For the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition, the Musée d’Orsay, which houses the world’s largest collection of this current, is offering a major retrospective (回顾展) of this artistic trend with Paris 1874: Inventing Impressionism from March 26 to July 14.
150 years ago, on April 15, 1874, in a luxurious photographer Nadar’s studio in northern Paris, Berthe Morisot, Edouard Degas and Claude Monet came together as a cooperative limited company to open the first Impressionist exhibition, a movement that would forever change the course of art history.

I joined the coast guard because I wanted to help people. Hovercraft (气垫船) are rare and special. They’ve been discontinued in most commercial operation, because they are so expensive to make, but when it comes to search and rescue, they’re priceless.
From far away, a hovercraft looks like a normal boat. But if you look under its skirt, the craft is not touching the water — it floats on a cushion of air. That cushion allows us to travel over everything from water to muddy land — and even break through ice. We do all of that as a 70-tonne machine, going a maximum of nearly 120 kilometers per hour. These features allow us to rescue a large number of people quickly get onto land, and get someone into an ambulance far easier than with any other device I can think of.
The advantages of hovercraft can also make them difficult to handle. We’ve got a massive vehicle moving fast, sometimes in a thick fog bank up a narrow river. During assignments on other coast guard ships, I had 20 minutes to make alterations to avoid a crash. In a hovercraft, I have 10 seconds. You have to have enough situational awareness to make the right decision every time.
People call us for all sorts of problems: missing divers, on-board fires, or even when they’ve run out of fuel or had a mechanical breakdown. A container ship could burst into flames. We have a strong network here at the base to help everyone through difficult situations like that. Thankfully, we have captains who train us in a safe environment, but you don’t ever get fully comfortable. Anything can throw the hovercraft off — maybe your lift settings are off a little, or the wind blows with a bit of extra weight. After several years operating a hovercraft, I’m still learning. Every one of the captains here agrees: you can drive this thing for 20 years and still be surprised.
4. What makes hovercraft unsuitable for commercial use?
A. Their safety risks. B. Their poor durability. C. Their low efficiency. D. Their production costs.
5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How a hovercraft works. B. What comprises a hovercraft.
C. What distinguishes a hovercraft. D. How a hovercraft helps victims.
6. What challenge do hovercraft pose to the pilot?
A. They have to make faster responses.
B. They often face mechanical breakdowns.
C. They need more people for decision making.
D. They must consider the environmental concerns.
7. What does the author think of operating a hovercraft?
A. Dull. B. Demanding. C. Enjoyable. D. Effortless.
C
Initial conversations can have a huge impact on how relationships develop over time. People are often stuck in the impressions they think they might have made the minute they finish speaking with someone for the first time: “Did they like me or were they just being polite?” “Were they deep in thought or deeply bored?”
To find out whether these worries are necessary, we have conducted nearly 10 years of research. In our studies, participants in the UK talked with someone they had never met before. Afterward, they were asked how much they liked their conversation partner and how much they believed that their conversation partner liked them. This allowed us to compare how much people believed they were liked to how much they were actually liked.
Time and time again, we found that people left their conversations with negative feelings about the impression they made. That is, people systematically underestimate how much their conversation partners like them and enjoy their company — a false belief we call the “liking gap”.
This bias (偏见) may seem like something that would occur only in initial interactions, but its effects extend far beyond a first impression. Surprisingly, the liking gap can constantly affect a variety of relationships, including interactions with coworkers, long after the initial conversations have taken place. Having a larger liking gap is associated with being less willing to ask workmates for help, less willing to provide workmates with open and honest feedback, and less willing to work on another project together.
There are numerous strategies to minimize your biased feelings. One place to start is shifting your focus of attention. Try to direct your attention to your conversation partner, be genuinely curious about them, ask them more questions, and really listen to their answers. The more you’re zeroed in on the other person, and the less you’re focused on yourself, the better your conversation will be and the less your mind will turn to all the things you think you didn’t do well.
8. Why did the author carry out 10 years of research?
A. To dismiss national concerns. B. To check out a potential bias.
C. To enhance human communication. D. To develop harmonious relationships.
9. What is one effect of people’s liking gap?
A. Fewer chances of new projects. B. Underestimation of their ability.
C. Bad relationships with people around. D. Low willingness to interact with others.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Restate opinions. B. Deliver warnings. C. Give suggestions. D. Make a summary.
11. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. Liking Gap May Influence Work Performances
B. First Impressions Rely On Initial Conversations
C. People Probably Like You More Than You Think
D. How People Like You Matters Less Than You Assume
D
If you live on this planet, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen the classic Star TrekEpisode, in which captain Kirk and several members find themselves in what appears to be another universe.
These days, it seems the idea of the multiverse—many worlds—is having its Hollywood moment. Its appeal as a storytelling device is obvious—characters explore a multi-world with varying degrees of similarity to our own, as well as different versions of themselves. Hence, it has been fully established in mainstream pop culture.
While Hollywood can’t seem to get enough of the multiverse, it remains deeply controversial (有争议的) among scientists. Advocates on the two sides show no mercy toward each other in their books, on their blogs. But physicists didn’t pull the idea out of thin air—rather, several distinct lines of reasoning seem to point to the multiverse’s existence. However, critics warn that making the multiverse legal could make it harder for the public to distinguish speculative (推测性的) theories from established fact, making it more difficult to keep pseudo-science (伪科学) at bay. Giving credit to such speculation risks “turning fundamental physics into pseudo-science”.
The multiverse controversy is rooted in the idea of test ability. If we can’t interact with these other universes, or detect them in any way, some experts insist that reduces them to mere philosophical speculation. But Carroll, an advocate for “many worlds”, argues that mathematics is the language describing our physical theories. Since Schrdinger’s equation (方程), on which Quanturr (量子) mechanic rests, predicts the existence of many worlds, so be it.
Could a more expansive view of the universe itself be the next breakthrough? As Siegfried puts it: “Every time in the past that we’ve thought, ‘We’ve got it; this is what the whole universe is’—the people who’ve said, ‘Maybe there’s more than one of those’ have always turned out to be right.”
12. Why is Hollywood so occupied with the multiverse?
A It makes for engaging plots.
B. It is a much-talked-about topic.
C. It is helpful to popularize science.
D. It dominates the mainstream pop culture.
13. What do the underlined words in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Out of date. B. Out of place. C. Out of nowhere. D. Out of question.
14. According to the opponents, the basic standard of fundamental physics is that ______.
A. it can be detected somehow
B. it can be reasoned logically
C. it can be interpreted philosophically
D. it can be predicted by mathematics equation
15. What might be the author’s attitude toward the multiverse?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Approving.

A. Dull. B. Demanding. C. Enjoyable. D. Effortless.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B
由文章第一段“They’ve been discontinued in most commercial operation, because they are so expensive to make, but when it comes to search and rescue, they’re priceless.(它们在大多数商业运营中都已停产,因为它们的制造成本太高,但在搜救方面,它们是无价的。)”
由文章第二段“From far away, a hovercraft looks like a normal boat. But if you look under its skirt, the craft is not touching the water — it floats on a cushion of air. That cushion allows us to travel over everything from water to muddy land — and even break through ice. We do all of that as a 70-tonne machine, going a maximum of nearly 120 kilometers per hour.(从远处看,气垫船就像一艘普通的船。但如果你从它的裙子下面看,这艘船并没有碰到水——它漂浮在气垫上。这种缓冲垫可以让我们穿越从水到泥泞的土地的一切,甚至可以破冰。我们完成所有这些工作正如一台70吨重的机器那样,最高时速接近120公里。)”以及后文可知,本段主要介绍气垫船的与众不同之处。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第三段“During assignments on other coast guard ships, I had 20 minutes to make alterations to avoid a crash. In a hovercraft, I have 10 seconds. You have to have enough situational awareness to make the right decision every time.(在其它海岸警卫队船只上执行任务时,我有20分钟的时间进行改变航线,以避免发生撞击事故。在气垫船上,我有10秒的时间。你必须有足够的情境意识,才能每次都做出正确的决定。)”可知,气垫船驾驶员必须做出更快的反应。故选A项。
由文章最后一段“Anything can throw the hovercraft off — maybe your lift settings are off a little, or the wind blows with a bit of extra weight. After several years operating a hovercraft, I’m still learning. Every one of the captains here agrees: you can drive this thing for 20 years and still be surprised.(任何事情都可能使气垫船偏离——也许你的升力设置有点偏离,或者风吹得有点重。在操作气垫船几年后,我仍在学习。这里的每一位队长都同意:你可以驾驶这辆车20年,但仍然会感到惊讶。)”可知,作者认为操作气垫船是要求很高的。故选B项。
B 9. D 10. C 11. C
根据第一段“Initial conversations can have a huge impact on how relationships develop over time. People are often stuck in the impressions they think they might have made the minute they finish speaking with someone for the first time: “Did they like me or were they just being polite?” “Were they deep in thought or deeply bored?”(最初的对话会对关系的发展产生巨大的影响。人们常常会陷入自己第一次和别人说话时留下的印象中:“他们是喜欢我还是只是出于礼貌?”“他们是在沉思还是很无聊?”)”以及第二段“To find out whether these worries are necessary, we have conducted nearly 10 years of research.(为了弄清楚这些担忧是否有必要,我们进行了近10年的研究)”可知,作者进行10年的研究是为了找出潜在的偏见。
根据倒数第二段“Having a larger liking gap is associated with being less willing to ask workmates for help, less willing to provide workmates with open and honest feedback, and less willing to work on another project together.(好感认知差距越大,就越不愿意向同事寻求帮助,越不愿意向同事提供公开和诚实的反馈,越不愿意一起完成另一个项目)”可知,好感认知差距的一个影响是与他人互动的意愿低。
根据最后一段“There are numerous strategies to minimize your biased feelings. One place to start is shifting your focus of attention. Try to direct your attention to your conversation partner, be genuinely curious about them, ask them more questions, and really listen to their answers. The more you’re zeroed in on the other person, and the less you’re focused on yourself, the better your conversation will be and the less your mind will turn to all the things you think you didn’t do well.(有很多策略可以减少你的偏见。可以从转移你的注意力开始。试着把你的注意力转移到你的谈话对象身上,真诚地对他们感到好奇,问他们更多的问题,并认真倾听他们的回答。你越关注对方,越少关注自己,你们的对话就会越好,你也就越不会去想那些你认为自己做得不好的事情)”可知,作者在最后一段想给出建议。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Time and time again, we found that people left their conversations with negative feelings about the impression they made. That is, people systematically underestimate how much their conversation partners like them and enjoy their company — a false belief we call the “liking gap”.(我们一次又一次地发现,人们在结束谈话时对自己留下的印象感到消极。也就是说,人们系统性地低估了交谈对象对自己的喜爱程度和对陪伴的享受程度——这种错误的信念我们称之为“好感认知差距”)”结合文章主要说明了什么是“好感认知差距”以及这种心态对人们社交关系的影响。可知,C选项“人们可能比你想象的更喜欢你”最符合文章标题。故选C。
A. It makes for engaging plots.
B. It is a much-talked-about topic.
C. It is helpful to popularize science.
D. It dominates the mainstream pop culture.
13. What do the underlined words in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Out of date. B. Out of place. C. Out of nowhere. D. Out of question.
14. According to the opponents, the basic standard of fundamental physics is that ______.
A. it can be detected somehow
B. it can be reasoned logically
C. it can be interpreted philosophically
D. it can be predicted by mathematics equation
15. What might be the author’s attitude toward the multiverse?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Approving.
A 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中的“Its appeal as a storytelling device is obvious—characters explore a multi-world with varying degrees of similarity to our own, as well as different versions of themselves.(作为一种讲故事的手段,它的吸引力显而易见——角色探索了一个与我们自己不同程度相似的多元世界,以及不同版本的自己。)” 故选A。
out of thin air意为“凭空,无中生有地”,和out of nowhere(突然出现)意思相近。
根据第三段中的“However, critics warn that making the multiverse legal could make it harder for the public to distinguish speculative(推测性的) theories from established fact, making it more difficult to keep pseudo-science(伪科学) at bay. Giving credit to such speculation risks ‘turning fundamental physics into pseudo-science’.(然而,批评者警告说,使多元宇宙合法化可能会使公众更难区分推测性理论和既定事实,从而更难遏制伪科学。相信这种推测有可能‘把基础物理学变成伪科学’。)”可知,批评者认为让多元宇宙合法化可能会使公众难以区分推测性理论和既定事实,相信这种推测有可能导致基础物理学变成伪科学。由此可推测出,基础物理学是以既定事实为基础的,可以通过某种方式发现。故选A。
根据第四段中的“Since Schrdinger’s equation (方程), on which Quanturr (量子) mechanic rests, predicts the existence of many worlds, so be it.(既然量子力学所依据的薛定谔方程预测了许多世界的存在,那就顺其自然吧。)”和最后一段中的“Could a more expansive view of the universe itself be the next breakthrough? As Siegfried puts it: “Every time in the past that we’ve thought, ‘We’ve got it; this is what the whole universe is’—the people who’ve said, ‘Maybe there’s more than one of those’ have always turned out to be right.”(正如齐格弗里德所说:“在过去,每当我们想,‘我们明白了;这就是整个宇宙的样子’——那些说‘也许不止一个’的人总是被证明是对的。”)”
