八、作文(满分20分)
Dear Eric,
I’m glad to hear you are coming to China as an exchange student. I’d like to tell you something about manners in China.
When greeting people, shaking hands is a common practice. When going to a party, it’s important to arrive on time and maintain a pleasant conversation. There are many manners at the dinner table, such as using the correct things and not sticking your chopsticks upright in your rice. Other ways to demonstrate politeness include respecting elders, offering seats to those in need, and always saying “thank you” when necessary. These are just a few examples of the rich etiquette culture in China. I’m sure that you’ll learn more as you immerse yourself in our culture.
I hope these tips will be helpful to you. I’m looking forward to meeting you in China.
Best wishes,
Zhao Hui

Hand gestures mean different things in different countries. Some gestures may even get you in trouble in foreign countries if you don’t know them well. So maybe it is best to keep your hands in your pockets when travelling.
People in most countries such as Canada and the USA use a thumbs-up (翘拇指) to agree about something. But it may be unfriendly in some countries and shouldn’t be used at all in Iran, Iraq and Thailand.
What does making a circle with your thumb and index finger (食指) mean? In many countries, it means OK. That is not the only meaning, it usually means “zero” rather than OK in Australia. And in Japan, it usually means money.
Don’t try to call someone to you by using this gesture of your index finger. It may mean “come here” in the USA.But it is an unfriendly hand gesture in most parts of the world. There are places where this could even get you in trouble!
You have to worry about the “V” for the winning sign. If you use it, you should keep your palm (手掌) facing away from you. If you turn your palm towards you, you’ll be thought to be unfriendly.
There are many kinds of hand gestures, here are some we usually use.
26.A thumbs-up is an unfriendly gesture in ________.
A.Canada B.Japan C.Thailand D.the USA
27.Making a circle with your thumb and index finger usually means ________ in Australia.
A.OK B.zero C.money D.come here

Cooking is a very important life skill. Not all of us are talented cooks, but with the right training we can learn how to prepare healthy and tasty meals. The Little Kitchen Academy (小厨房学院) can teach young children how to cook by themselves.
In a three-hour class, children learn real-life cooking skills and something about nutrition (营养学). “They’re learning to know where their food comes from, what their food can do for them and how to create healthier eating habits to last a lifetime,” said Brian Curin, CEO of the Little Kitchen Academy.
“When we look at childhood obesity (肥胖) when we look at the unhealthy eating habits and their relationship with food, we realized this was something really necessary,” said Curin.
Health always matters, but another important purpose of the class is to show the kids they can be independent. “It’s probably the first time that they have done an activity without their parents’ help,” said Avery Fletcher, director (董事) of the Little Kitchen Academy. “And to really see them make their own choices, discover their interests, try something new and succeed is really encouraging.”
Right now there are classes only available for children from 3 to 18. There are plans to open the Little Kitchen Academy in even more places.

China’s biggest solar-powered drone (太阳能无人机), Qimingxing-50 or Morning Star 50,finished its first test flight in September, 2022. The drone was built by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC 中国航空工业集团有限公司).
Drones have been used for quite a few years now. There are different ways of increasing the flying time. However, all these methods become less useful compared with the unlimited (无限的) power provided by the sun. That’s why researchers have been working to make solar-powered drones that can not only stay in the air for longer but also perform more tasks while in the sky.
In 2018, China tested the first version (版本) of Morning Star, which was 91 feet wide. Made from a special kind of plastic, the drone was so light, weighing only 41 pounds. Compared with it, the Morning Star 50 is much larger and has a wingspan (翼展) of 164 feet.
On September 3, Morning Star 50 took off from an airport in Yulin City in Shaanxi Province in northwest China and landed back 26 minutes later after a smooth flight. Staff told some local reporters that all flight systems worked normally. This is a good start for future flights of the solar-powered drone that could last for many days or even months at a time.
In the US, Airbus has been testing the Zephyr solar-powered drones for the past few years. Its latest version, the Zephyr S, came close to breaking the record for the longest flight. It stayed in the air for 64 days. Unluckily, the drone fell onto the ground only a few hours before it would have set a new record.
33.Which one is an advantage of solar-powered drones researchers want?
A.They’re cheaper than others. B.They can fly in bad weather.
C.They fly at a higher speed. D.They can stay in the air for longer.
34.What made the first version of Morning Star light?
A.Its look. B.Its material. C.The power it uses. D.The tasks it performs.
35.What did the staff think of the Morning Star 50’s test flight?
A.It was simple. B.It was successful. C.It was unexpected. D.It was dangerous.
36.What can we know about Zephyr S?
A.It failed to land smoothly. B.It flew for only a few hours.
C.It set a new record in the US. D.It had been tested for many years.
D
When the four questions — Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? And where am I going? — came into my head, I was standing on a small soccer field last week. It was my first time playing the game, but I knew nothing about it. I am not a soccer fan, and every time I watch a match, I fall asleep within 10 minutes, without exception.
Before I went to The Other Green’s salon — a women-themed bookstore in Beijing — last month, playing soccer never would have appeared on my to-do list. I usually do yoga and swim, which are good exercises for women in my eyes, while soccer is for men.
Things started to change when I went into the bookstore and met five members of a female soccer club. They look great, with sunny smiles and athletic bodies. And their confidence impressed me when they talked about how soccer has changed their lives.
It was not easy for women to find a training club to play soccer years ago in Beijing. However, things are getting much better now. I got an invitation from a friend, saying that a club is offering women’s soccer training courses. And that was certainly a yes for me. Being a working mother for seven years, my life has been limited to the office and home, and when I heard about the benefits that it brings, I hoped soccer could make a difference in my life.
This is where the story starts. After an hour of warm-up exercises, here came the match time. Without understanding the basic rules of the game, there I was, trying to shoot twice, missed both times and hurt my right leg. I still feel the pain. But I also feel that, for me, happiness is real on the field. Soccer is more than just a game for men.
37.The four questions in Paragraph 1 aim to ________.
A.make us interested in soccer B.show “I” knew nothing about soccer at first.
C.make us think further about women's soccer D.discuss what soccer is for women
38.________ changed “my” ideas about playing soccer.
A.Soccer matches on the TV B.Books in the women-themed bookstore
C.The invitation from a friend D.The five women from a soccer club
39.Which question is answered in the passage?
A.Where did “I” come from?
B.Where was “my” first soccer match held?
C.How much did I know about soccer rules when I first played?
D.How did soccer change lives of the women I met in the bookstore?
40.What can we infer from the passage?
A.“I” tried to watch soccer games carefully to learn about it.
B.Though “I” got hurt, “I” played very well in my first soccer game.
C.“I” expect to become healthier and more confident by playing soccer.
D.The invitation “I” got was from the first women's soccer club in Beijing.
四、信息还原(共5小题,每道题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺连贯,其中有两项是多余选项。
Around the world, people have different ideas about what good manners are.
When you go to restaurants in different parts of the world, it’s important to know the right and wrong things to do. 41 In fact, if a restaurant is not noisy and lively, you may think there is something wrong with it. However, in many Western countries, restaurants are quiet places. 42
Paying the bill is also different from country to country. 43 In Western countries, one person pays if he or she is entertaining clients (宴请宾客). When friends get together, they usually share the cost. This is “going Dutch”. Also, when Westerners pay the bill, they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called “leaving a tip”. 44 In the US, it is common to leave tips of 10%, 15%, or 20% of the bill. It is decided by how good the service is. Good waiters can make a lot of money!
The way people eat food is different all over the world. 45 Chinese and Indian food, for example, are popular all over the world.
A.Leaving a tip is thought to be polite.
B.They have different greeting cultures from others.
C.In China, one person usually pays for everyone at dinner.
D.However, you can find the same kind of food in many countries.
E.For example, in China, it is OK to make some noise in a restaurant.
F.If a table is too loud, other people there might even complain to the owner.
五、综合填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,在短文空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。将所填答案填写在相应题号的横线上。
It’s a hot summer day. An ant is very thirsty and she is searching for some water. After walking around for some time, she finds a river without 46 (pollute). She comes near the river, then she climbs up on a small rock to drink water. It’s likely to be 47 (success). Suddenly she falls into the river.
Two doves 48 (sit) on a branch of the tree for the whole morning. They see the ant falling into the river. They find the ant is 49 (able) to swim and make up their minds 50 (help) her. They quickly pick leaves and drop one of them into the water near the ant. The ant moves to the leaf and climbs up onto it. The leaf takes the ant to the dry ground. They save the ant 51 (wise).
Later in the afternoon, a bird catcher nearby wants to throw a net over two doves. The ant sees him and knows he 52 (catch) the doves. However, the two doves 53 (rest) in the tree and have no idea about the bird catcher. She hasn’t forgotten that the doves 54 (save) her in the morning, so when the bird catcher 55 (throw) the net, the ant quickly bites his foot. Feeling the pain, the bird catcher shouts at once. The doves hear it and quickly fly away.
So remember: If you do good, good will come to you sometime in the future.

七、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Do you ever feel like you are just rushing from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, maybe you can’t understand clearly what you are doing or learning, so it is important to stop yourself to think about what you have been doing or learning.
Self-reflection(反省)means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. Some people like to do self-reflection only in their minds. Others keep a diary. What’s more, taking notes is also OK. Each method (方法)works. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.
First, choose the right time to do it. School textbooks are made up of units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you finish a unit of study. Sometimes you know it’s the time because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit.
Finally, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a maths problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working on the same topic.
Successful students always know that self-reflection is important. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.

67.How many steps can we follow to do self-reflection?

China’s biggest solar-powered drone (太阳能无人机), Qimingxing-50 or Morning Star 50, finished its first test flight in September, 2022.

Dear Eric,
I’m glad to hear you are coming to China as an exchange student.

66.What is self-reflection?
67.How many steps can we follow to do self-reflection?
68.Why do we need to write down the questions we are not sure of?
69.What do successful students think of self-reflection?
