4 Don Quixote and Sancho Panza
The books are burned
The next day, while Don Quixote was sleeping, the priest came with
Nicholas. With the help of his niece and the servant, they burned all the
books. Two days later,Don Quixote got up from his bed and went
straight to the room where he had left his books. When he came to the
place where the door had been,he was very surprised to see nothing but
a wall.
"What does this mean?"he asked the servant, who was coming up
the stairs. The priest had told the servant what to say,and she answered
immediately. She told him that the room and everything in it had been
carried away by the Devil
At this moment,Don Quixote's niece came up the stairs. She
remembered better what the priest had said,"It was a magician who
came one night when you were away.He went into your room, but I do
not know what he did there. After a few minutes,he flew away through
the roof④,leaving the house full of smoke⑤.”
"When we went to see what had happened, the room and the books

had disappeared I dont know what all this means. But I remember that
this wicked old man said his name was Munaton the Wise. Before he
left,he said in a loud voice that he wanted to hurt the owner of the
books.”
"I am sure that this was Friston,"said Don Quixote. He had listened
very carefully to the strange story."He is a very great magician, and a
great enemy of mine.He is very angry with me because one day I shall
fight and defeat a knight whom he likes.Because he cannot stop this,he
does these wicked things to me."
The real truth was that while Don Ouixote was ill,the wall was built
where the door had been. This had been the priest's idea.He had also
told the women to tell Don Quixote this story, which he believed
immediately.
Don Quixote makes plans
For two weeks Don Quixote stayed quietly at home.He and his old
friends, the priest and Nicholas, the barber, had many pleasant talks.
They talked about Don Quixore's greatest interest:the need to have
knights-errant in the world again.Don Quixote was sure that he was the
right man to be a knight-errant.
All this time,he was making plans secretly with a man called
Sancho Panza. This man was a poor but honest country worker, and he
lived in the village. He was almost as foolish as the old knight himself.
This simple man listened to Don Quixote's stories of great adventure. At
last,he agreed to go with him as his squire. He was ready to do this
because his new master spoke about an island.Don Quixote said he

Don Quixote repaired his armour again, and got a new lance. He
also decided to take some money with him this time. Then he told his
squire to get ready to start. Sancho was short and fat and not used to?
walking. He asked if he could bring his donkey, saying it was a very
good one. The knight did not know what to say. He had never read about
a squire riding a donkey. At las t he agreed, deciding that he would soon
find a horse for his squire. He would take a horse from the first wicked
knight he met.
Don Quixote and Sancho Panza
When everything was ready, they set off one night, together. They
said good-bye to nobody. In the morning they were too far away@ for
anyone to follow them. Sancho Panza only thought about the island
which his master had promised him. Don Quixote was thinking of much
nobler things, until he heard the voice of his squire, “I hope, sir, you
have not forgotten the island.I shall know well how to govern@ it, even
if it is very big.”
“Have no fear about that, ”replied Don Quixote, “Knights-errant
have always rewarded their squires with presents of land. But I shall do
better. Instead of waiting until you are old, I shall reward you as soon
as possible. Perhaps before a week has passed, you will be king of your
island.”
“Well, ”said Sancho, “if this wonderful

wife, Joan, will be queen and my sons, princes.”
“Who is not sure about it?”answered Don Quixote.
