Chapter 12
It concerned a ship laden with Turkish carpets, cashmere and
cloth from the Levant. It was necessary to find some neutral ground
where the exchange could be made, and then attempt to land the goods
on the coast of France.
The captain of the Jeune Amelie suggested that the Isle of Monte
Cristo, being completely deserted and free of soldier and customs
agents, would be a good place to unload the cargo When he heard
the name of Monte Cristo,Dantes trembled with joy.
By five o'clock the next evening the Isle of Monte Cristo was clearly
visible.They landed at ten o'clock.
No one suspected anything, however, and when he took a gun
the next morning and announced his intention of going off to shoot one
of the wild goats which could be seen leaping from rock to rock.
As they were all watching him,his foot slipped and they saw him
staggeron the edge of a rock and disappear. They all rushed forward
at once, for they all loved Dantes despite his superiority
