16 Don Quixote's Last Battle
The hanging legs
We must leave out many of the adventures of Don Quixote and
Sancho Panza, and tell the story of his last battle. One evening they
were riding to Barcelona, and it became dark before they found an inn.
They had to pass the night in a small wood, not far from the road.As
Sancho went among the trees,he struck his head against something.
Feeling with his hands,he found that it was a pair of legs hanging from
a tree.Shaking with fear,he went on a little way,and found another
pair of legs hanging down."Help, master,"he cried,"The trees are full
of men's legs and feet."
Don Quixote came, and soon understood what had happened."There
is nothing to be afraid of,"he said,"these legs belong to robbers and
killers. They have been caught and hanged here by police officers."
Don Quixote makes a friend
As you can guess3,they did not sleep much that night. And when
morning came, they saw dead bodies on half the trees in the wood.As
they were getting ready to leave,a company of more than forty robbers

appeared. They ordered the two travellers to stay there until their
captain came. They had been surprised3,and it was useless to fight.
When the leader came,he was very surprised to see Don Quirote.
"Do not worry, good friend,"he said,"you are not the prisoner of a
wicked robber.I am Roque Guinart, more famous for kindness than
cruel deeds..”
“Brave Roque,”answered Don Quixote,“I am sad when I think
how careless I was. When your men found me,I was not on my horse,
and I did not have my shield and sword ready. It is for this reason that I
am your prisoner. You will easily believe this when I tell you that I am
Don Quixote de la Mancha.I am famous all over the world."
Chance had brought together a strange pair-the mad knight-errant
and the kind robber. This Roque was not an ordinary5 robber. He came
from a good family. He was also kind to the poor and the helpless. He
had heard about Don Quixore's strange madness and was very pleased to
meet him.Roque Guinart asked Don Quixote to travel with him for a few
days.He sent a message to a friend in Barcelona asking him to greet and
help the knight when he reached this city.
A few quiet days
Roque's friend in Barcelona was a rich man called Don Antonio
Moreno. He greeted the knight with great kindness and listened carefully
to his mad ideas.Don Antonio and his friends laughed at Don Quixote,
but he did not know.Sancho was well liked among the servants, who
enjoyed his amusing stories very much. Both the knight and his squire
were,for a few days,very happy.

The Knight of the Moon
One morning,Don Quixote was riding outside the town when he
saw a knight in armour. On his shield was painted a moon. The knight
stopped and called to Don Quixote,"Famous knight,Don Quixote de la
Mancha,I am the knight of the Moon.Perhaps you have already heard
my great name.I have come here with a purpose2.You must say that
my lady is far more beautiful than Dulcinea del Toboso. If you agree,
your life is safe.If you do not, then we must fight. If you are beaten,
you must promise to go back to your village and live there for one year
in peace. You must not look for any adventure as a knight. If I am
beaten, then you may order me to do what you wish."
At these words,Don Quirote was very surprised. But he answered
calmly,"Knight of the Moon,I have heard nothing of you until today.
Anyone who has seen the wonderful Dulcinea never talks as foolishly as
you do.I am ready to fight.Get ready, and I will do the same."
Don Quixote's last battle
The chief judge of Barcelona was riding that way with many
friends, among whom was Don Antonio. He saw the two knights and
asked them why they were getting ready to fight. The Knight of the
Moon explained that the fight was to decide who was more beautiful, his
lady or Don Quixote's lady. The judge knew about Don Quixote's
madness. He wanted some fun with the mad knight. So he took this as a
joke and allowed the fight. He stood there to see what was going to
happen.
The two knights rode away from each other,to be in the proper

was much better and stronger than Don Quixote's.Without touching2 his

putting his lance at his visor,he said,"You have lost the battle, knight.
If you do not agree with my conditions, you will lose your life too."
Don Quixote answered in a weak voice,"Strike, and kill me.
Nothing can make me say that Dulcinea is not the most beautiful woman

“That is not necessary,”answered the winner,“I only want the

This was what the Knight of the Moon wanted. He bowed3 to the
