10 Don Quixote and the Prisoners Don Quixote finds a helmet After the adventure with the sheep,Don Quixote and Sancho Panza had to pass the night in a wood. They could find no inn or castle.Next morning, they saw a barber riding on his donkey to a village. He was wearing a new hat.So when it began to rain,he put his basin on his head to keep his hat dry.It was a fine new basin made of brass. When the sun shone through the clouds, one could see it a mile away. As he went along happily, the barber felt pleased with himself and with all the world. But suddenly he saw a wild man in old armour, riding on a bony horse. He was rushing towards him at great speed, and shouting in a terrible voice,"Defend yourself, you wicked man,or give me that helmet which is rightly mine!” The barber quickly jumped down from his donkey, and Don Quixote's lance just missed him.Filled with fear,he dropped the basin, and ran for his life. His attacker,Don Quixote, did not go after him.He stood there, looking at the basin very pleased."The wicked man has acted wisely," ·094· 10 唐吉诃德和囚犯 唐吉诃德找到一顶头盔 经过和羊群的那场冒险,唐吉河德和桑丘·潘沙 不得不在丛林中过夜。 第 ①barber /'ba:ba/n. ④wild /warld/a. “那个坏蛋做得 蛮聪明的,”他对桑丘说道,“下去把那顶好头盔拿 ·095· Don Quixote he said to Sancho,"get down, and give me that wonderful helmet. It is exactly the kind of helmet that I was looking for." Don Ouixote put the thing on his head and turned it round, looking for the visor."This great helmet was made for a man with a very large head.I am sorry the visor has gone." Hearing the basin again called a helmet,Sancho laughed. But an angry look from his master told him to be careful. He explained that he was laughing to think of the big head that once filled the bowl②,“I have seen many helmets like that hanging up at barber's doors." Don Quixote answered slowly,"I think this magic helmet belonged once to a foolish merchant③.He saw that it was made of gold④,and he cut it in two pieces. Then he sold half. The other half he changed into its present shape. It is,as you say, very like a barber's basin. But it will be made into a helmet for me and, until then,I shall wear it as it is now." “What I want to know,”said Sancho,“is whether I may take that donkey? It seems much better than mine." “That excellent horse,.you mean,”answered his master.“No,I cannot allow that.It is against the laws of chivalry to rob a beaten enemy of his horse. But you may take the saddle if your need is very great..” "It is."said Sancho, and he took the barber's saddle. It was a very nice one,and he put it on his own donkey. The two men then went on again.Don Quixote let Rozinante choose the direction,as knights-errant usually did. ①excellent /eksalant/a. ②bowl/bau/n. 他看到这顶头盔 ③merchant/m3:tfant/i商 是金子做的,就把它砍成两半。 ·097· Don Quixote The prisoners Don Quixote was riding along, thinking of his lady,Dulcinea. Then suddenly he saw twelve men coming towards him. They were fastened together by their necks,on a long iron chain. There were more chains on their hands. With them there were two men on horses, and two walking. “They are prisoners,.”said Sancho,“who must go to work in ships as a punishment..” “Prisoners,do you say?”answered Don Quixote,“Then I will do my duty.I must help those who are taken by wicked men." “But the prisoners are the wicked men.”said Sancho,“They are receiving their fair punishment." But Don Quixote did not listen to his words. He rode towards one of the officers.Very politely,he asked if he could talk to the unlucky men about their sad condition. The officer agreed, and the knight spoke to the first man in the line 3.He asked him what he had done wrong. “I was in love,”said the man, laughing. "In love?"asked Don Quixote, thinking this was a story of knights and ladies. “Yes,”said the prisoner,“in love with some fine clothes;I ran of with them. But the law officers took the clothes from me.They rewarded my true love with a hundred blows on my back and three years in prison.” The next prisoner was an old man with white hair.He had done many wicked things. After him came a man about thirty years old.He was chained 5 more tightly than the others.Don Quixote asked who he ·098· 唐吉可德 囚犯 唐吉诃德一面向前走着,一面想念他的夫人, 杜尔西内娅。 用锁链拴 住:拘禁:束缚 ·099· Don Quixote was and why he was chained like this. “This is Pasamonte,”answered one of the officers,“He is the most wicked man in Spain. He is very clever, and even with all these chains, he may run away.” “Yes,”said the prisoner,.“I am Pasamonte, who will be famous one day, everywhere that Spanish is spoken." It would be difficult to find a worse company of thieves, robbers and killers3.But Don Quixote did not think so.When he had finished his questions,he spoke to them as follows: Don Quixote frees them "Dear brothers, you are all prisoners. It is my duty to rescue you from this cruel condition. So I must ask these officers who have chained you to unlock your chains. They will not do it because I ask,but yet they will do it because they fear my lance and sword."
