At its tables one could hear the most preposterous stories, such as how a giant spider turned into a demon until it was finally struck by lightning:or the most extraordinary views, such as how far it was possible to prevent all foreign armies from landing by the simple expedient of building a long high wall along the seacoast.Yet this was also the place to learn the latest aria5 devised by some Beijing opera actor or the most sophisticated method for preparing opium.Here too one could see newly-acquired treasures such as an excavated jade fan pendant or a three-colour glazed snuff-box.The teahouse was indeed an important place,almost a centre of cultural exchange. It is just such a teahouse we are about to see.
