Do you want to have some tasty ice cream? Without using a fridge, you can try making it by yourself at home. It is much easier than you may think. Just "shake" your way to it!
What you will need : Two small plastic bags, ice cubes, one big plastic bag, a towel, salt, milk, sugar, cream.
Step by step
1. Put the cream, milk and sugar in one small plastic bag. Slowly seal the bag to let as much air out as possible.
2. Put this bag inside the second small bag. Seal it again. Using two bags can keep the mix from spilling on other things.
3. Put the two-bagged mix into the big plastic bag. Add the ice and salt to the big bag. Seal it well.
4. Hold the bag with a towel. Shake and rub the bag. Keep doing this for 5 to 8 minutes. Then open the bag and enjoy your ice cream!
Top tip
Salt makes the ice even cooler. So the milk mix is cold enough to freeze.
Science behind shaking
Milk contains fat, protein and water. If you put the mix in the freezer, the water separates and turns into large chunks of ice. This makes it hard to get creamy ice cream. But when you shake and rub milk, water can stay inside the milk and mix well with other things.

Having grown up in Arizona with the Grand Canyon and the red plateaus(高原)of Sedona in my backyard,I spent many younger days fishing and exploring the mysterious land. I believed this southwestern state is home to the most beautiful landscape on the earth. No foreign scenery could compare with its endless blue sky and great mountains.
I thought so until I was invited to visit a southwestern province in China. On my trip to Guizhou,I had the chance to go boating on Wanfeng Lake. At one point I rested, floating at the centre of the lake, listening to the spaces between silence and looking at the mountains around me. I thought about my childhood, and wished I had listened more closely to my father’s fishing stories.
During my trip around the city of Xingyi, in Guizhou, I saw the artworks of the Bouyei ethnic group(布依族). They use colours produced from plants to make clothes of bright blues and greens. Local elders still practise weaving(编织) with wooden machines and pass that tradition on to their grandchildren. The history here is easily noticed. One could reach out, touch it, and breathe it. It reminded me of my home. My mother loved to make our home more beautiful with paintings and some handmade artworks. The designs were ancient, and carried wisdom within them. This earth is our home, and we celebrate its wonders. I caught that same feeling while enjoying the artworks in Xingyi.
I’ve lived away from Arizona for 10 years, living a new life in China. I’ve successfully built myself a family and a career. I feel as though I have everything that I need. For a moment, in Guizhou, I felt at home.

How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel beter when you visit your local park? I believe the answer must be"YES".
Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains, However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada’s national parks is getting smaller every year. And in countries such as the US,only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.
Therefore, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example is the work of Dr Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a Maths test. During the test, their heart rates(心率 ) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实 )room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people’s in the other group. The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. The natural world allows our brains to rest and slow down, and can leave us feeling happier and less stressed. Another example from Canada also shows nature is good for health. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want people to enjoy nature in their everyday life. In Dubai, people plan to build a new shopping mall with a large garden, so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. And South Korea has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. Getting close to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. In Switzerland, "forest schools" are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and exercise a lot outside.
So after building cities for so long, perhaps it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.

One of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had was in Morocco. It was a trip to the desert. We set off from Marrakesh at 7 a.m. in a minibus and headed southeast. The countryside on the way was very unusual, with dry grey cliffs(悬崖). Below them in the canyons were lots of green palm trees. When we got to the Atlas Mountains, we ran into a snowstorm, and it got very cold in the bus. It was incredible to think that the hot desert was so near.
After travelling for two days, we finally got to Merzouga,a tiny town on the edge of the Sahara Desert. We left our stuff in a hostel and drove to the place from which the caravans(宿营拖车)departed. Before sunset, we boarded our camels and rode into the desert over the dunes(沙丘). The dunes were amazing-they changed colour depending on the angle of the sun. The ride lasted about two hours. When we reached the camp, it was dark and cold, and I was starving. We sat in the camp and waited for dinner. Several hours later, they brought a lamb dish, which five of us shared from a plate, eating with our hands.
After dinner, everyone went to sleep in tents, except me. I’ve always wanted to have the experience of sleeping in the desert, under the stars. But I didn’t realize it could get so cold at night. So I took the same blanket that I used to ride the camel and covered myself in it to keep warm.During the day, the temperatures can reach 50°C ,but at night, they fall to 4°C. The dunes looked like snow, and the clear sky covered with stars was an amazing sight. No wonder the Moors(摩尔人) were such great astronomers. They had a planetarium(天文馆) above them to see every night.
Suddenly,I saw a shooting star, and I made a wish: I wish I could come back sometime in the future to enjoy the wonderful starry night once again ..
1.How long did the writer spend getting to the edge of the Sahara Desert?
2. How did the group of people go into the desert?
3. What was the weather like when the writer reached the camp?
4. How did the writer keep warm when he was looking at the stars?
5. What should we be careful about when travelling in deserts?
