7 A Talk between Don Quixote and Sancho
Sancho asks for his island
Sancho had watched the fight between his master and the squire with
great interest. His mind was full of his master's promise. So now he went
to him, knelt, and looked up at his master's face."What do you want,
Sancho?"asked Don Quixote.
Sancho held one of the knight's hands and said,"Make me governor
of the island that you have won in this fight. It may be big,but I will
rule it as well and wisely as any governor of any island anywhere."
Don Quixote answered very seriously,"Brother Sancho, you must
understand this adventure. It was only an accidental meeting on the
road. For adventures like this the only reward is a broken head or a lost
ear.Be patient;we shall soon have adventures that will give you
islands and even better things."
The squire thanked his master, and they continued on their way.As
they rode,Sancho said,"I think we ought to hide. That man you beat so
well will certainly go to the king's officers 5.If they catch us,we may
have to stay in prison for many days."

Don Quixote
“Do not talk so foolishly.”answered Don Quixote,“You will never
read about a knight-errant who is punished for killing a man in a fair
fight. There is no need to be afraid of the king's officers.Tell me,have
you ever seen a knight braver than I am?"
“You are right,”said Sancho Panza,“I have never had a master as
brave as you.But I hope we do not pay for your bravery in prison. But
let me see your ear.I have some cloth in my bags.Perhaps I can stop it
from bleeding3.”
Don Quixote talks about his magician
“Thank you.”said Don Quixote,“'It is unlucky that I have forgotten④
my magic medicine. One drop of the medicine of Fierabras could
make my ear well immediately."
“Magic medicine?”said Sancho,surprised..
"I know quite well how it is made.Anyone who has this medicine
may laugh at death and pain.I will make some soon and give it to you,
and tell you how you must use it.In a battle, you may see me cut in two
halves. This often happens to a knight. You must then lift up gently that
part of me that has fallen to the ground. Then put it carefully and exactly
on the other half, which is still on the horse. Then give me two drops it
the magic medicine, and in a minute I shall be well again."
“Well,”said Sahcho,“I want no islands to govern if you know the
secret of a medicine like this.A small quantity would make me a rich
man.”
“You shall learn the secret soon,”said his master,“and greater
secrets. But now look after my ear as well as you can.It hurts me."

“它的制法我了如指掌。不管是谁得到了这种药

可能看到我被劈成两半。但对一个骑士而言,这是
司空见惯的事。那时你必须把我摔在地上的那一半

“你很快就能学会那个秘方,”他的主人说,

Don Quixote
Don Quixote is angry again
Don Quixote now noticed for the first time his helmet was broken.
He became wild with anger. He lifted his sword and said seriously,"I
shall punish the wicked man who has done this. And until I do,I will
not eat bread at table, nor sleep under a roof②,nor..”Here he could
say no more, because he was so angry.
Sancho was rather frightened by these angry words,"If the gentleman
has obeyed your orders and visited your lady at Toboso then he has done
all you asked. He should not be punished again,if he does nothing
wrong.”
“You are right.”answered Don Quixote,“I need not punish that man
any more.Yet I shall live like that until I have won another good helmet
from a knight.”
“Think what you are saying, sir,”cried Sancho,“Many days may
pass before you meet somebody with a good helmet. What will you do?
How long can you continue sleeping in your clothes, outside, every
night? In this part of the country we shall only meet men driving mules.
They never wear helmets, and perhaps never hear about these things."
Don Quixote's promises
“You are mistaken,”answered Don Quixote,“Before we have gone
two hours on the road,we shall see knights and soldiers5.We shall meet
knights who have fought the great rulers of China. Then I shall not only

where we may sleep tonight."
Sancho took a few small pieces of bread from the bag."This is all I
have.It is very poor food for a knight."
“You are wrong again,”answered Don Quixote,“Knights-errant do
not need good food. They are pleased to live without food for several
weeks. When they eat something, they are satisfied with the most
simple food they can find."
When they had finished their poor supper, they went to look for a
castle. But they could not find one.So they had to sleep in a hut
belonging to some poor shepherds.
