How is electricity made?
Electricity is made in power stations. Different power stations use different energy sources. Let’s look at three common types:
1. Coal-fired power stations: These burn coal to heat water and make steam. The steam drives a turbine connected to a generator, and the generator produces electricity.
2. Hydroelectric power stations: They use the energy of falling water. Water is stored in a dam. When it flows down, it turns the turbines to make electricity.
3. Wind power stations: Wind turbines are tall towers with blades. When the wind blows, the blades turn the turbines, and the turbines produce electricity.
However, coal and oil are non-renewable. They cause pollution and will run out. So more and more countries are using renewable energy like solar, wind and water power. These sources are clean and will never run out.
1. Where is electricity made?
2. How do hydroelectric power stations produce electricity?
3. What problem do coal and oil have?
4. Why are renewable energy sources better?
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
