African elephants can now be counted from space, using high resolution
images(高清图像). The researchers say the new technology can be used to
protect the animals better.
The researchers used satellites(卫星) 372 miles above the earth to take
some of the highest resolution images. They then made a computer program that
could identify(识别) elephants within the images. Dr. Olga Isupova, from the
University of Bath, told the BBC, “We could
32
train the machine to see small details that we wouldn’t be able to pick up with
our eyes.”
Usual ways of counting elephants are to fly above them in the planes or get
humans to count the animals on satellite images. This can be difficult, because
elephants are hard to be seen when they are among trees or tall grass. It takes a
long time and mistakes can be made. The new technology means elephants can
be counted more correctly and the work is much faster. The computers can do the
same amount of counting in a few hours by the new technology instead of
humans’ monthly work.
Clouds still are a challenge, because they can block(遮挡) the satellites’ view.
Luckily though, most places where the elephants live do not have much cloud.
The researchers say the new technology can help to save elephant populations
from being hunted, because it is easier to find where the elephants are and so
plans can be made to protect them.
56.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to? ___
A. The elephants. B. The images.
C. The satellites. D. The researchers.
57.How does the writer organize Paragraph 3? ___
A. By giving examples. B. By comparing facts.
C. By listing numbers. D. By telling stories.

Laura Molles has spent most of her time studying a little-known area of
science:bird dialects(方言). While some birds are born singers, many need to
be taught how to sing by adults just like humans. Those birds, known as “true
song birds”, can develop dialects, meaning their songs sound a little different
depending on where they live.
Just as speaking the local language can make it easier for humans to fit in,
speaking the local bird dialect can increase a bird’s chances of finding a partner.
38
And just as human dialects can sometimes disappear as the countries around the
world become closer, bird dialects can be shaped or lost as cities grow. The
similarities(相似点) between human language and bird dialects are noticed
by Molles and other bird dialect experts. Donald Kroodsma, one of the experts,
said, “There are great similarities, such as culture and oral traditions.”
For centuries, birds’ singing has been an inspiration to poets and musicians.
However, scientists started paying attention to bird dialects in the 1950s.
In the 1960s and 1970s, they separated baby birds from the adults to see if they
would be able to sing their songs. Scientists found some birds couldn’t sing
while for others, singing was innate(先天的). In other words, they could sing
when they were born.
Scientists also discovered that when birds were copying adults, they
sometimes made mistakes. Those mistakes in turn were copied by other birds,
and a local dialect developed. It meant that dialects could only exist(存在)
in “true song birds” because they had a “learned oral tradition”.
61.What are the sounds of the birds’ singing mainly influenced by? ___
A. Bird dialect experts. B. The changing seasons.
C. Centuries-old traditions. D. Their living environment.
62.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? ___
A. The development of the study on bird dialects.
B. The influence of human language on bird dialects.
C. Reasons for the disappearance of some bird dialects.
D. Similarities between human language and bird dialects.
√
√
41
63.What can be inferred(推理) from the text? ___
A. “True song birds” have their own dialects.
B. Bird dialects won’t disappear as cities grow.
C. The latest study on bird dialects started in the 1950s.
D. Donald Kroodsma is a musician who got inspiration from birds.
64.What is the text mainly about? ___
A. Why birds can sing songs. B. Bird dialects.
C. How birds communicate. D. Human languages.

How to Be a Green Student
Ladies and gentlemen, I’m glad to have the chance to give a speech about
how to be a green student.
Everyone wants to be a green student, but how to
be a green student?
In our daily life, we should save water. For example, we can take a shower
instead of taking a bath. Also, we should use cloth bags rather than plastic
bags. When we are at school, we can turn off the lights before we leave
school or when they are not in use.

If we do these things in our daily life, the earth will become a greener planet
for us to live on.
That’s all. Thanks for listening!
