Chapter 7 The next morning, after the jailer's visit, Dantes heard three knocks on the wall. "Is it you?" he asked. "Here I am!" "Has your jailer gone?" asked the voice "Yes. He won't come back until this evening. We have twelve hours of freedom." A moment later Dantes heard the sound of a mass^{①} of stones and earth falling and a hole appeared in the bottom of the passage he had begun to dig. Then he saw a head emerge② through this hole, and soon a man had climbed up out of it and into his cell{③} He appeared to be at least sixty-five years old "Now will you tell me who you are?" asked Dantes "Yes, if that still interests you now that I'm unable to be of any use to you. I'm the Abbe④ Faria. I've been in the Chateau d'If since 1811." "But why were you imprisoned?" "Because in 1807 I dreamed of the project which Napoleon tried to carry out in 1811."
