They talk about the straw that broke the camel’s back, but really it should be the password that wiped out my memory bank.
I was going along fine with instant recall of my bank PIN, my mobile phone number and the date of my cousin’s birthday before I downloaded a gas station payment app for its new customer discount. It asked me to create a password. When I typed in “gas 1”, it was rejected for not being complex enough. I tried again: “IHateHearlessOilCompanies@”. But that was too long and didn’t include “at least one number”. But here is the thing: as soon as I added the fresh password into my memory, I instantly forgot all the others. My brain had hit its limit for passwords. I now know nothing.
I had entered some passwords in a notebook. Of course, I didn’t write down the actual passwords, in case it fell into the wrong hands. Instead, I masked them in a way that only a family member could figure them out. For example, I combined my bank PIN with our postal code, then added it to a list of phone numbers. It would fool even Albert Einstein.
Maybe we need a system like the one we use to remember people’s names. You know you form an association between a person’s characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George. Skinny George” in heart after meeting them. The risk is that, upon seeing him, you’ll burst out the phrase. “Skinny George” might not mind, but it’s possible “Boring Betty” will. As for remembering passwords as you change them, you could simply use the first and last letters of your favorite singer’s greatest hits, together with the year of their release.
Maybe I’ll try that one out, but only after describing the system in the notebook. Then I’ll hide it in a place so secret that I’ll never remember where it is.
24. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. He fell for a marketing trick. B. He was driven mad by passwords.
C. He had a serious memory disorder. D. He was rejected by the gas station.
25. By mentioning Albert Einstein in paragraph 3, what does the author mean to do?
A. To advertise a more scientific password system. B. To fool the intelligent scientist in his way.
C. To prove the uselessness of his passwords. D. To show how safe his passwords were.
26. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To encourage readers to use password notebooks.
B. To recommend a password-remembering method.
C. To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.
D. To highlight the importance of using complex passwords.
27. How does the author sound in this passage?
A. Humorous. B. Indifferent. C. Serious. D. Absurd.

Let’s face it: we are influenced by AI algorithms (算法) when surfing the Internet on a daily basis.
If you think about it, almost anything you can possibly click on over the Internet wants to influence you in some way. Even if it’s not an advertisement and the goal isn’t literally to sell you a product or service, it wants to influence you somehow, whether it’s getting you to think something, feel something, or do something.
Behind every blogger, YouTube personality, and social media influencer, there are the companies that own the platforms these bloggers and influencers use: YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Instagram, and the rest. Generally speaking, the goal of these platforms is to keep users on them as often as possible for as long as possible and this increases the likelihood of those users clicking on targeted ads.
These platforms use the users’ data to serve the content most likely to arouse their emotions and keep them engaged. The kind of content that’s effective at keeping people engaged often happens to be emotionally charged: sensational (轰动的), controversial, or misinformative. Unfortunately, due to its massive computing power, AI is very good at understanding your psychology (often better than you do) and, therefore, using content that is most likely to “push your buttons”.
Obviously, AI itself has no emotions. It doesn’t “want” to influence you or to have power over you, but it does simply because, in the context of the Internet, that’s what it’s been programmed to do. The people who use AI as their tools are simply trying to accomplish the goal of any platform or company, which is to be profitable.
In a previous post, I wrote about being data literate. Well, the first step towards protecting yourself against AI’s influence is to be conscious of the fact that we live in an attention economy in which much of the business occurs between companies that want your attention and the content platforms that provide it to them.
28. What message does the author try to convey about social media in paragraph 3?
A. It is developing rapidly. B. It is trying to control us.
C. It enjoys great popularity. D. It offers us a variety of choices.
29. What kind of content do the social media platforms favour most?
A. The content that causes emotional reactions. B. The content that creates value for users.
C. The content that spreads positive energy. D. The content that makes users feel satisfied.
30. Which of the following may be to blame according to the author?
A. AI algorithms. B. Content creators. C. Social media users. D. Social media platforms.
31. What will the author probably talk about in the paragraph that follows?
A. How social media platforms work. B. How AI algorithms are influencing us.
C. Some measures to protect ourselves. D. Some negative effects of AI algorithms.
D
During a judging period for a recent short story contest, I started thinking a lot about dialogue tags. Because in many submissions characters didn’t “say” a thing. They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one “said” anything. And I started wondering why.
The more I thought about it, the more I understood the temptation. We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose. Why walk when you can skip or wander? Why cry when you can sob or weep? Why wouldn’t we reach for exciting verbs instead of dull “said”? Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its own right? The problem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting to become something more than the sum of its parts. Without something to provide structure, a collection of the world’s most glorious diamonds would still only amount to a heap of rocks.
Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting — we can sense it in the way they spit out words, clench fists, or storm from the room. What’s more, readers may not initially imagine a particular line being “sobbed.” When we reach the end of a sentence and find out our leading lady has actually sobbed instead of whispered, it pulls us right out of the story. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust our understanding and begin again. But that wonderful momentum when we’re fully immersed in the scene, holding our breath to find out what our heroine says next, is lost.
Creating a successful work of fiction is about giving the reader all the materials they need to build your fictional world in their mind. Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic characters who speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.
32. What do we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. The word “said” is overused in our stories.
B. The use of exciting verbs makes characters alive.
C. Varieties of verbs are preferred by judges at contests.
D. Strong verbs are considered to be an eye-catcher.
33. According to the author, ______ contributes most to a good story.
A. a talkative character B. a vivid conversation
C. a collection of dialogue tags D. a wild imagination
34. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Creative dialogue tags help keep readers immersed in reading.
B. What was said should be prioritised over how it was said.
C. Readers may better understand a scene after rereading the line.
D. The more materials a work of fiction contains, the more successful it is.
35. What argumentative methods are used in this article?
① Using examples ② Justifying an assumption
③ Comparing and contrasting ④ Appealing to readers’ emotions
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ①③

There is little, it seems, that people won’t do for their pets. Americans spent $186bn on them last year, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, covering everything from food and vet visits to toys and grooming. That is more than they spent on childcare.
____36____ Mars, a company best known for its chocolate bars, made two-thirds of its revenue last year from pet care. Nestle and Colgate, two other consumer-products giants, also make around a fifth of their revenue from their pet market.
Spending on pets rocketed through the COVID-19 pandemic. ____37____ Between 2019 and 2023, pet spending grew by a compound annual rate of 11%, in nominal terms, compared with 6% for consumer spending overall and 5% for pet spending over the preceding decade. ____38____
Unlike virtual yoga classes or meal-kit subscriptions, animals weren’t easy to drop once lockdowns ended. Morgan Stanley, a bank, estimates pet spending in America, compared with other personal expenses, will grow by 2.5% this year. ____39____ The pet business proved similarly strong during the global financial crisis of 2007-2009.
And analysts hold the pet business will soon go viral again. Morgan Stanley forecasts that annual spending will rise to around $260bn by 2030, consistent with its pre-pandemic growth trend. ____40____ Owners increasingly see themselves as parents, not masters. “Pets have gone from the backyard to the living room to the bedroom,” says Loic Moutault, head of the pet division at Mars.

C. Owners are now giving their pets yummier food.

The antique clock chimed seven as Emily stared at the untouched dinner. Her mother’s lab coat hung limply on the chair, the embroidered name “Dr. Sarah Miller” barely visible under the dim light. This was the third consecutive night her mother had missed their family dinner.
Fingering the faded keychain her father had left before the divorce, Emily’s gaze drifted to the framed photo on the mantelpiece — a smiling trio at Disneyland, frozen in happier times. The sound of the garage door opening made her stiffen. Heavy footsteps approached, accompanied by the rustle of medical reports.
“Sweetheart, I...” Her mother’s voice cracked with exhaustion. Emily abruptly stood, the chair screeching against the hardwood floor. “Save your speeches for your patients.” She fled upstairs, leaving a trail of shattered porcelain from the hastily packed moving box.
The grandfather clock tolled mournfully. Outside, rain began pelting the windowpanes like angry tears.

You know, you form an association between a person’s characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George.

A. The content that causes emotional reactions. B. The content that creates value for users.

30 Which of the following may be to blame according to the author?
A. AI algorithms. B. Content creators. C. Social media users. D. Social media platforms.
31. What will the author probably talk about in the paragraph that follows?
A. How social media platforms work. B. How AI algorithms are influencing us.

根据第三段“Behind every blogger, YouTube personality, and social media influencer, there are the companies that own the platforms these bloggers and influencers use: YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Instagram, and the rest. Generally speaking, the goal of these platforms is to keep users on them as often as possible for as long as possible and this increases the likelihood of those users clicking on targeted ads.(在每个博主、YouTube名人和社交媒体影响者的背后,都有拥有这些博主和影响者使用的平台的公司:YouTube、Meta、TikTok、Instagram等。
根据倒数第二段“Obviously, AI itself has no emotions. It doesn’t “want” to influence you or to have power over you, but it does simply because, in the context of the Internet, that’s what it’s been programmed to do. The people who use AI as their tools are simply trying to accomplish the goal of any platform or company, which is to be profitable.(显然,人工智能本身没有情感。它并不“想要”影响你或对你有权力,但它这样做只是因为,在互联网的背景下,这就是它被编程的目的。使用人工智能作为工具的人只是试图实现任何平台或公司的目标,即盈利)”可知,作者认为,人工智能本身没有情感,也无意影响我们或者调动我们的情绪,真正试图操控和影响我们的是社交媒体平台以及背后的公司,且第三段中“Behind every blogger, YouTube personality, and social media influencer, there are the companies that own the platforms these bloggers and influencers use: YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Instagram, and the rest.(在每个博主、YouTube名人和社交媒体影响者的背后,都有拥有这些博主和影响者使用的平台的公司:YouTube、Meta、TikTok、Instagram等)”也指出,社交媒体平台的上的内容生产者也是被平台操控的。
最后一段中“Well, the first step towards protecting yourself against AI’s influence is to be conscious of the fact that we live in an attention economy in which much of the business occurs between companies that want your attention and the content platforms that provide it to them.(保护自己不受人工智能影响的第一步是要意识到这样一个事实,即我们生活在一个注意力经济中,在这个经济中,许多业务发生在想要你关注的公司和为他们提供关注的内容平台之间)”谈到如何保护自己不受人工智能影响。
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ①③
D 33. B 34. B 35. A
根据文章第二段内容“We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose.(我们总是被鼓励在我们的文章中使用强烈的、可操作的动词)”以及“Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its own right?(为什么每个动词本身就不能成为一颗闪闪发光的小宝石呢?)”
根据文章第三段内容“Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it.(对话就是你的钻石,朋友们。当我们阅读你的作品时,你的对话应该栩栩如生,让我们的大脑“听到”每一行,而不仅仅是阅读它)”可知,在作者看来,对话就是钻石,栩栩如生的对话会让读者“听到”每一行。因此,在作者看来,生动的谈话对一个好故事的贡献最大。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章末尾段内容“Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic characters who speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.(读者需要可信的对话。如果你创造了动态的人物,他们说的话我们真的能听到,你就不需要告诉我们是怎么说的)”可知,在作者看来,有了可信的对话,动态的人物,就不需要告诉读者“怎么说的”这个动作了,即,说的话要比如何说更重要。由此推知,作者应该会认同选项B“What was said should be prioritised over how it was said.(说话的内容应该优先于说话的方式)”的论述。
根据文章第一段内容“They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one ‘said’ anything.(他们叫喊着,他们询问着,他们猜想着。一些人尖叫,另一些人喃喃自语。但是没有人“说”什么)”可知,作者举例了投稿中的使用的与“说”表达相同含义的其它强烈动词。同时,作者在第三段提出了论点“Dialogue is your diamond, friends.(对话就是你的钻石,朋友们)”,并用“When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting…(当我们阅读你的作品时,你的对话应该栩栩如生,让我们的大脑“听到”每一行,而不仅仅是阅读它。我们不需要被告知角色在大喊大叫……)”的论述,证明了其合理性和正确性。由此推知,作者使用了举例论证和证明假设是正确的论述方法。故选A项。

Paragraph 1:
The storm outside mirrored the tempest in Emily’s heart, as she rummaged through the half-packed suitcase. Her trembling fingers closed around the Disneyland photo frame, its glass surface webbed with cracks resembling the fractures in their relationship. A sudden clap of thunder coincided with the discovery of her mother’s journal nestled beneath sweaters. Pages fell open to an entry dated precisely three years prior — the day her father had walked out. “Emily blames me for his departure,” the elegant script confessed, “but how could I explain his infidelity to a twelve-year-old?” Rain blurred the ink as realization dawned: those late nights were escapes from grief, not neglect. Downstairs, the faint sound of suppressed sobs pierced through the roaring tempest.
Paragraph 2:
Dawn’s first light found Emily hesitating outside her mother’s study, steaming chamomile tea in hand. The door stood ajar, revealing Sarah asleep at her desk, cheek pressed against an open pediatric case file. Emily’s breath caught at the sight of the keychain — twin to hers — dangling from her mother’s stethoscope. As she draped a blanket over Sarah’s shoulders, the woman stirred, eyes red-rimmed but soft. “I thought you’d gone to your dad’s.” Emily’s throat tightened. “This is home.” Their embrace sent the keychains chiming, a fragile harmony rising with the morning sun.
