Chapter 16
Monsieur Morrel returned to Marseilles on the first of September.
His family had been waiting for him with great anxiety, for his trip to
Paris was his last chance of salvation①. Morrel had been thinking of
Danglas for a long time, but there are certain instinctive② repugnances③
which are beyond one's control and Morrel had put off approaching
him as late as possible. And he was right, for he returned to Marseilles
overcome by the humiliation{④ of a refusal.
He kissed his wife and daughter, shook hands warmly with
Emmanuel, shut himself in his office
“This time we're lost," said the two women to Emmanuel. Then
after a short discussion, they decided that Julie would write to her
brother, who was in garrison{} at Nimes, asking him to come at once.
Although he was only twenty two years old, Maximilien Morrel
already had great influence over his father.
