American Jake Pinnick comes from a small town called Kewanee.
Pinnick said when he told friends and family he wanted to go to the Wudang Kungfu Academy in China, the response was typical. “It’s not a usual thing to say, but it is pretty normal for kids to want to get out of a place like Kewanee. Most kids say something like they want to move to Hollywood and become an actor,” said the 30-year-old. “When I first thought about it, it was daydreaming for myself, too.”
Once he found himself at the academy, Pinnick said fitting in was softened by other foreigners who were in the area and a part of the school. Getting used to the way of life was surprisingly easy given the peaceful nature to it. Pinnick said after a while, he found himself more at home in Wudang than he ever felt back home in Kewanee. Locals were more than welcoming and willing to engage.
“The culture shock wasn’t that bad. Surprisingly, I find I have more of that going back to America now... learning the language did take some time, but everyone around the school was familiar with foreigners, so we had a lot of fun speaking broken English and Chinese back and forth at the start.”
After he settled into a routine. Pinnick set about engaging himself in Chinese culture, including Kungfu-training. He was also attracted by the philosophical tradition most well-known for the idea of living in harmony with the universe.
Pinnick said he had to go home after the first six months and immediately wanted to return to China, feeling as if it had now become his home more than America, and he had begun a process of rewriting himself as a person overseas.
His life now goes around training, teaching and studying. He graduated from the academy in 2014 and still helps teach there.
Pinnick said the goal is to one day return to America and teach what he has learned. Looking back on his amazing journey, Pinnick said he has grown by leaps and bounds from a small-town American kid who had a daydream he could not shake.
24. What did Pinnick’s family think of his idea of learning Kungfu?
A. Creative. B. Disappointing. C. Challenging. D. Unrealistic.
25. What mainly helped Pinnick get used to the life in China?
A. His fluent Chinese. B. The friendly local culture.
C. His peaceful nature. D. Other foreign teachers there.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pinnick planned to leave for Hollywood when he was a kid.
B. At the start Pinnick needn’t spend much time in learning Chinese.
C. Pinnick began to write a book after he settled in Wudang Academy.
D. Pinnick’s life now consists of training, teaching and studying.

C.
When considering the members of my social network, I often find myself enveloped in pure feelings of love and warmth, affection and support. A handful, however, arouse quite different emotions — a mixture of eagerness and fear. In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can exhaust all my goodwill. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies. Psychologists call them “ambivalent relationships”. According to a wealth of research these relationships are often more stressful. They can damage your mental and physical health.
Knowing this, the simple solution would seem to be to cut ties with these people. But our relationships with frenemies aren’t simple and ditching (摆脱) them isn’t always possible or even desirable.
To capture interpersonal dynamics, Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her Utah-based Brigham Young University colleagues designed a scale identifying four relationship categories. Try it: pick people in your network and answer two questions on a 1-6 scale. When you are feeling in need of advice, understanding or a favour, how helpful is your connection? Likewise, how upsetting is your connection?
People scoring 1 on both are indifferent relationships. Those who score high on helpfulness and low on upset are supportive ties; low on helpfulness and high on upset are aversive relationships; both high indicate ambivalent connections — frenemies. They may be incredibly generous when you have a problem yet can also lash out (怒斥) with a bitter put-down when they feel envious or threatened.
We might hope the good outweighs the bad in such relationships, but research complicates this. Holt-Lunstad’s team found that simply knowing that an ambivalent connection was in the next room as participants prepared to give a speech was enough to send their blood pressure rocketing. It also slowed their recovery after the task. In fact, even unintentional reminders of a frenemy can shatter our peace of mind.
Furthermore, ambivalent connections contribute to telomere decline. Telomeres, protective caps at chromosome (染色体) ends, prevent DNA damage during cell division. As we age, telomeres wear down, and, when they become too short, cells may start to malfunction or die. Shorter telomeres increase the risk of age-related diseases.
The problems of ambivalent connections are hard to solve, especially in work or family. Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection, so that we could manage expectations, focus more on the good in these people and feel compassion for their unpleasant streaks, while also attempting to reduce contact when they cause stresses. Just as importantly this has prompted me to consider my own behavior — are there relationships in which I am the frenemy?
28. What does the underlined word “ambivalent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Giving help or encouragement. B. Continuing or developing gradually.
C. Having a mixture of opposing feelings. D. Happening sometimes and not at other times.
29. The author uses Julianne Holt-Lunstad’s scale to ______.
A. measure the level of generosity in friendships
B. predict the outcome of conflicts with frenemies
C. show it’s difficult to break up with frenemies.
D. compare the benefits of different connections
30. What can we learn about frenemies from the passage?
A. Ambivalent connections can shorten telomere to prevent DNA damage.
B. Frenemies don’t need to say a word to cause anxiety.
C. Interacting with frenemies hardly results in helpful connections.
D. High expectations on frenemies improve the relationship.
31. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Understanding and Managing Frenemies B. The Complexities of Human Relationships
C. The Impact of Frenemies on Our Well-being D. The Double-Edged Sword of Social Connections
C 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据划线词上文“In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can exhaust all my goodwill. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies.(心情好的时候,这些人可以带来一个充满乐趣的夜晚,但在错误的时刻,他们会耗尽我所有的善意。如果这听起来很熟悉,那么你也有友敌)”可知,此处指对朋友的矛盾情感,ambivalent意为“矛盾的”,故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。第二段中“But our relationships with frenemies aren’t simple and ditching (摆脱) them isn’t always possible or even desirable.(但我们与友敌的关系并不简单,抛弃他们并不总是可能的,甚至也不可取)”提到有时候不可能抛弃友敌,甚至这样做不可取,第三段“To capture interpersonal dynamics, Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her Utah-based Brigham Young University colleagues designed a scale identifying four relationship categories.(为了捕捉人际动态,Julianne Holt-Lunstad和她在犹他州杨百翰大学的同事设计了一个量表,确定了四种关系类型)”以及下文具体介绍了Julianne Holt-Lunstad和同事关于识别四种关系类型的研究,最后一段中“The problems of ambivalent connections are hard to solve, especially in work or family.(矛盾关系的问题很难解决,尤其是在工作或家庭中)”得出结论,所以作者使用Julianne Holt-Lunstad的量表是为了说明很难和友敌决裂,故选C。
根据第五段中“Holt-Lunstad’s team found that simply knowing that an ambivalent connection was in the next room as participants prepared to give a speech was enough to send their blood pressure rocketing.(Holt-Lunstad的研究小组发现,当参与者准备演讲时,只要知道隔壁房间里有一种矛盾的联系,就足以让他们的血压飙升)”可知,友敌不需要说一句话就能引起焦虑,故选B。
根据全文内容,结合第一段中“If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies.(如果这听起来很熟悉,那么你也有友敌)”和最后一段中“Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection, so that we could manage expectations, focus more on the good in these people and feel compassion for their unpleasant streaks, while also attempting to reduce contact when they cause stresses. Just as importantly this has prompted me to consider my own behavior — are there relationships in which I am the frenemy?(简单地意识到一段关系的矛盾本质可能会提供一些保护,这样我们就可以管理期望,更多地关注这些人的优点,对他们不愉快的性格感到同情,同时在他们造成压力时也试图减少接触。同样重要的是,这促使我思考自己的行为——在某些关系中,我是友敌吗?)”可知,文章讲述了作者对社交网络中一些关系复杂的个体感到既期待又害怕,引出“友敌”的概念,接着介绍了Julianne Holt-Lunstad和同事关于识别四种关系类型的研究,表明矛盾关系的问题很难解决,最后分享了自己如何处理这些矛盾关系,A项“理解和管理友敌”为最佳标题,故选A。

阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。
Do We Need Art in Our Lives
No one will be surprised to hear that the arts are under fire in this day and age. We view the arts as something of a hobby, something that’s fun but certainly can’t pay the rent. If it’s not a useful skill, no wonder arts funding is being cut in schools. Do we really need art in our lives?
In schools, time and money is at a premium (稀有而珍贵), now more than ever. With teachers having to fit so many lessons into every day, it’s easy to see why art is dropping more and more by the wayside. Budgets are dropping at an alarming rate, and what school is going to drop teaching in essential subjects such as math or science when they can drop art instead?
It seems as though the loss of art in daily life is a sad fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be. There are actually a lot of practical uses for art for many people. For example, art therapy has helped people with a range of illnesses, both mental and physical, cope with their symptoms. Art is found almost anywhere you look in your home. Practical items, such as bedspreads, furniture or clothing, are all art forms in themselves and arouse emotions in the people interacting with them.
Art also gives us insight into the world. History tells us what happened and when it happened, but it can’t tell us how the population at large felt about it, which is where art steps in. We know a lot about how people in the past lived and worked, because their art has given us such a deep insight into their daily lives. We wouldn’t have that insight without it.
Most of all, we need art in our lives as it gives us a form of self-expression. Being able to talk about our feelings is essential to staying healthy. You may not think you talk about your feelings, but you may express them in other ways. Some like to cook or bake, some like to work on machinery, and others may like to paint or draw. Whatever you like to do in your spare time, you’re probably creating art every day.
So, do we need art in our lives? Many people would say no, but the art they’re thinking of is the art you see in galleries. Art is actually much more accessible and is truly needed in everyday life. It helps those in need, gives people in the future an idea of what life was like, and is a vital form of self-expression.
32. Why do some schools drop art?

33. From which three aspects can art benefit our lives?
__________________________________________________________________________________
34. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
We need art in our lives but art only exists in galleries and theatres.
__________________________________________________________________________________
35. Explain how art benefits you by giving an example. (About 40 words)
__________________________________________________________________________________
32. Because time and money is at a premium / limited.
33. Art has a lot of practical uses; it gives people insight into the world; it gives people a form of self-expression.
34. We need art in our lives but art only exists in galleries and theatres.
According to the passage, art is much more accessible. It is part of our life. So art is everywhere not just in galleries and theatres.
35. Art eases stress and fosters self-expression. When I feel overwhelmed, I often turn to painting. Creating art allows me to channel my emotions into something tangible, which not only improves my mood but also gives me a sense of accomplishment.
由文章第二段中的“In schools, time and money is at a premium (稀有而珍贵), now more than ever. With teachers having to fit so many lessons into every day, it’s easy to see why art is dropping more and more by the wayside. (在学校里,时间和金钱是非常重要的,现在比以往任何时候都重要。老师们每天都要上这么多课,很容易理解为什么艺术越来越被搁置在一边。)”可知,有些学校放弃艺术,是因为时间和金钱是宝贵的或者说有限的。故答案为:Because time and money is at a premium / limited.
由文章第三段中的“There are actually a lot of practical uses for art for many people. For example, art therapy has helped people with a range of illnesses, both mental and physical, cope with their symptoms. Art is found almost anywhere you look in your home. Practical items, such as bedspreads, furniture or clothing, are all art forms in themselves and arouse emotions in the people interacting with them. (实际上,对很多人来说,艺术有很多实际用途。例如,艺术疗法已经帮助患有一系列精神和身体疾病的人应对他们的症状。在家里,艺术几乎随处可见。实用的物品,如床罩、家具或衣服,本身都是艺术形式,并能激发与之互动的人的情感。)”第四段中的“Art also gives us insight into the world. (艺术也让我们洞察世界。)”、第五段中的“Most of all, we need art in our lives as it gives us a form of self-expression. Being able to talk about our feelings is essential to staying healthy. (最重要的是,我们在生活中需要艺术,因为它给了我们一种自我表达的形式。)”可知,艺术能从以下三个方面有益于我们的生活:艺术有很多实际用途;它让人们洞察世界;它给了人们一种自我表达的形式。故答案为:Art has a lot of practical uses; it gives people insight into the world; it gives people a form of self-expression.
由文章最后一段中的“Art is actually much more accessible and is truly needed in everyday life. It helps those in need, gives people in the future an idea of what life was like, and is a vital form of self-expression. (艺术实际上更容易接近,而且是日常生活中真正需要的。它帮助那些需要帮助的人,让未来的人们了解生活是什么样的,是自我表达的一种重要形式。)”可知,艺术很容易获得。这是我们生活的一部分。因此,艺术无处不在,而不仅仅是画廊和剧院。故答案为:We need art in our lives but art only exists in galleries and theatres. According to the passage, art is much more accessible. It is part of our life. So art is everywhere not just in galleries and theatres.
Art eases stress and fosters self-expression. When I feel overwhelmed, I often turn to painting. Creating art allows me to channel my emotions into something tangible, which not only improves my mood but also gives me a sense of accomplishment.

I hope this email finds you well. I’m writing to invite you to join me in the upcoming school talent show themed “Show Your True Self and Shine in Youth” in our school.
The event is scheduled to be held at the school auditorium next Friday afternoon. The heme of this year emphasizes self-expression, so students will be inspired to showcase their unique talents in various forms — whether through music, dance, poetry or even innovative art performances. What’s more, interactive workshops where students can try some simple performances or crafts, such as conducting Chinese calligraphy or paper cutting, are also advocated.

B. At the start, Pinnick needn’t spend much time in learning Chinese.
C. Pinnick began to write a book after he settled in Wudang Academy.
D. Pinnick’s life now consists of training, teaching and studying.
27. What did Pinnick gain from his experience in China?
A. A large fortune. B. A career choice.
C. A Kungfu certificate. D. A good reputation.
