2 Don Quixote Is Made a Knight He leaves his house "The world is waiting for me",said Don Quixote softly to himself, as he got out of bed next morning. The sun was rising, and he put on his armour. He went downstairs very quietly, because he did not want to wake anyone. He walked outside, found Rozinante, and rode away.He knew he had started his great adventure, and he was filled with joy. But soon he thought of something that he must do.A great king or ruler had to make him a knight.Until he was a knight,he should not fight any man who was.Don Quixote did not know what to do. Then he remembered some of the brave men in the books of chivalry. They had asked somebody they met on the road to make them a knight.Don Quixore decided to do the same thing, and he was happy again. He rode on,and let his horse choose the way, because all knights-errant did this when they began their adventures. ·013· Don Quixote He rides until evening As Don Quixore rode along,he imagined great fights which he always won.He rode slowly, for hour after hour, until the sun was high in the sky.He rode all that day,but found no adventures. When evening came, both he and his horse were tired and hungry. He was looking for2 a castle3 where he could get rest and food, when he saw an inn.It was almost dark when he rode up to the door. The inn was one of the poorest in Spain. It was used by workmen and poor travelers. But the mad knight thought it was a big castle. Two dirty beggar5-women were standing outside the door.Don Quixote imagined they were rich ladies, taking an evening walk in front of the castle walls. Then,to complete this foolish idea,a man in a field blew his horn He was only calling some animals back to the farm. But Don Ouixote was sure that a soldier on the castle walls had seen him.He thought the soldier was telling the ruler of the castle to come and greet him.He was very pleased, and pushed up his visor. The beggar-women looked at his tired, dusty face. They were frightened, and were ready to run away. But he said to them,"Do not go away, gentle ladies.Do not judge me wrongly. You need not be afraid of me.I am a knight, and a knight will not hurt great ladies like you." The inn-keeper greets Don Quixote When they heard this unusual man call them great ladies, the women ·014· 唐吉何德 他骑马骑到傍晚 ①imagine /'maed.3nWg想象, 唐吉河德骑着马一路走下去,同时幻想出一些 设想 总是他赢的伟大战斗。 6 complete /kam'pli:t/v. They laughed loudly, and for a long time, but Don Quixote spoke to them seriously①,“Beauty and impoliteness2 do not go well together. To laugh without thinking is foolish.Do not think that my words are impolite.I only want to do good.I am ready to be your servant in every way.” At these serious words, the women laughed even more loudly. But before anything could happen, the inn-keeper arrived. He was a fat, pleasant man who lived a quiet life.At first, when he saw the strange man on his thin horse,he too wanted to laugh. But he saw the knight's sword and lance and he was a little afraid. So he went up to Don Quixore and said politely,"Sir,you may pass the night in my inn.I have everything you need except5 a bed." Don Quixote was pleased that the master of the castle-that is,the inn-keeper-was so polite. He replied happily,"It is easy to please me, sir;a soldier's needs are very simple." The inn-keeper helped Don Quixote to get down from his horse. The old man was very weak because he had eaten nothing all day."Please take care of my horse,"he said,"he is the best horse in all the world." Don Quixote is looked after The inn-keeper gave one look at poor Rozinante, but saw nothing to praise. He quickly took the animal away, and came back to look after his unusual guest.During this time,Don Quixote had allowed the women to take off his heavy armour. When they had finished, they asked him if he wanted anything to eat."A simple supper is all I wish,"answered ·016· 唐吉河德 人时,两个女人都哈哈大笑起来,而且笑了好长一 ①seriously /sirtasll ad. 我只是想对 ,mp3'aitnis/n. “我 ·017· Don Quixote Don Ouixote. They told him they had only a little fish,so he asked them to bring it. When the fish came it was the poorest kind, and smelt very bad. The table was outside because the room was so hot.So there Don Quixote sat down to have his supper. When he had nearly finished,a country workman walked past, playing some simple music.Don Quixote imagined that the inn was a castle, and the inn-keeper a ruler;he thought the beggar-women were great ladies. So it was easy to imagine that this was beautiful music. He thought the music was played to amuse him while he sat at table. He ate his supper, thinking that his first adventures were very satisfactory3. A promise④is made But something still troubled5 him-nobody had yet made him a knight. So when he had finished his supper,he took the inn-keeper into a room and shut the door. Then Don Quixote knelt in front of him.He said,"I will not rise from my knees, brave knight, until you kindly do what I ask you. This will be a good thing to do,and will help all the people in the world." The inn-keeper looked at the old gentleman kneeling on the ground, and speaking strange words. He did not know what to do or say.He asked him to rise, but Don Quixote refused At last he had to promise. "Sir,I was sure you would agree. Now let me tell you what I want. Tomorrow, when sun rises, you must make me a knight. To deserve this,I shall stay awake tonight.I shall watch my armour in the church which belongs to the castle. Then,in the morning,I shall be able to ·018· 唐吉何德 只求简单的一顿晚餐。” /sets'facktar/a. 明天,当太阳升起时,你必须任 拜堂 ·019· Don Quixote begin my great and dangerous adventures." The inn-keepers'jokes The inn-keeper was now beginning to understand that Don Quixote was mad.But he was fond of2 jokes,so he decided to do what the old gentleman asked. He praised Don Quixote for wanting to become a knight. He said that this was exactly3 what he expected from a brave and excellent gentleman. He said that when he was young he also traveled, looking for adventure.(In one way, this was true, for he had been well known as a thief and a robber. He had been inside many Spanish prisons.)Now that he was old,he said,he was living in peace in his castle. He liked most to help knights on their journeys5.(He meant that he got rich from travelers;at his inn,the prices were high.) Then he said that there was no church now, because they were building a new one.But the old gentleman could pass the night and watch his armour in an open place inside the castle walls."And tomorrow,"he said,"you shall be made a real knight.Nobody in all the world shall be a truer knight." How Don Quixote passes the night Don Ouixote thanked the inn-keeper for his kindness, and promised to obey him always. Then he got ready for the nights watch.Outside the inn there was a place for horses to drink.Into this he put his armour. Then, with his lance in his hand,he began to walk up and down. 宽exactly/hg'zaektlv ad. ·021·
