As a writer myself, writing poetry has always served as my catharsis (情感宣泄法). This drove me immediately to ward poetry therapy (治疗) when I was offered the opportunity to develop a 12-week group project at my first-year placement. It was to help adults with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities. I wanted to share the therapeutic catharsis I have always found in writing with these adults, helping them find and develop their inner voice.
The group, named Pathway to Poetry, was rooted in poetry therapy and reading therapy, as well as built upon a cognitive behavioral framework. Along the way, clients also learned poetic forms and rhetorical devices, such as haiku and metaphor.
The clients in my group all already knew each other: many had known each other for several years. As a result, these clients didn’t need to jump through all the hoops of usual group development to share and write about vulnerable (敏感的) topics. I think I was lucky enough to experience group dynamics and social inclusion in this way.
As the group progressed, the writing became deeper on other levels. I provided members with a homework assignment in which they were to complete an “erasure” poem. It’s a poem that takes an already established piece of writing and erases unnecessary words to create a new poem. For this particular assignment, I provided members with a selection from A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. All clients did beautifully with this assignment, even those who often complained of the difficulty they had with writing and forming words and ideas.
In the last week, I asked members for feedback about the group. Members threw many praises out there, but what echoed most throughout the group was having a voice and having a comfortable space to talk about important issues such as emotions, family, relationships, love, grief/loss, and mental health. What they least liked was having homework assignments.
By far, the most common question I received from other fellow professionals was: How did clients receive the poetry as a whole? The answer was and is: with open arms.
4. What did the author want to do for the Pathway to Poetry members?
A. Help them express themselves. B. Improve their reading skills.
C. Offer them job opportunities. D. Teach them to write poems.
5. Which best explains “jump through all the hoops” underlined in paragraph3?
A. Take different steps. B. Face complete surprises.
C. Meet every expectation. D. Undergo various challenges.
6. How did the members respond to the “erasure” poem assignment?
A. They all complained about it. B. They all successfully finished it.
C. Some created great original poems. D. Some misunderstood its requirements.
7. How did the members feel about Pathway to Poetry according to paragraph 5?
A. It provided a safe space. B. It pushed them academically.
C. It involved too much homework. D. It created a competitive environment.
C
In a New York classroom, noise levels were so high that the teacher had to shout to be heard. The classroom was located near a subway train on raised tracks which passed by Public School 98 in Manhattan about 15 times a day, causing constant interruptions in the learning process.
In 1975, environmental psychologist Arline Bronzaft conducted a study on these students. She found that students who sat on the noisy side of the school building near the tracks performed poorly on reading tests compared to those on the quiet side of the building. The average reading scores of the classes on the noisy side lagged (落后) three to four months behind those of students on the quieter side. Based on Bronzaft’s findings, the Transit Authority placed rubber pads (橡胶垫) on the tracks to reduce noise, and the Board of Education equipped classrooms with sound-absorbing materials.
Noise pollution is a growing global problem. As populations increase, so do the noise levels that form the urban soundscape. The United Nations (UN) has warned that urban noise pollution is becoming a global public health threat, which already leads to about 12,000 premature deaths each year in the European Union, and affects an estimated 100 million Americans.
Research suggests that noise pollution from increasing traffic can hurt children’s health and development. In response to this, Barcelona is placing schools into so-called “superblocks”, which are small neighborhoods packed with traffic-calmed green spaces where people can exercise or get together. They have been shown to reduce noise and air pollution in residential neighborhoods in Barcelona. Cities around the world are following in Barcelona’s footsteps, including Buenos Aires, Vienna, Los Angeles and Bogota.
Quieter schools and neighborhoods could potentially have another benefit. Natasha Kirkham, a professor in developmental psychology, points out that noise not only affects how children learn — it may also affect how they feel. A study by Kirkham found that teenagers from noisier homes, who spent time in noisier classrooms, generally found noise more annoying. “It’s not just that noise is distracting. There is an emotional component. Children get angry,” she says.
8. What change did Arline Bronzaft’s study bring about?
A. Better teaching facilities. B. An improved learning environment.
C. Stronger student performance. D. A healthier teacher-student relationship.
9. What does the data in paragraph 3 indicate?
A. The UN’s public influence. B. The widespread concern about noise.
C. The serious harm of noise pollution. D. The direct effects of urban development.
10. What can be learned about “superblocks” in Barcelona?
A. They adopt green technology. B. They promote smaller vehicles.
C. They set a good example. D. They attract many tourists.
11 What is the “benefit” discussed in the last paragraph?
A. Happier children. B. Deeper sleep. C. Smoother traffic. D. Safer neighborhoods.
D
With cities growing faster than ever, more and more neglected (被忽视的) urban spaces are cropping up all around the world. Dealing with the increase in these neglected spaces poses a serious problem for virtually every major city, but could art be the answer to this urban problem?
Valero Square, centrally located in Jerusalem’s downtown near a busy light rail station and a major open-air market, should have been a lively community area. Instead, it fell into neglect due to a lack of people-focused programming, becoming a wasted space that thousands passed by daily without a second thought. That was, until the introduction of the Warde installation, which is part of a greater plan to revitalise the neglected urban spaces in Jerusalem’s city centre.
The installation features giant red “flowers” which can open and close in reaction to passers-by. Standing under one of the flowers will cause it to open and stay open until you leave, providing shade (阴凉) and relief from the hot summer sun. At night-time, it functions as lighting, providing a spotlight while open and a warm, soft light while closed. The installation is also programmed to react to public transportation, springing to life as the light rail vehicles arrive and leave the square, warming travellers not to miss their ride.
Art installations can be powerful in changing the attitudes and behavior of people in cities. In the case of Valero Square, the installation has invited people not only to engage with it actively but to notice a previously neglected site. However this type of interactive installation is not free from problems. Over time, the novelty can wear off and the behavior of passers-by can return to normal.
While It’s too early to say if Valero Square has been revived. Warde is an excellent example of how urban art installations can be a great tool for engaging communities with neglected spaces and getting people to stop and take notice of their surroundings.
12. Why was Valero Square neglected?
A. The absence of bright lighting. B. A lack of public transportation.
C. The insufficiency of large street markets. D. A shortage of community-engaged initiatives.
13. Which of the following is a function of Warde?
A. Protecting people from sunlight. B. Hosting live programmes.
C. Offering colorful lighting. D. Providing news report.
14. What is the problem of interactive installations like Warde?
A. Criticism from citizens. B. Loss of interest over time.
C. Damage from severe weather. D. Risk of high maintenance costs.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the impact of Warde?
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Uncertain. D. Positive.

The school had organized a volunteer activity to lend a hand at a local nursing home, aiming to bring some warmth and joy to the elderly residents. A group of Grade One students signed up for this meaningful event. Among them were Lucy and her classmate, David. Both of them were excited about the chance to contribute to the community and make a difference in the lives of others.
On the day of the activity they arrived at the nursing home bright and early in the morning. The elderly residents greeted them with warm smiles and kind eyes. Lucy and David were assigned to take care of an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Brown. The couple welcomed them into their cozy room, and they spent the whole morning engaged in lively conversations. Mr. Brown, in particular, was extremely talkative. He shared numerous interesting anecdotes (轶事) from his youth, like the time he participated in a thrilling sports event in his hometown and the unforgettable adventures he had while traveling. Lucy and David listened attentively, captivated by his stories.
After a delicious lunch prepared by the nursing home staff, the volunteers decided to organize a small but heartwarming performance for the residents. Lucy planned to sing some classic old-fashioned songs. David, who was good at playing the guitar, would accompany her. The other volunteers also got creative and prepared various performances, such as astonishing magic tricks and humorous short plays.
As they were busy setting up the small stage in the common area of the nursing home, they noticed that Mr. Brown seemed a bit down. His usually bright eyes were dimmed (暗淡), and he was sitting quietly in a corner. Concerned, Lucy and David walked over to him. Mr. Brown then revealed that he used to be a famous singer in his prime. He had performed on many stages, attracting audiences with his powerful voice. But now, due to his age and health issues, his voice had weakened, and he could no longer sing as well as he used to. Lucy and David felt a pang of sadness for him. They were determined to do something to lift his spirits.

C Meet every expectation.

11. What is the “benefit” discussed in the last paragraph?
A. Happier children. B. Deeper sleep. C. Smoother traffic. D. Safer neighborhoods.

A Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Uncertain. D. Positive.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. D

On the day of the activity, they arrived at the nursing home bright and early in the morning.

【答案】
Lucy decided to take the initiative and proposed a special plan for Mr. Brown. She suggested he could lead the opening song of their performance. Mr. Brown was shocked and refused at first, fearing he’d let everyone down. But Lucy and David persisted, assuring him that his past experience and emotions were more important. Eventually, Mr. Brown agreed. They started practicing the song together. As they sang, Mr. Brown’s eyes gradually regained their sparkle. Memories of his past performances flooded back, and his confidence slowly returned. The closer the performance time got, the more excited he became.
When the moment of the performance arrived, Mr. Brown stepped onto the stage with a combination of nerves and excitement. Lucy and David gave him an encouraging nod. David started playing the guitar, and Mr. Brown began to sing. His voice was initially shaky, but as the song progressed, it grew stronger. The residents watched in admiration. When the song ended, the audience erupted into applause. Mr. Brown’s face lit up with joy. After the show, he hugged Lucy and David, expressing his gratitude. Lucy and David realized that this volunteer work had taught them the value of empathy and the simple power of making others happy.
