Sitting in the garden for my friend’s birthday. I felt a buzz (振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). The position—measuring soil quality in the Sahara Desert as part of an undergraduate research programme — had felt like the answer I had spent years looking for.
I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of the road for my science career.
So I was shocked when, not long after the email, Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shocked—and overjoyed—when she invited me to talk with her about potential projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all.
I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue.
When I applied to graduate school, I found three programmes promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about.
Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them.
34. How did the author feel upon seeing the email sender’s name?
A. Anxious. B. Angry. C. Surprised. D. Settled.
35. After talking with Professor Devon, the author decided to ________.
A. criticise the review process B. stay longer in the Sahara Desert
C. apply to the original project again D. put his heart and soul into the lab work
36. According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was ________.
A. demanding B. inspiring C. misleading D. amusing
37. What can we learn from this passage?
A. An invitation is a reputation. B. An innovation is a resolution.
C. A rejection can be a redirection. D. A reflection can be a restriction.
A 35. D 36. B 37. C

The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…”and my vision blurred (模糊). 故选A。
根据第三段“So I was shocked when, not long after the email, Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shocked—and overjoyed—when she invited me to talk with her about potential projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all.
根据第四段“I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue. (我发现自己和一个机器人教授一起研究从沙漠中远程收集数据的技术。我可以在沙发上完成这个项目,而不是在沙漠的酷热中完成,它不仅在封锁期间幸存下来,而且在传统方法不奏效的地方也奏效了。最后,我有了新的科学兴趣去追求)”可推知,机器人学教授的项目很鼓舞人心。故选B。
【37题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them. (我明白了有时候我需要抓住提供的机会,即使这些机会在当时听起来并不完美,也要充分利用,而不是一成不变地制定计划)”结合文章中作者结合自己被拒绝后得到了更好的职业发展机会,告诉我们最初的拒绝给予了更好的方向。故C选项“拒绝可以是重定向”最符合文章的主旨。故选C。

The halo effect (光环效应) is a type of decision in which our general impression of a person influences how we feel and think about their character. Essentially, your general impression of a person impacts your judgment of that person’s specific characteristics. Viewpoints on a single characteristic can carry over to how people perceive (意识到) other aspects of that person.
One great example of the halo effect in action is our overall impression of famous people. People perceive them as attractive, successful, and often likable, so people also tend to see them as intelligent, kind, and funny.
Psychologist Edward Thorndike first created the term “halo effect” in a 1920 paper. In the experiment described in the paper, Thorndike asked officers in the military to judge a variety of qualities in their soldiers. These characteristics included such things as leadership, physical appearance, and intelligence. Thorndike’s goal was to determine how ratings of one quality might affect the judgments of other characteristics. He found that high ratings of a particular quality had a close connection to high ratings of other characteristics, while negative ratings of a specific quality also led to lower ratings of other characteristics.
The halo effect may have an impact on many real-world settings. A typical one is in the workplace. Experts suggest that the halo effect is one of the important factors affecting performance reviews. For example, a worker’s passion or positive attitude may cover their lack of knowledge or skill, causing the manager and coworkers to rate them more highly than their actual performance earns. Another study found that physical attractiveness has a positive effect not only on a person’s self-confidence but also on their financial well-being.
Despite awareness of the halo effect, avoiding its influence on our perceptions and decisions is out of the question. It’s just one of many biases (偏见) that lead to hurried decisions and errors in judgment. The deep-rooted biases in our minds will keep influencing our thinking and behavior, even if we know about them.
38 Which of the following is an example of the halo effect?
A. We are what we think. B. Who is beautiful is also kind.
C. Objects appear better when compared. D. One is impressed by what comes after.
39. What does Thorndike’s experiment intend to reveal?
A. The standard for judging soldiers. B. The negative effect of rating people.
C. The characteristics of military leaders. D. The impact of people’s one specific quality.
40. What is the result of the worker’s attitude stated in paragraph 4?
A. Others’ partial and unequal judgment. B. The worker’s higher performance.
C. A friendly working environment. D. Others’ following his example.
B 39. D 40. A

根据第一段“The halo effect (光环效应) is a type of decision in which our general impression of a person influences how we feel and think about their character. Essentially, your general impression of a person impacts your judgment of that person’s specific characteristics.(光环效应是一种决策,我们对一个人的总体印象会影响我们对他们性格的感受和思考。从本质上讲,你对一个人的总体印象会影响你对这个人具体特征的判断)”可知,光环效应是我们对一个人的总体印象,它会影响我们对其性格特点的感受和判断。结合第二段中“People perceive them as attractive, successful, and often likable, so people also tend to see them as intelligent, kind, and funny.(人们认为他们有魅力、事业有成,而且往往很讨人喜欢,所以人们也倾向于觉得他们聪明、善良且风趣)”可知,B选项“漂亮的人也是善良的”符合光环效应。
根据第三段“Thorndike’s goal was to determine how ratings of one quality might affect the judgments of other characteristics.(桑代克的目标是确定一种品质的评分如何影响对其他特征的判断)”可知,桑代克的实验目的是确定对一种品质的评价如何影响对其他特征的判断,也就是揭示一个人特定品质的影响。故选D。

D
Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means cold, hard data-some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they have learned in the science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, noticed that students who used art in the classroom listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What’s more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons had involved(涉及) art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided traditional science lessons and art-focused ones. In a traditional science class, for example, students might read aloud from a book. In the art-focused one, they might sing the information instead.
The team randomly assigned(随机分配) each of the 350 students to either a traditional science classroom or an art-focused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit-about three weeks. When they changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way, each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes.
The team found that students who started off in a traditional class performed better after they moved into an art-focused class. But those who started off in an art-focused class did well even when they went back to a traditional science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques(技巧) after going back to a traditional class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sing the songs that they learned after finishing the unit. “The more we hear something, the more we retain it,” Hardiman says. “It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own.”
41. Why did Mariale Hardiman do the study?
A. To prove the importance of art at school.
B. To see if art might improve science learning
C. To find a way to help her students learn better.
D. To know how to encourage students to ask questions.
42. What were the students required to do in the experiment?
A. Take two types of classes. B. Learn three units in total.
C. Learn two topics for three weeks. D. Choose what they’d like to learn.
43. What does the underlined word “retain” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Finish. B. Express. C. Improve. D. Memorize.
44. What is the text mainly about?
A. Art helps students develop creativity.
B. Art-focused classes interest students a lot.
C. Art can make science easier to remember.
D. Art has something in common with science.
B 42. A 43. D 44. C

根据第二段中的“What’s more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons had involved(涉及) art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.(更重要的是,当他们的科学课涉及艺术时,学生们似乎更记得他们被教授的东西。为了证明这一点,Hardiman与一些研究人员和六所当地学校合作。)”可知,Mariale Hardiman做这项研究是为了证明艺术是否能够提高科学学习。故选B。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“This way, each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes. (通过这种方式,每个学生都有一个以艺术为重点的课程和一个传统的课程。每个单元都以两种方式教授给不同的学生群体。这使研究人员能够看到学生在这两种类型的课堂上的表现。)”可知,学生在实验中被要求上两种不同类型的课。故选A。
根据第二段中的“What’s more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons had involved(涉及) art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.(更重要的是,当他们的科学课涉及艺术时,学生们似乎更记得他们被教授的东西。为了证明这一点,Hardiman与一些研究人员和六所当地学校合作。)”可知,这个研究是为了找到艺术和记忆科学知识之间的关系,所以研究的结论应与记忆有关,结合划线句上文“ Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sing the songs that they learned after finishing the unit. (课堂教师报告说,许多学生在完成本单元后继续唱他们学过的歌曲。)”可推断,此处表达的是“我们听某个事情越多,我们保留的也越多”。retain在这里与memorize(记忆)意思最接近。
通读全文可知,第一段最后一句“Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they have learned in the science class.(现在,一项研究发现,艺术可以帮助学生更好地记住他们在科学课上学到的东西。)” 最后一句“It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own.(这表明艺术可以帮助学生运用创造性的学习方法。)”

Accompanied by typical Jin opera (晋剧) music, a red-faced performer with a long beard showed up at the hall of a high school in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. All the students in the hall stood up and craned (伸长) their necks to get a better look. In their eyes, Jin opera was something from the past.
They are not alone. It goes without saying that kids nowadays are much more familiar with popular music than traditional opera, which is why performing artist Wu Lingyun, together with his colleagues, goes to campuses to promote the art.
Wu Lingyun is renowned for his role as Guan Gong, a general during the late Han Dynasty period.Wu began playing the role in 1985, at the age of 21, and has been associated with it ever since.
Wu was significantly influenced by his parents, both of whom are also famous Jin opera performers. With a natural talent for performing and great effort, Wu was soon recognized by audiences and later awarded the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award in 2000, the highest award for Chinese drama performing arts.
Given Wu’s considerable fame, one might think he would now prefer to enjoy a life of leisure. However, this is far from the case. Deep down, Wu has a big dream. He pictures a growing future for Jin opera. Wu expected more chances for more people to get to know about the art, hoping Jin opera could become a worldwide art.
Wu has also made some changes to the traditional art to bring it up-to-date. “Jin opera should keep pace with the times if we want to bring it back to life and get the young generation to accept it,” he says,“An art without life can never survive.”

He is dedicated. Because he makes efforts to develop and promote Jin opera.

38. Which of the following is an example of the halo effect?
40 What is the result of the worker’s attitude stated in paragraph 4?
A. Others’ partial and unequal judgment. B. The worker’s higher performance.
C. A friendly working environment. D. Others’ following his example.

60. How did the students react to the performance at the hall? (no more than 10 words)
