It started innocently enough, as most things do. My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner. As a 45-year-old mother, I am not a physical person at all. But I still decided to join him in a training class. The first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground, I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body trembled with adrenaline (肾上腺素), as I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, but I had accomplished it.
Four months into my climbing journey, I had an accident while bouldering (攀岩). I’m not sure what exactly happened, but I believe, my foot missed a hold on the way down. I didn’t land properly and injured my lower back. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I feared that I would never return to rock climbing or bouldering and said to Nick sadly, “A piece of me would slip away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever. I couldn’t let that happen.”
It took nearly three months before I felt strong enough to give it another try. Nick was supportive throughout the process. I made it halfway up, but then panic set in. I felt like I had let myself and Nick down. He reassured me, telling me not to worry, to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready. Fifteen minutes later, I chose a different path. I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time. Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.
Rock climbing was doing wonders for me. It has not only enhanced my physical and mental strength but also implanted in me a newfound sense of confidence. Moreover, it serves as an excellent opportunity for Nick and me to strengthen our bond, while encouraging me to explore more possibilities, embodying the spirit of pushing myself to the limits.
4. Why did the author join rock climbing at first?
A. To improve her physical condition. B. To step out of comfort zone.
C. To keep her son company. D. To seek adventure and enjoyment.
5. The author’s words to her son in paragraph 2 imply that _______.
A. she feared losing self-identity gained from climbing

C. she was concerned about disconnecting with Nick
D. she was eager to demonstrate her physical capabilities
6. What was the key to the author’s successful try after recovery?
A. Her experience. B. Her passion. C. Doctors’ encouragement. D. Nick’s backing.
7. What is the main message conveyed by the author through her rock climbing experience?
A Parental support is crucial in achieving one’s goals.
B. Persistence is the key to conquering fears in extreme sports.
C Overcoming physical limitations leads to personal fulfillment.
D. Embracing challenges fosters both self-growth and family bonds.
C
Artificial intelligence-enabled voice cloning tools have made it easier for criminals to imitate strangers’ voices and trick victims into handing over large sums of money.
For example, a scammer might target a victim posing as their grandchild and claiming they require cash fast. Older people who might not be familiar with new technologies such as AI can be particularly subject to these types of scams, particularly when the caller on the other line sounds identical to a loved one.
In 2023, senior citizens were cheated out of roughly $3.4 billion in a range of financial crimes, according to the FBI data. The agency recently warned that AI has increased the “believability” or criminal scams by assisting with content creation and correcting human errors that might otherwise serve as warning signs of a trick.
“So much of the fraud (欺诈)is based on psychology,” Chuck Herrin, field chief information security officer for F5, a security and fraud prevention firm, told CBS MoneyWatch. “They say things that bring about a fear-based emotional response because they know when humans get afraid, we get stupid and don’t exercise the best judgement.”
Cybersecurity experts have a simple but effective recommendation for avoiding getting victimized by such scams: creating a family “safe word” to verify a family member or loved one’s identity. That means choosing a word or phrase that can’t be easily guessed.
“It needs to be unique and should be something that’s difficult to guess,” James Scobey, chief information security officer at Keeper Security, told CBS MoneyWatch. “It shouldn’t be something that can be researched online about you or your family. Avoid street names, towns, phone numbers and individual names as part of a pass phrase.” A safe phrase, consisting of at least four words, offers a greater degree of security, he added.
Using a safe word is a good first line of defense against scammers. So, any time you are asked for financial assistance, always ask for the safe word before transferring any money.
8. What is the threat posed by AI-enabled voice cloning tools?
A. They help strangers create fake identities.
B. They trick victims into giving away money.
C. They increase the believability of a grandchild.
D. They prevent victims from recovering lost funds.
9. What is the psychological strategy used in fraud?
A. Inspiring physical response.
B. Assisting with content creation.
C. Using fright to cause poor judgement.
D. Interrupting the decision-making process.
10. What does the underlined word “verify” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Expose. B. Confirm. C. Suggest. D. Represent.
11. What is recommended when creating a safe phrase?
A. It should be shared with new friends.
B. It should be the same for every family member.
C. It should be easily recalled by family members.
D. It should avoid using personal details found online.
D
Here’s an all-too-familiar situation: You excitedly packed for your beach trip. Luckily, you remembered all the necessities: socks, underwear, a phone charger and your passport, etc. But upon arrival, you realized you forgot to bring your toothbrush. In a new study, researchers suggest offloading important to-do items — for example, by setting reminders on your phone — could clear brain space to better remember the little things, like your toothbrush.
To prove this, the researchers developed a memory task to be played on a touch screen computer. The test was undertaken by 158 volunteers aged between 18 and 71. They were shown 12 numbered circles on the screen, and had to remember to drag some of these to the left and some to the right. The number of circles that they remembered to drag to the correct side decided their rewards at the end of the experiment. One side was “high value’, meaning that remembering to drag a circle to this side was worth 10 times as much money as remembering to drag a circle to the other “low value” side.
Volunteers performed this task 16 times. They had to use their own memory to remember at half of the trials and they were allowed to set reminders on the external digital devices for the other half.
The researchers found volunteers tended to use the digital devices to store details of the high-value circles. And, when they did so, their memory for those circles was improved by 18%. “What was unexpected was that their memory for low-value circles was also improved by 27%, even in those who had never set any reminders for low-value circles,” said Sam Gilbect.
However, results also showed a potential cost to using reminders. When reminders were taken away, the volunteers remembered the low-value circles better than the high-value ones. “Far from causing digital dementia (痴呆), using a memory device can even improve our memory for information that we never saved. But we need to be careful that we back up the most important information. Otherwise, if a memory tool fails, we could be left with nothing but less important information in our own memory,” Gilbert said.
12. The situation in paragraph 1 is described to show that ______.
A. our memory is incorrect sometimes
B. our memory has a certain preference
C. our memory has an order of importance
D. our memory is likely to weaken over time
13. What can we learn about the experiment?
A. Volunteers’ performance was connected with their ages.
B. Volunteers tended to set reminders for low-value circles.
C. Volunteers were not allowed to use devices in the experiment.
D. Dragging high-value circles to the correct side would win more awards.
14. What surprised the researchers?
A. Digital devices did harm to the brain when used improperly.
B. Volunteers tended to remember low-value information better.
C. Volunteers’ memory for low-value content was improved too.
D. Volunteers tended to use digital devices for high-value information.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. We rely too much on to-do lists
B. Digital reminders are replacing human memory
C. Overuse of technology leads to digital dementia
D. Using digital reminders helps improve our memory

Winners Never Quit
There was a young boy named Jackson who had a burning desire to become a great chess player. He lived in a small town where chess was unpopular. The lack of proper coaches or training facilities nearby didn’t dampen his spirits at all, for his fascination with the game knew no bounds.
Every day after school, he would dash home eagerly and set up his old chessboard. For hours on end, he would study books borrowed from the library, his eyes scanning the pages attentively in an attempt to absorb new strategies. He practiced against himself religiously, moving the pieces back and forth, his mind deeply engaged in analyzing each move with care.
When he took part in local chess matches, he was frequently underestimated. The tournament hall was filled with noisy people. The other players, armed with better resources and professional training, laughed at his simple techniques.
In one particular tournament, as he sat at the table for his first game, he could feel the eyes on him. His opponent made quick and decisive opening moves. Jackson, though nervous, focused hard. But soon, he found himself in a difficult position as his opponent’s pieces advanced aggressively. He lost the game and was very disappointed.
In the next game, the situation was no better. His opponent’s fingers moved swiftly over the pieces, while Jackson’s hands were a bit sweaty as he tried to keep up, with his strategies easily countered (对抗). The taunts (嘲弄) of his opponents rang in his ears, but he refused to be disheartened.
During the break, he sat alone in the corner, replaying the games in his mind to identify his mistakes. Realizing the need to be more creative and bold in his move, he immersed himself deeper into analyzing of the games of the chess masters for inspiration. With every page he read and every move he analyzed, his determination grew like a burning fire.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. D

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“‘So much of the fraud is based on psychology,’ Chuck Herrin, field chief information security officer for F5, a security and fraud prevention firm, told CBS MoneyWatch. ‘They say things that bring about a fear-based emotional response because they know when humans get afraid, we get stupid and don’t exercise the best judgement.’(一家安全和防欺诈公司F5的现场首席信息安全官Chuck Herrin告诉CBS MoneyWatch:‘如此多的欺诈行为都是基于心理学的。’他们说一些会引起基于恐惧的情绪反应的话,因为他们知道,当人类感到害怕时,我们就会变傻,不能做出最好的判断。)”可知,诈骗犯使用的心理策略是利用恐惧导致人们做出错误的判断。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段的“Cybersecurity experts have a simple but effective recommendation for avoiding getting victimized by such scams: creating a family ‘safe word’ to verify a family member or loved one’s identity.(网络安全专家有一个简单但有效的建议,以避免成为此类骗局的受害者:创建一个家庭“安全词”来verify家庭成员或亲人的身份。)”可知,网络安全的建议就是创建一个家庭的“安全词”,这样做的目的是为了“确认”家庭成员或亲人的身份,故划线词意思是“确认”。故选B项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“‘It needs to be unique and should be something that’s difficult to guess,’ James Scobey, chief information security officer at Keeper Security, told CBS MoneyWatch. ‘It shouldn’t be something that can be researched online about you or your family.
A our memory is incorrect sometimes
B. our memory has a certain preference
C. our memory has an order of importance
D. our memory is likely to weaken over time
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“Here’s an all-too-familiar situation: You excitedly packed for your beach trip. Luckily, you remembered all the necessities: socks, underwear, a phone charger and your passport, etc. But upon arrival, you realized you forgot to bring your toothbrush.(这是一个再熟悉不过的场景:你兴奋地为你的海滩旅行打包行李。幸运的是,你记得所有的必需品:袜子、内衣、手机充电器和护照等。但是到了之后,你发现你忘了带牙刷)”可知,作者通过描述一个人忘记带牙刷去海滩旅行的情景,告诉我们的记忆会记得所有重要的东西,而忽略一些看似微不足道的东西。所以,这一情景是为了说明我们的记忆有一定的优先级或重要性顺序。故选C项。
13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“One side was “high value’, meaning that remembering to drag a circle to this side was worth 10 times as much money as remembering to drag a circle to the other “low value” side.(一边是“高价值”,这意味着记住把一个圆圈拖到这一边的价值是记住把一个圆圈拖到“低价值”的另一边的10倍)”可知,将高价值的圆圈拖到正确的一边将赢得更多的奖励。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“What was unexpected was that their memory for low-value circles was also improved by 27%, even in those who had never set any reminders for low-value circles(令人意想不到的是,即使是那些从未为低价值圆圈设置任何提醒的人,他们对低价值圆圈的记忆也提高了27%)”可知,使用数字设备提醒意外地提高了对低价值信息的记忆。因此,志愿者对低价值内容的记忆提高使研究人员感到惊讶。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“In a new study, researchers suggest offloading important to-do items — for example, by setting reminders on your phone — could clear brain space to better remember the little things, like your toothbrush.(在一项新的研究中,研究人员建议放下重要的待办事项——例如,在手机上设置提醒——可以腾出大脑空间,更好地记住小事情,比如你的牙刷)”和下文内容可知,文章介绍了通过使用数字设备提醒,人们可以更好地记住重要事项,并且甚至可以更好地记住小事情,所以“Using digital reminders helps improve our memory(使用电子提醒有助于提高我们的记忆力)”是文章最佳标题。故选D项。

【答案】范文
With a new-found determination, Jack told himself that winners never quit. He came back with a determined look. In the next game, he started to make unexpected and brilliant opening moves. His opponents were caught off guard. He carefully calculated each step, not allowing his previous failures to cloud his judgment. When his opponent made a challenging move, instead of panicking, he analyzed it calmly and found a way to counter it. His pieces moved across the board with precision, slowly but surely gaining an advantage. As the game progressed, he stayed focused, ignoring the whispers around him.
In the final moments of the game, the pressure was intense. Jack’s hands were steady as he made the decisive move. He won the game, and a small smile appeared on his face. This victory gave him the confidence he needed. In the following games, he continued to play with great skill and determination. Even when facing tough opponents again, he remembered his struggle and the motto that winners never quit. With each victory, he grew more confident, and eventually, he won the tournament, proving that with unwavering determination, one can overcome any obstacle in the pursuit of their dreams.
