The Camino de Santiago
How long is the Camino de Santiago? That depends. Some take on the all-Spanish 1, 000 km Via de la Plata route from Seville to Santiago to Compostela, while the most popular route, from Saint Jean Pied de Port in France-sometimes called the Camino Francés or French Way-is 790 km.
A popular 116 km hike, ideal for 10 days of leisurely walking, is known as the English Way-not because English Christians prefer camping and pub stops to walking, but because it is believed the route, from Ferrol on the Galician Coast, was used by pilgrims (朝圣者) arriving from Britain and Ireland. The English Way starts with coastal views and passes through the small towns of Pontedeume and Betanzos, and lots of wooded and agricultural areas.

In November 1996, the National Art Museum of China received a donation of 117 paintings, sculptures and installations made after 1970 by European and US artists. Featured artists include important figures of modern and contemporary art, such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerhard Richter and David Hockney.
The donation was made by German collectors Irene and Peter Ludwig. The couple traveled in many Chinese cities in the 1980s and 1990s, witnessing what was happening following the country’s reform and opening-up. Peter Ludwig, an industrialist who held a PhD in art history, initialed a donation agreement with the museum in May 1996 but died two months later. His widow Irene Ludwig attended the donation ceremony and exhibition.
Yang Lizhou, then the museum’s vice director, recalled that when Peter Ludwig visited China to discuss about donation, he was not very determined but said “YES” after Yang told him that one quarter of the world’s population would support and remember him for his generosity.
The museum has toured the Ludwig collection in many cities over the past two decades, broadening people’s vision of fine arts. Many Chinese artists and art researchers had their first look at a real Picasso and also, got to know about the scope and depth of contemporary art. And now it exhibits 50 works from the collection to again mark the importance of the couple’s contribution to Chinese art circles and art education.
This portrait of Peter Ludwig shows a highly recognizable style of pop art figure Andy Warhol. Warhol portrayed many celebrities of various fields, including art, literature, movie, music and politics, in the 1970s, such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. Sketchy lines and a combination of bright colors highlight the subject’s distinctive personality, and bring him closer to the audience.
The Ludwig donated another three Picasso paintings, in which Man and Woman by a Flower Vase was completed three years before he died. The painting expressed fascinations of love and the burden it brings by merging the images of a woman and a man, where they seem physically independent while bound by scarfs reluctantly which made the man look dejected. This painting is distinctive from other masterpieces of Picasso.
4. What made Peter finally decide to donate his collections?
A. Yang’s encouragement. B. His passion for fine arts.
C. China’s reform and opening-up. D. His wealth and a PhD in art history.
5. What is the influence of the couple’s donation?
A. Making the museum more splendid.
B. Laying a solid foundation for Chinese art circle.
C. Widening Chinese people’s horizon of elegant arts.
D. Deepening people’s understanding of traditional art.
6. What does the underlined word “dejected” in Para 6 mean?
A. Depressed. B. Delighted. C. Dedicated. D. Deserted.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The important figures of modern art.
B. A German couple’s shining achievements.
C. A generous gift package from a German couple.
D. The significance of a German couple’s donation.
Forgetting is a fact of life that many people find frustrating. But growing evidence pushes back at the belief that a slip or escape in our recollection is evidently bad. Indeed, forgetting can sometimes help people cope psychologically or let go of useless knowledge.
In a new study, neuroscientist Tomas Ryan of Trinity College Dublin and his colleagues have examined the fundamental biology underlying a form of forgetting we experience every day. Their work suggests that when we can’t recall an old phone number or a high school teacher’s name, those details are not necessarily lost.
As Ryan explained to Mind Matters editor Daisy Yuhas, forgetting may be an active process that the brain uses to support learning. He also discussed how dementia (痴呆) may ultimately effect disordered forgetting more than lost memories.
You study an idea that some people may find counter-intuitive (反直觉的): forgetting can be part of learning. How so? We often think of forgetting as a loss of the brain power or a limitation. Memory loss from dementia or brain injury, for example, can be devastating. But we also experience “everyday forgetting” as we go about our lives because there’s just so much going on. We’re expected to learn and retain many things in order to function in modern society. Some are quite arbitrary, such as having to memorize facts you’ll never need again for school exams. Others are not so arbitrary but are still quite demanding, such as the knowledge you build to become a practicing doctor.
Although we may think of forgetting as a trouble, and it often is, it could be a feature of the brain rather than a bug. A growing body of research in neuroscience is studying the idea that forgetting is adaptive rather than limiting. So forgetting comes in many forms?
There are different kinds that people generally consider distinct. We may use the word amnesia (健忘症) for a kind of forgetting that most people would agree is neither adaptive nor beneficial. Some forms of amnesia make it difficult to form new memories while others make it difficult to recall memories formed before an injury.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A. By defining a concept. B. By presenting a study result.
C. By making comparison. D. By giving an example.
9. What does the author agree in the passage?
A. Dementia mainly results in lost memories.
B. Forgetting means imperfection of the brain.
C. It’s terrible that the best friend’s name escapes me.
D. The knowledge you need to be a teacher is not arbitrary.
10. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A. Scientists think forgetting limits our life.
B. Neuroscientists are researching the adaptive role of forgetting.
C. People would agree that amnesia is harmful in most condition.
D. Amnesia definitely makes it challenging to recollect memories.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the reasons of forgetting. B. To present the process of forgetting.
C. To emphasize the benefits of forgetting. D. To clarify the misunderstanding of forgetting.
Public health data signals a genuine crisis in adolescent mental health: rising rates of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. But as we worry about tweens and teens who are struggling, we can’t ignore another mounting effect — the burdens that are shouldered by their friends and peers in an “always on” world.
We have studied teens and tech for over a decade. Their networks are ever-expanding, in no small part because there’s a sense that being nice means accepting fellow requests from acquaintances and friends-of-friends. And it’s not just staying connected — it’s keeping up with what others post, too.
Social media platforms thus make it technically possible to maintain more relationships than we are historically actually wired to track and manage. The result is an overwhelming wave of social information. It’s especially intense for adolescents whose developmental sensitivities drive them to care deeply about what their peers are doing and thinking.
Significant stress comes with trying to be a “good friend” in the age of social media. Friendship requires both public and behind-the-scenes support. Even before a social media post is made public, close friends can be pulled into photo selection, editing, and final examination. Besides, they need to respond in the right way and in the right amount of time, which differs from one relationship to another. Replying too quickly can be seen as over-eager, especially when the friendship is new or not close. But when it’s a close friend, too long a lag (延迟) can be hurtful.
The qualities that are key to building or breaking friendships are actually the same as they’ve always been: mutual (相互的) sharing of joys and sorrows, a give and take of acceptance and support, and an ability to weather and resolve conflicts. But technologies have transformed how friendships play out. Social media increases the burdens that come along with being a good friend. Too often, these dynamics hit teens hard in ways that are lost on adults. And that is what should be changed with the help of parents, schools and other parts of society.
12. What makes teenagers’ networks continue to expand?
A. The pressure to be nice. B. The requests of their parents.
C. The need to meet more people. D. The burden of living independently.
13. What does the author think of being a good friend in the age of social media?
A. Exciting. B. Challenging. C. Money-saving. D. Risk-taking.
14. What should be changed according to the last paragraph?
A. The qualities of being a teen friend.
B. The conflicts between schools and parents.
C. The relations between parents and their teens.
D. The influences of social media on teen friendship.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why more teens are addicted to social media
B. How teens nowadays gain long-standing friendships
C. How social media has made teen friendships more stressful
D. What makes teens become more sensitive to their peers’ needs

Sharing New Year with Strangers
I come from a large multicultural family, spread out across the globe. Despite being found in distant corners of the world, we’re a tight-knit family that makes an effort to stay close and keep in touch. New Year has always been a special time for us and a chance for us all to come together, no matter where in the world we might be.
My aunt Samantha, known affectionately by everyone in the family as Mantha, loved New Year and always went out of her way to make it cosy and magical for everyone around her. Mantha was kind, fun and full of energy so it wasn’t hard to get into the New Year spirit when she was around.
This year was no exception. Mantha drove three hours from her house in Bournemouth to visit everyone two weeks before New Year and to drop off presents to her friends still in the area. We chatted merrily about our plans, laughed at how organized Mantha was — presents already bought and wrapped and the freezer full ahead of the big day — and kissed goodbye when it was time to leave. So just several days before New Year, when Mantha’s son called us saying Samantha had passed away suddenly at home, none of us could quite believe it. I’d only been messaging her the day before, sharing voice notes like we always liked to do.
Mantha had had a blood clot (血块) that had unfortunately travelled to her lung and despite the paramedic’s best efforts, they were unable to save my beloved, fun, wonderful aunt.
So close to New Year, none of us felt like celebrating and we decided we’d have a quiet day at home, surrounded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law, Vera, told us about some colleagues of hers who’d just arrived in the UK far away from friends and family. And they were eager to experience a proper English New Year.

【4题详解】
细节理解题。从第三段“Yang Lizhou, then the museum’s vice director, recalled that when Peter Ludwig visited China to discuss about donation, he was not very determined but said “YES” after Yang told him that one quarter of the world’s population would support and remember him for his generosity.”(当时的博物馆副馆长杨立州回忆说,当彼得·路德维希访问中国讨论捐赠问题时,他并不是很坚定,但在杨鼓励他,世界上四分之一的人口会支持并记住他的慷慨后,他答应了捐赠)可知,杨的鼓励使彼得最终决定捐赠他的收藏。故选A。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The museum has toured the Ludwig collection in many cities over the past two decades, broadening people’s vision of fine arts.”(在过去的二十年里,博物馆在许多城市展出了路德维希的藏品,拓宽了人们对美术的视野。)可知,这对德国夫妇的捐赠拓宽了中国人的艺术视野,提升了对艺术的鉴赏和理解,故选C。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。从前文“The painting expressed fascinations of love and the burden it brings by merging the images of a woman and a man, where they seem physically independent while bound by scarfs reluctantly ”(这幅画融合了一个女人和一个男人的形象,表现了爱情的魅力和它带来的负担,他们似乎身体上独立,但被围巾勉强束缚。)可知,他们似乎身体上独立,但被围巾束缚,这使男人看起来很沮丧。可知划线单词dejected的意思为“不高兴的,沮丧的”,故选A。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段 “In November 1996, the National Art Museum of China received a donation of 117 paintings, sculptures and installations made after 1970 by European and US artists.”(1996年11月,中国美术馆收到了117件欧美艺术家1970年以后的绘画、雕塑和装置作品的捐赠。)以及第二段“The donation was made by German collectors Irene and Peter Ludwig. The couple traveled in many Chinese cities in the 1980s and 1990s, witnessing what was happening following the country’s reform and opening- up.”(这笔捐款是由德国收藏家艾琳和彼得·路德维希捐赠的。

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

Paragraph 2:
When the day finally came, we welcomed them into our house.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Hearing this, we were in a dilemma. We were still immersed in enormous grief of aunt Mantha’s passing away. However, it was cruel to decline the burning anticipation of Vera’s colleagues. Just when we didn’t know what to do, Mantha’s kind smile popped into my head. I realized Mantha would have wanted us to open our doors and give them a cosy and magical New Year to remember, just like she did to everyone before. At the last minute, we dashed around shops, adding to the trolly presents, extra bottles of drinks and snacks.
When the day finally came, we welcomed them into our house. To give our new guests the full New Year experience, we tried hard to put our pain aside. We opened presents together, ate a fancy dinner and played wonderful games. All these didn’t ease the pain of Mantha’s absence but connecting with strangers and sharing our culture helped us get through the day. The first New Year without Mantha was difficult but it took on a deeper, more special meaning. It came from being together, putting aside our differences and showing one another love.
