Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright (清明) is the only one whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The words “clear” and “bright” describe the weather during this period. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors, however, here are several things you may not know about Clear and Bright.
Spring Outings
Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers blossom, and the sun shines brightly, everything returns to life. It is a fine time to appreciate the beauty of nature.
Flying Kites
Flying kites is an activity favored by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that this brings good luck and that diseases can be chased away by doing this.
Cuju
Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. Ju is a ball made of leather with hairs plugged in it. Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor first invented it for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival.
Feasting on Qingtuan
In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make the cakes, people mash (捣碎) barnyard grass (艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them. Pretty and delicate, qingtuan has a special flavor.

Had she been a singer, she might have been an American star. But Clora Bryant played the trumpet, and reputation came slowly. Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her, died on August 25, 2019, in Los Angeles, when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill battle, said her son Darrin. “It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.”
Bryant played the trumpet with such passion and she became a mainstay in the growing jazz scene in the 1940s. Dizzy Gillespie once told Times jazz critic Leonard Feather that Bryant was the most underrated (低估) trumpet player in L. A.
But by 1992 she was living on Social Security, staying at a son’s Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当铺). “A lot of clubs have closed.” she told the Times. “And how many female trumpet players do you see working?”
Bryant and her brothers were raised by their father, a patient man who encouraged his children to think big. She wanted to be in the high school marching band, but Charles Bryant warned his daughter she’d likely face resistance. “But anything you want to do, I’m behind you,” she recalled. It was her father who encouraged her to do whatever she wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger.
4. What does the underlined word “resolved” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

C. To explain how Bryant made a living. D. To stress the importance of the pawnshop.
6 What may be the key reason for Bryant’s being underrated?
A. The terrible financial situation. B. The poor family background.
C. The discouragement from family. D. The open sexism from society.
7. What played an important role for Bryant to stick to her dream?
A. Her son’s support. B. Her brothers’ company.
C. Her father’s encouragement. D. Her strict family education.
C
If you’ve dealt with stiffness and pain in the recent past, you may have come across fascia (筋膜) training — an approach that many in the fitness field are encouraging people to do so. That means working to improve the health of your fascia, a web of connective tissue (组织) that holds the body’s organs, muscles, bones and tissues in place. Stretching from head to toe, the fascial network also gives the body its shape.
This flexible web of tissue also plays an important role in proprioceptionn — the body’s ability to sense movement, action and location — and thus helps with coordination (协调). That’s because the fascial network is richly supplied, containing some 250 million nerve endings, according to Dr Robert Schleip, a pioneer in fascial research.
Give your fascial system a little TLC (tender loving care), and you’ll be healthier, have less pain and move more easily. You may even improve your athletic performance. If you ignore your fascia, though, you may develop a large quantity of problems.
Fascia can shorten, tighten and develop adhesions (粘连) from repeated movements like running or swinging a bat or ball. In fact, a majority of sports-related overuse injuries occur in the fascial network. Fascia can also become tight and painful from sitting at a desk all day or spending hours scrolling through your smartphone. A couch potato is the worst thing you can be.
“Working to loosen tight fascia is the basis for fascia training, and it can help most people,” said certified personal trainer Liz Barnet Simmons.
Perhaps the best-known method of fascia training is fascial release. This technique can relieve stiffness and adhesions, plus move and reduce swelling.
“Another way to assist your fascial health is through movements such as skipping and hopping, which help keep your body young and your body return quickly to its original shape by boosting its capacity of flexible moving back suddenly and quickly.” Schleip said.
8. Why is fascia training encouraged in the fitness field?
A. To relieve the body’s pain. B. To add the body’s flexibility.
C. To strengthen muscles. D. To work out more.
9. What does paragraph 2 tell us about the fascial network?
A. Its overuse injuries. B. Its operating rules.
C. Its complex construction. D. Its ability to coordinate.
10. Why does the author take the example of a couch potato in paragraph 4?
A. To prove the damage lack of exercise does to fascia.
B. To show the bad result from a repeated movement.
C. To show the benefits of fascia training.
D. To give the cause of health problems.
11. What does Schleip suggest to keep fascia healthy in the last paragraph?
A. Knowing the basis for fascia training. B. Doing some proper movements.
C. Grasping some useful techniques. D. Improving the body’s recovery.
D
Adaptations are the currency of the movie industry. It’s common to see that the latest hit movie or thrilling drama is inspired by a novel, video game, or perhaps even a comic book. The journey of the page being adapted to the screen has been covered a lot. But little is the process spoken about in reverse.
The most well-known version of a film making its way into the publishing industry is through the classic novelization. Movie novelizations went through a popular period before the Internet existed. Fans wanted to keep learning more about the fictional worlds they had stepped. into and needed to experience the story again in a new way. They couldn’t simply google it nor could they immediately get the production on tape. Therefore, the novelization was a great solution.
Novelizations were usually written by authors who were not in the movie-making process. Instead, they would receive the most complete version of the screenplay to hand and would begin to write their adaptation based on that document. Although changes could be made, there were times where a novelization didn’t actually reflect what happened on the screen because scenes could be cut or replaced and the novelizations were left outdated. But there’s also an advantage. The novelizations were a small piece of movie-making history in their own right. Massive films like Star Wars, ET, Back To The Future, and Alien all received their own page adaptation. It was a completely unique experience before the films were even available to watch. For a time, they were everything for cinema lovers.
Regardless of the influences on the tales, movie adaptations provide a creative outlet for new concepts to be developed. That’s a wonderful idea. which should be encouraged for those movies that never got a chance to continue on their path.
12. What does the underlined phrase “in reverse” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Equally. B. Oppositely. C. Similarly. D. Completely.
13. Why were movie novelizations popular before the Internet existed?
A. They took the place of productions on tape.
B. They were adapted from up-to-date novels.
C They satisfied fans’ curiosity in a different way.
D. They created a fictional world for people to first step in.
14. What is probably the disadvantage of a novelization?
A. Its choosing the wrong story.
B. Its missing the point of the screenplay.
C. Its cutting and replacing movie scenes.
D. Its failing to match the original movie.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Novel-based Movies. B. Fast-developing Industries.
C. Film-to-book Adaptations. D. Well-known novelizations.

With just a boat, a paddle (桨) and a bit of water, you can experience fun and exercise in a kayak. Kayaking is a kind of paddling sport, and people often mistake it for canoeing (划独木舟), but there are some differences.
Kayakers sit on the floor of the boat while canoeists sit on a bench. Also, kayak paddles have a wide flat part on either end, but canoe paddles have them on only one end. Within kayaking, there are a few styles that need different levels of skill and fitness. Anyone can enjoy relaxing kayaking, most often paddling on a lake or perhaps a gentle river. Whitewater kayaking is much more exciting because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls. Surf kayakers must be both strong-willed and talented as they ride waves on the open ocean. The difficulty involved with kayaking is transportation — a boat several meters long is not exactly easy to carry around. However, a man who had to leave his kayak behind when moving to a smaller apartment borrowed the idea of Japanese paper folding, and made a new type of special kayak — it can be folded into a very thin pack, allowing the kayak to easily fit in a car. In this way, the problem was perfectly solved.
Kayaking can offer sightseeing opportunities and a good way to exercise certain parts of the body. Paddling is helpful for strengthening the upper body and it requires continuing turning of your main body, giving it some great exercise. Another advantage is that these movements are gentler on the body’s joints and tissues (关节和组织) than running. Kayaking doesn’t just improve the health of the body, though — it also has been shown to make you less stressed as well. With so many benefits, why not head to the closest water and give it a try?
56. Why is whitewater kayaking much more exciting?

57. How did the man solve the transportation problem?

But by 1992, she was living on Social Security, staying at a son’s Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当铺).

A. Her son’s support. B. Her brothers’ company.
C. Her father’s encouragement. D. Her strict family education.

根据第一段中“Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her (Bryant虽然一辈子都被公然的性别歧视所困扰,但她突破屏障,下定决心要成为一名备受尊敬的爵士小号手)”可知,Bryant虽然她一辈子都被公然的性别歧视所困扰,但她决心成为一名受尊敬的爵士小号手。结合划线词前“It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire (这是一个男人的世界,这让她很难过。但这只会点燃她的热情)”可知,性别歧视并未能阻挡Bryant成为一名爵士小号手,反而使她更加下定决心成为一名爵士小号手,所以可以推断出画线单词“resolved”意思是“下定决心的”,与“determined”意思一致。故选C项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But by 1992, she was living on Social Security, staying at a son’s Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当铺). (到了1992年,她却只能靠社会保险金生活,住在儿子位于加州长滩的公寓,两把小号都被送进了典当铺。)”可推知,作者提及“社会保险金”是为了证实她当时经济状况的窘迫,从侧面反应她成名过程中的奋斗与艰辛。故选A项。

This flexible web of tissue also plays an important role in proprioceptionn — the body’s ability to sense movement action and location — and thus helps with coordination (协调).
A 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据文章第一段“If you’ve dealt with stiffness and pain in the recent past, you may have come across fascia (筋膜) training — an approach that many in the fitness field are encouraging people to do so.(如果你最近处理过僵硬和疼痛问题,你可能已经遇到过筋膜训练——健身领域的许多人都鼓励人们这样做)”可知,健身领域鼓励筋膜训练是为了缓解身体的疼痛。故选A项。
根据文章第二段“This flexible web of tissue also plays an important role in proprioception — the body’s ability to sense movement, action and location—and thus helps with coordination (协调).(这个灵活组织网络在本体感觉——身体感知运动、动作和位置的能力——中也起着重要作用,因此有助于协调)”可知筋膜有助于协调身体感知运动、动作和位置的能力。
根据文章第四段“Fascia can also become tight and painful from sitting at a desk all day or spending hours scrolling through your smartphone. A couch potato is the worst thing you can be.(整天坐在办公桌前或花几个小时刷智能手机也会使筋膜变得紧绷和疼痛。做一个电视迷是最糟糕的事情)”可知整天坐在办公桌前或花几个小时刷智能手机也会使筋膜变得紧绷和疼痛,可推理出作者以“couch potato”为例是为了证明缺乏运动对筋膜的损害。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“Another way to assist your fascial health is through movements such as skipping and hopping, which help keep your body young and your body return quickly to its original shape by boosting its capacity of flexible moving back suddenly and quickly (另一种有助于筋膜健康的方法是通过跳绳和单脚跳等运动,这些运动有助于保持身体年轻,通过提高身体突然快速灵活恢复的能力,使身体迅速恢复到原来的形状)”可知,Schleip建议做一些适当的运动来保持筋膜健康。故选B项。

They couldn’t simply google it, nor could they immediately get the production on tape.
C. They satisfied fans’ curiosity in a different way.
D. They created a fictional world for people to first step in.
14. What is probably the disadvantage of a novelization?
A. Its choosing the wrong story.
B. Its missing the point of the screenplay.
C. Its cutting and replacing movie scenes.
D. Its failing to match the original movie.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Novel-based Movies. B. Fast-developing Industries.
C. Film-to-book Adaptations. D. Well-known novelizations.
B 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据前文“These two words can inspire both joy and fear in the hearts of students everywhere.(这两个字可以在各地的学生心中激起喜悦和恐惧)”可知,本段会分别说喜欢运动和恐惧运动的人,再根据后文“For others, it might feel like having to take part in something they aren’t good at.(对其他人来说,这可能就像不得不参加他们不擅长的事情一样)”可知,后文讲过恐惧运动的人,所以空处应是喜欢运动的人,所以C项“For many, sports day can be a great day of fun.(对许多人来说,运动会是很有趣的一天)”符合文意。故选C项。
由上文“They hope that by making sports days less competitive, children of all abilities will be encouraged to take part without fear of losing. Exercise and fitness is important for everyone, no matter how good at sport you are.(他们希望通过减少运动日的竞争性,激发所有能力的孩子参加运动,而不必担心失败。运动和健身对每个人来说都很重要,无论你在运动方面有多擅长)”可知,上文讲非竞争性运动让所有孩子不必担心失败,尽情地运动,这是它的益处,E选项“Everyone should be celebrated for trying and playing their part.(每个人都应该为自己的努力和发挥作用而庆祝)”承接上文讲非竞争性运动给孩子带来的益处。故选E项。
【18题详解】
由上文“However, some people feel that it’s important that sport has winners and that learning to lose is just as important as learning how to win.(然而,一些人认为运动有赢家很重要,学会输和学会如何赢一样重要)”和下文“Particularly, on a sports day which is your chance to really prove yourself!.(尤其是在运动日,这是你真正证明自己的机会! )”可知,上下文讲赢的重要性,A选项“What’s the point if no one wins?(如果没有人赢,那有什么意义?)” 故选A项。
分析设空可知,空处位于段首,起到引领全段的作用,是对本段的高度概括,所以根据后文“According to a 2017 survey by Families Online, 82% of parents say they prefer “traditional” competitive sports days. Many adults feel that children can learn valuable lessons in both winning and losing.(据家庭在线2017年的一项调查,82%的父母表示他们更喜欢“传统的”竞技体育日。许多成年人认为孩子可以从输赢中学到宝贵的经验)”可知,本段是在讲大部分人都同意上文提到的观点,特别是父母,所以F项“There are lots of people who agree with the idea—parents in particular!(有很多人同意这个想法,尤其是父母!)”
根据后文“We want to know your ideas.(我们想知道你的想法)”可推断,空处应是提了一个问题,此处才会说想知道你的想法,再根据前文“People have different ideas about whether it is the winning or the taking part that counts when it comes to school sports days.(当谈到学校运动会时,到底是获胜还是参与才是重要的,人们有不同的看法)”可知,本段主要是在讨论学校运动会,所以应该是针对学校运动会提问。所以D项“So, should School Sports Day be competitive or not?(那么,学校运动会是否应该是竞争性的呢?)”

________________________________________________________________________________
57. How did the man solve the transportation problem?
________________________________________________________________________________
58. Do you think kayaking will become popular in China? Why or why not? (Give at least 2 reasons)
________________________________________________________________________________
56. Because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls.
57. The man solved the transportation problem by borrowing the idea of Japanese paper folding and making a new type of special kayak that can be folded into a very thin pack, allowing it to easily fit in a car.
58. Yes, I think kayaking will become popular in China for the following reasons: Firstly, China has a vast territory with abundant water resources. Secondly, kayaking is also a good way to cultivate people’s perseverance and teamwork spirit, which is in line with the values pursued by modern society.
根据第二段“Whitewater kayaking is much more exciting because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls.(激流皮划艇更令人兴奋,因为船沿着湍急的河流航行,甚至越过小瀑布)”可知,激流皮划艇更刺激是因为船在湍急的河流上行驶,甚至在小瀑布上行驶。 Because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls.
根据第二段“However, a man who had to leave his kayak behind when moving to a smaller apartment borrowed the idea of Japanese paper folding, and made a new type of special kayak — it can be folded into a very thin pack, allowing the kayak to easily fit in a car.(然而,一名男子在搬到更小的公寓时不得不把皮艇留在家里,他借用了日本折纸的想法,制作了一种新型的特殊皮艇——它可以折叠成非常薄的包,这样皮艇就可以很容易地装进汽车里。)” The man solved the transportation problem by borrowing the idea of Japanese paper folding and making a new type of special kayak that can be folded into a very thin pack, allowing it to easily fit in a car.
Yes, I think kayaking will become popular in China for the following reasons: Firstly, China has a vast territory with abundant water resources. Secondly, kayaking is also a good way to cultivate people’s perseverance and teamwork spirit, which is in line with the values pursued by modern society.
