Chapter 28
Seen from the outside,Monte Cristo's house in Auteuil had nothing
splendid about it,nothing of what one might expect of a residence
chosen by the magnificent Count of Monte Cristo.
At exactly six o'clock Captain Maximilien Morrel arrived on his
horse.
“I'm sure I'm the first to arrive,”said Maximilien.“I wanted to be
able to talk to you alone for a while before the others came."
At that very moment, however, two riders on winded horses and
a carriage drawn by a sweating team drew up in front of the house.
Lucien Debray quickly dismounted, went to the door of the carriage,
opened it and gave his hand to Madame Danglars as she alighted.
Baron Danglars alighted after his wife, looking as pale as if he were
coming from the grave instead of from his carriage.
“Major③Bartolomeo Cavalcanti and Viscount Andrea Cavalcanti!”
announced Baptistin.
“Cavalcanti!”said Debray.
“That's a fine name,”said Maximilien.

The Count Of Monte Cristo
"Who are those two gentlemen?"said Danglars to Monte Cristo.
“Major Cavalcanti and his son.”
“That tells me their name, but nothing else,”
"Oh,yes,it's true you're not acquainted with the Italian nobility.
The Cavalcanti are a race of princes."
“A large fortune?”asked the banker..
“Enormous③.”
“What do they do?”
"They try unsuccessfully to spend their whole fortune. They have a
credit open with you,by the way,or at least so they told me when
they came to see me day before yesterday. In fact,I invited them
especially on your account.I'll introduce you to them."
“It seems to me they speak excellent④French.”
"The son was educated in France. You'll find him full of enthusiasm
for French women,he has his heart set on finding a wife in Paris."
“Now that's a fine idea!”said Danglars sarcastically
"Monsieur and Madame de Villefort!announced Baptistin.
Monte Cristo looked up and saw Bertuccio standing in the small
salon. He went over to him and asked,"Did you want something,
Monsieur Bertuccio?”
"You haven't told me how many places to set for dinner,
Excellency.”
"Ah,yes, that's true.Well, you can count them for yourself."
The steward looked through the half open door.Monte Cristo's
eyes were riveted on him.
“Oh,my God!”cried Bertuccio.
“What'the matter??”asked the Count.

“Eight,”repeated Bertuccio.
"Just a moment,Monsieur Bertuccio, don't be in such a hurry to
leave:you're overlooking one of my guests.Look a little to the left
there,that's Monsieur Andrea Cavalcanti."
This time the steward almost uttered a cry,but Monte Cristo's
glance made it die away on his lips.
