In a small village, a very sick girl, Maggie, was found by the roadside. The villagers felt pity for the poor child.
“Take her to the poorhouse,” a villager suggested.
“The poorhouse is a sad place for a sick and helpless child,” answered another.
They discussed for a while but still no one seemed willing to take her.
Finally, Joe Thompson, a kind man, couldn’t leave Maggie behind. He carried her home gently.
As he got home, Jane, his childless, ill-tempered (易怒的) wife, angrily questioned, “What did you bring her here for?”
“She is too weak to walk,” replied Joe. “I will carry her to the poorhouse tomorrow and the guardians (管理人) there must be seen first.”
“Why not get the whole thing off your hands tonight?”
“Keep this poor child for a single night, please,” begged Joe, voice shaking, tears hidden. Jane didn’t answer, but a soft feeling rose in her heart.
“Treat her nicely,” said Joe. “Think of the loneliness, pain and sadness in her coming life.” Jane went quietly into the room where Maggie was in. Joe didn’t follow. He noticed that Jane’s attitude (态度) had changed. She sat by Maggie’s bed, talking kindly to her. Maggie’s eyes were fixed upon Jane. The little girl’s expression was sad yet thankful.
“What are you going to do with Maggie?” Jane asked after supper.
“You knew she was to go to the poorhouse,” replied Joe.
Jane looked strangely at Joe and her eyes dropped.
Early the next morning, Jane said to Joe, “Let’s keep her a day or two longer. She is so weak and helpless.”
Actually, Joe never saw the guardians at all. For within a week, Jane was so kind to Maggie that she would rather live in the poorhouse herself than send Maggie there. At the same time, Maggie brought happiness to their lives in return. Their home was filled with laughter and love.

My friend Julie and I are keen on creating a beautiful green town.
Gardening Course
Every September, our city has a special festival. Crowds of happy people go to the park. That’s because the gardening competition takes place there.
For Julie and me, it was a pity that we couldn’t take part in the competition, for that was also the first day of our high school. We buried ourselves in choosing courses. We wanted to learn all about plants, gardening and farming. Finally, a course called Agriculture and Wildlife came into our sight. We thought it would help us succeed as gardeners.
Project presentation
After a year’s study, I decided to give a presentation to my class about my project—the green farm.
“Good morning!” I said, “During my studies, I’ve learned a lot about city farming. Now, I want to do something with what I’ve learned.”
I showed them a small plastic model. “This is the high street of our town. This is an old, nine-floor car park. No one has used it for the last two years and it’s now for sale.”
“I’ve designed a city farm using the car park building. There will be eight floors to farm fruit and vegetables. This design can help us collect rainwater to wet the soil. And we can also use energy from the sun to power the special growing lights.”
“I will hire the space out to local people and they will sell everything good enough for the environment in local shops. Also, the ninth floor will be for those who want to grow their own plants.”
My audience looked interested and my project got the highest marks in my class.
___▲___
Later, Julie helped me search the town for the perfect place for gardening—somewhere that was not the best neighbourhood, but a poor one. One where the road was full of holes and the pavement (人行道) was all broken came into our eyes. At last, we made it.
In the neighbourhood, we posted letters through people’s doors with gardening instructions. More and more people cared about that and began to plant vegetable gardens.
Then in the same neighbourhood, we put grass over those broken old pavements for the kids to play on. Finally, we put up a sign that said, “Have fun here.”
When we finished, we were both covered in soil and completely exhausted. But Julie put an arm around my shoulders and smiled. “Not bad!” she said. “We can do more to make our town greener!”
23. The writer mentioned the gardening competition to ________.
A. change her gardening projects B. express her interest in gardening
C. discuss ways to get good prizes D. tell stories of gardening courses
24. Which is the most suitable for ___▲___?
A. Grass Houses B. Farming Instructions

China has become the world’s largest producer and market of EVs (电车). According to a report, 12.89million Chinese-made EVs were produced and 12.87 million were sold in 2024. Among the total sales, 1.3million EVs were exported (出口).
The Chinese government has been encouraging EVs as part of its effort for green, high-quality development. As a result, China’s EV industry develops very quickly. At Auto (汽车) China 2004, BYD was the only company showing EVs there. At Auto China 2024, there were 278’ different EV models on show, including BYD, SAIC, Geely, Li Auto, Nio, Xpeng and other brands.
China’s EV industry is now facing both challenges and chances. It’s reported that 71% of EV brands cut prices in 2024. EV makers without the ability of innovation (创新) will face growing risks. In order to be both green and smart, Chinese EV makers are trying hard to improve technologies like battery qualities and AI support. At the same time, the government is adding even more charging points (充电站). On the other hand, more Chinese people are aware of the environmental problems. It is encouraging more buyers to choose EVs.
EVs are the way of the future. In an ideal world, everyone benefits from innovation and green transport. Some might get there sooner than others, and will gain greater rewards. It is very likely that China will hold the lead.
27. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To introduce different EV brands in China.
B. To give some information about Auto China.

D. To advise people to buy Chinese-made EVs.
28. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future of China’s EV industry?
A. Uncertain. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
29. What can we learn about China’s EV industry from the passage?
A. Only BYD showed EVs at Auto China 2024.
B. The Chinese government doesn’t support the development of EVs.
C. All EV brands cut prices in 2024.
D. China’s EV industry develops fast.
30. What are Chinese EV makers doing to face the challenges?
A. They are stopping producing EVs.
B. They are only improving battery qualities.
C. They are trying to improve technologies like battery qualities and AI support.
D. They are cutting down the number of charging points.

Dear Mr. Wang,
How are you? I am very glad to share my ideas about the break-time activities. During breaktime, I usually just sit at my desk and chat with my classmates briefly. If we have a 15-minute breaktime next month, I' d really love the activity of taking a short walk around the schoolyard.
Firstly, sitting in the classroom for a long time makes me feel stiff. A short walk can relax
my body and refresh my mind, helping me be more focused in the following classes. Secondly, the schoolyard is full of green plants. Walking around allows me to enjoy the beautiful scenery and breathe in fresh air, which is beneficial to my health.
I hope my suggestions can be considered.
Yours,
Li Hua

19. What did Jane mean by saying the underlined sentence?
A. She couldn’t wait to send little Maggie away.
B. She was angry that Joe didn’t finish his work.
C. She couldn’t believe Joe did nothing at home.
D. She was mad that Joe took useless things home.
20. Which picture shows the change of Jane’s attitude towards Maggie?

A. She would work hard in a poorhouse.
B. She would see the guardians at times.
C. She would live happily with her new family.
D. She would have a hard time at the Thompsons’.
22. What would be the best title for the story?
A. Maggie’s Suffering B. The Strength of Love
C. The Regret of Joe Thompson D. The Power of Happiness

根据第八段“Why not get the whole thing off your hands tonight?” 故选A。

Their home was filled with laughter and love.”

C. Vegetable Gardens D. Gardening Experiences
25. Which of the following is the correct order of the story?
a.Julie helped find a perfect place for gardening.
b.The writer explained the green farm project.
c.Julie and the writer posted letters to neighbours.
d.Julie and the writer were busy choosing the courses.
e.Old pavements were covered with grass for kids to play on.
A. d-b-a-c-e B. d-a-b-e-c C. a-b-c-e-d D. a-d-b-c-e
26. According to the underlined sentence in the last paragraph, Julie and the writer may ________.
A. hire out their green farms for parking and camping
B. find more open spaces to plant grass and vegetables
C. sell their grass and vegetables to the neighbourhood
D. put up more signs to ask kids to have fun on the grass
B 24. D 25. A 26. B
根据文章第二段“Every September, our city has a special festival.. That's because the gardening competition takes place there."以及“For Julie and me, it was a pity that we couldn't takepart in the competition... We wanted to learn all about plants, gardening and farming."可知,作者提到园艺比赛是为了表达她对园艺的兴趣,因为她和Julie因为比赛当天是她们高中开学的第一天而不能参加比赛感到遗憾,从而引出她们想要学习园艺的愿望。故选B。
24. 推理判断题。根据下文"Later, Julie helped me search the town for the perfect place for gardening.""In the neighbourhood, we posted letters through people's doors with gardening instructions...""When we finished, we were both covered in soil and completely exhausted.”可知,下文讲述了作者和Julie在园艺方面的经历,包括寻找合适的园艺地点、给邻居们发送园艺指导信件、在社区进行园艺实践等。因此,最合适的标题是“Gardening Experiences”(园艺经历)。故选D。
25. 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“We buried ourselves in choosing courses."可知,d选项“Julie和作者忙着选课”是故事的第一步;根据文章第四段"After a year' s study, I decided to give a presentation to my class about my project-the green farm.” Later, Julie helped me search the town for the perfect place for gardening"可知,a选项“Julie帮忙找到了一个完美的园艺地点”是故事的第三步;根据文章第八段“In the neighbourhood, we posted letters through people's doors with gardening
instructions."可知,c选项“Julie和作者给邻居们寄信”是故事的第四步;根据文章第九段"Then in the same neighbourhood, we put grass over those broken old pavements for the kids to play on.”
根据文章最后一段“Not bad!" she said."We can do more to make our town greener!”
D

Dear Mr. Wang,
How are you?
Yours,
Li Hua
