Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools. Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheel, the introduction of the steam engine(蒸汽机), the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of society. In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus(纸莎草纸)was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts. The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well. Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life. Let's remember that we hold in our hand the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it. 48.The word“mountains”in the third paragraph refers to(指代)“something to      ”. A.explain the use of electricity B.lower the students' scores C.stop social development D.change the law of the country 49.The lawyers started to write the law of the country      . A.before their thoughts were changed B.when papyrus was first used C.as soon as they recorded their names D.after they took an important exam 50.The underlined word “utilitarian” in the passage means “      ”. A.cheap B.boring C.special D.useful 51.What is the best title for this passage? A.A Powerful Tool B.An Important Law C.A Valuable Record D.An Exciting Event C Scientists who study happiness have evidence to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood, for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most of them. In studies, behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate (低估) how much the ones receiving kindness value their behavior. In the experiments, about 1, 000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experience and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and receiver had to rate (评分) how “big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual experience. For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did. At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influences on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected. These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can? 52.What did the receivers do in the experiments? A.They showed kindness to others. B.They guessed the performers’ feelings. C.They rated how valuable the performers’ act of kindness was. D.They compared the performers’ expectations with their actual results. 53.What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A.Different purposes of the research. B.More evidence for the research results. C.Possible influences of the research findings. D.Another explanation of the research methods. 54.What is the writer’s attitude towards showing kindness to others? A.Supportive. B.Unclear. C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested. 55.What is the main idea of this article? A.Being kind can reduce one’s happiness as expected. B.Kindness can have unexpectedly positive influences. C.Choosing kindness is more difficult than expected. D.Showing kindness is more valuable than receiving it. D To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don’t question never truly think for themselves. Advancements(进步) are made when thinkers start to question. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist whose ideas explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them! Brilliant minds can make up and coming thinkers believe they are not as good as the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current ideas instead of questioning them. I like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental weakness. I was certain that my parents, my teachers were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn’t question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind’s independence was first developed in the classroom. Astem, a 65-year-old science teacher, once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that. One day, however, I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made of particles(粒子). I started to question my beliefs. I went to the library, read about Einstein’s discovery that puzzles the world’s greatest thinkers—Light behaves as both a particle and a wave. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth. Each new year brought more new facts, and I found myself in the library after school trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are good tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. That’s how I developed my independent mind. Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years — maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery, which is the key to making progress for human beings! 56.In this passage, Aristotle is taken as an example to show that ________. A.he is the greatest and respected scientist of all B.huge influence of great thinkers may stop human thought from developing C.advancements are made when thinkers start to question D.great thinkers make mistakes and then correct them 57.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 has an adverbial clause which expresses ________. A.reason B.purpose C.result D.time 58.Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage? A. B. C. D. 59.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.The author is not quite sure about his future. B.We human beings are afraid of dreaming about the future. C.The things about black holes will change in two years. D.Questioning is necessary to intellectual advancement. V. 口语运用。(每小题2分,共10分) 阅读下面对话,根据对话内容从下面的七个选项中选择五个填入空白处,使对话通顺、合理,意思完整,并在答题卡上将其序号涂黑。 A: Hi, Jack. Wan Bo, a university student, was painting while his classmate Tang Qi was making a wooden box by the river. A little boy riding on a rocking horse caught their eye by chance. It brought them back to their childhood, warm and happy. “Why not try to make one by ourselves?”said Wan Bo.“You are good at making things and I am interested in painting.” “Actions speak louder than words,”Tang Qi said. Then, the two young men began to collect some information about it. During those days, watching videos about carving(雕刻)and shaping wood into horse shapes on the Internet became an important part of their life. Several months later, a wooden rocking horse appeared. They felt so excited that they put the picture of it on the Internet right away. To their surprise, it attracted lots of people's attention and some even hoped to order one. The two young men thought it might be a good chance. They sent some forms to the customers to make a survey. According to the result, they made each customer a special rocking horse. These horses were quite different from those produced in other factories, and they soon became popular among the customers. In the first year of their new hobby, Wan and Tang made thirteen rocking horses. Sometimes, they also repaired rocking horses for people. They made the old ones look new again. Animals use body language to tell each other how they feel and what they think. Here is a quick look at how some of our animal friends send messages to us and to each other. Dogs use sounds, body movements, and their tails to communicate. When a dog is happy, its ears will stand up and its eyes will be wide open. The dog will start barking, moving its tail, and running around in circles or jumping up and down to show you that it wants to play. A dog that is afraid will lie on its back and close its eyes. The dog may show its teeth and lower its body so that it is close to the ground. The dog may also shake, and it will put its tail between its legs. When a dog is angry, its main body language is showing its teeth and growling. The dog will try making itself look as big as possible. The tail will stand straight out from the body. Elephants also use noises and body language to express themselves. An elephant’s sense of smell is highly developed: An elephant can smell how another elephant is feeling and even tell if it is sick. The elephant’s nose, or trunk, is also used to make noises and to welcome other elephants. Different noises have a variety of meanings: they can mean “I am hungry”, “I am angry”, or “Good to see you!” An elephant’s body language includes ear signals and gestures. If an elephant spreads its ears, it means “Watch out!” To show friendship, elephants will touch each other with their trunks and stand close to each other, putting their heads together. A pen. 【答案】 52—55 CBAB 【解析】本文主要介绍了研究表明,善良会产生意想不到的积极影响。 52.细节理解题。根据“both the performer and receiver had to rate (评分) how ‘big’ the act seemed”可知接受者都必须对善意行为的程度进行评分。故选C。 53.主旨大意题。根据“At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people...the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected.”可知本段主要介绍了一些证明研究结果的更多证据。故选B。 54.推理判断题。根据“why not choose kindness when we can?”可知作者建议我们要选择善良,所以作者对于对别人友善的行为是支持的。故选A。 55.主旨大意题。本文主要介绍了研究表明,善良会产生意想不到的积极影响。故选B。 D To learn to think is to learn to question. 【答案】 56—59 BCBD 【解析】本文主要讲述了学会思考就是学会质疑,不质疑就不会真正地思考。 56.推理判断题。根据第一段“Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought.”可知第一段以亚里上多德为例,就是为了说明这个观点(伟大思想家的巨大影响可能会阻碍人类思想的发展),故选B。 57.推理判断题。根据第二段“He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!”可知在他去世后,人们依然没有纠正错误,可推知句子中的状语从句表明了结果,故选C。 58.篇章结构题。根据第一段“To learn to think is to learn to question.
