come into play” in paragraph I mean?
A.Come into sight. B.Play a part. C.Come into use. D.Play around.
29.What may be the hidden cost of firing workers?
A.Reducing salary expenses. B.Cutting costs of the company.
C.Doing wonders for the workers' morale. D.Discouraging the remaining workers.
30.How is the passage mainly developed?
A.By giving examples. B.By listing figures.
C.By using space order. D.By explaining concepts.
31.What can we learn from this passage?
A.You get what you pay for. B.Price is the main consideration.
C.Considering the best solution is easy. D.Be thoughtful when making decisions.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了在做决策时,除了考虑显而易见的成本外,还应考虑一些隐藏的成本,这些隐藏的成本可能对决策的长期效果产生重大影响。
28.词句猜测题。根据文章第一段“For example, what are the long—term effects of your decision? Have you considered how your decision impacts your relationships? Simply put, hidden costs may be invisible to the naked eye, but they're very visible (可见的) to your wallet. Ignoring these factors can cost you a lot.”(在做决定时,大多数人把成本视为一个重要的考虑因素。 “come into play”意为“起作用”。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“While this move reduces salary expenses, how will it impact the morale (士气) and loyalty of the remaining employees?”(虽然这个举动减少了工资支出,但它将如何影响剩下的员工的士气和忠诚度?)可推知,解雇员工的隐藏成本可能是剩下的员工的士气和忠诚度受到影响。故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“For example, what are the long—term effects of your decision? Have you considered how your decision impacts your relationships? Simply put, hidden costs may be invisible to the naked eye, but they're very visible(可见的) to your wallet. Ignoring these factors can cost you a lot.”(在做决定时,大多数人把成本视为一个重要的考虑因素。 ,再根据第三段“For example, if you're thinking about buying new technology the equipment cost is only part of the price. People will need training, the software may need customization, and you'll probably lose productivity until people get up to speed. Those are real costs too. ”(例如,如果你正在考虑购买新技术,设备成本只是价格的一部分。人们将需要培训,软件可能需要定制,在人们跟上速度之前,您可能会失去生产力。这些也是实际成本。)可知,文章通过举例的方式,说明了在做决策时,除了考虑显而易见的成本外,还应考虑一些隐藏的成本,这些隐藏的成本可能对决策的长期效果产生重大影响。故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Always keep in mind that every time you say “yes” to one thing, you're certainly saying “no” to another. So, in decision—making, always consider invisible costs. This ensures you're aiming for the best solution rather than a good one. After all, choices are easy. The tough part is living with them.”(始终记住,每次你对一件事说“是”,你肯定对另一件事说“否”。

There are five trillion (万亿) pieces of plastic in our oceans. Most of the plastic found at the bottom of the sea is waste such as plastic bottles and bags, designed to be used just once, then thrown away. Some researchers found that sea creatures living in the deepest reaches of the sea had small pieces of plastic in their stomachs and muscles. A huge whale washed ashore in Spain last year with 28 kilos of plastic in its stomach died.
This year Sir David calls for actions against plastic pollution and the UN leads a campaign against plastic pollution seen as one of the world's most pressing environmental issues. The European Union is set to approve a total ban on one-use plastics. Bangladesh (孟加拉国) became the first country to ban plastic bags in 2002, after floods linked to plastic waste. Since then. 54 countries have banned lightweight plastic bags. According to Greenpeace statistics, every minute of every day, the same amount of a truck of plastic enters the world's oceans Waste such as bottles, nappies and beer holders can last for up to 450 years in the environment Some plastics last for 1, 000 years.
Andy Sharpless, CEO of a non-profit group Oceana says, “Our focus on recycling is, unfortunately, making the problem worse. Recycling will never stop the flow of plastics into our seas, so to focus on recycling efforts is a fatal mistake. In fact, plastic bottles usually made from natural plastic, if recycled, can become something like clothes and carpets. This change in the quality makes the use of recycled plastic limited.”
“Governments need to do their part too,” Sharpless argues, “and big businesses need to shoulder more responsibility — as the central problem is the amount of plastic being produced.” “The solution needs to focus on both usage of plastic and making it in large quantities.” says TrewinRestorick. CEO of environmental behaviour change charity Hubbub.
32.What can we know about the plastic in the ocean?
A.Plastic is polluting the oceans. B.Sea creatures are fed plastic.
C.Plastic can disappear in the seas. D.Plastic pollution has been taken seriously.
33.How does Andy Sharpless feel about current plastic recycling?
A.Supportive. B.Critical. C.Indifferent. D.Appreciative.
34.What is TrewinRestorick's suggestion on how to deal with plastic pollution?
A.Recycle more plastic. B.Raising awareness of environmental protection.
C.Limiting plastic production. D.Find alternatives to plastic.
35.In which part of a newspaper can we see this text?
A.Opinion. B.Culture. C.Environment. D.Entertainment.

Ways to keep your brain young
Every brain changes with age, and mental function changes along with it. Mental decline is common, and it's one of the most feared consequences of aging. But cognitive(认知的) damage is not unavoidable. 36 .
Get mental stimulation
Through research with mice and humans, scientists have found that brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells. 37 Read, take courses, and try “mental gymnastics,” such as word puzzles or math problems that require mental effort like drawing, painting, and other crafts.
Get physical exercise
38 . People who exercise regularly increase the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen- rich blood to the region of the brain that is responsible for thought. Exercise also spurs the development of new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells.
39
Good nutrition can help your mind as well as your body. For example, people that eat a Mediterranean style diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins are less likely to develop cognitive impairment and dementia. In this way, both your blood sugar and blood pressure will be in good control.
Care for your emotions
People who are anxious, depressed, sleep- deprived, or exhausted tend to score poorly on cognitive function tests. Immediate actions should be taken to prevent cognitive decline. Neglecting your emotional well- being can have a profound impact on your ability to think clearly, make decisions, and maintain a high level of mental sharpness. 40 .
A.Improve your diet
B.Improve your blood sugar
C.Enough sleep is of great importance for brain
D.Research shows that using your muscles helps your mind

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village. The village thrived in the heart of a big jungle. Surrounded by the mountain s and in the shade of green trees, the villagers happily lived a life of bliss. All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read let alone write, and Hannah was one of them.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things. She loved to create stories in her head and used to imagine herself as one of her characters.
One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous quests, she came upon an abandoned cottage. The cottage looked very old in its condition. The door was barely hanging and the wood was chipping away. Even though Hannah’s mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity got the best of her.
She tip-toed slowly to the door and slowly opened it and she was left stunned. In front of Hannah was a room full of books! Books glistering in the dust, basking in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Hannah’s excitement was visible on her face as she jumped up and down with glee!
She dusted the books, the shelves, and what was left of the furniture. Hannah broomed, swept, and dusted all day long until she realized that it was dark and she had to go back to her home. She met her friends on the way home who were curious by what Hannah was carrying. With excitement, Hannah shared everything with her friends. She was thinking that her friends will share her excitement but instead, she heard roars of laughter!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Hannah was confused by this reaction and a little hurt too, but she did not give up on her books. The next day, she quickly ate her breakfast and made her way to the cottage again. When reading the books, Hannah found they were too interesting filled with stories about different creatures. Each page was just an adventure waiting to be embarked on. Hannah’s imagination took her to a world of talking animals, mystical creatures, and daring nights. The little girl was so inspired by the books that the characters and the stories within them became her mentor. She learned the power of love and friendship, and that the true strength lies within one’s own heart!
With the good in heart, she decided to share the tales with the people of her village. She wanted to light the sparks of curiosity and imagination in her villagers. Making this her mission, Hannah started telling tales every day at her cottage. She added her own touch of curiosity every now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. More and more people would gather around Hannah in awe as she told her stories. The old cottage was no longer withering away as people from her own village helped her build the cottage again. They transformed it together into a paradise of adventures and imagination. Hannah reminded everyone through her tales of the importance of human connection, empathy, and love.

E.Here are some ways you can help maintain brain function
