A cherished childhood memory was receiving a motorbike for his 16th birthday, which he 第4页(共12) 【25·(新高考)CCJ·英语·Y】 rode to school once, impressing his classmates but not the headmaster who was stuck in the horse and buggy days.At 17,he made a car that looked like an MG,fueling a lifelong passion for cars that took him around the world to compete in races. Wagener is also proud of opening Adelaide's first motel in 1962,the Princes Highway Motel on Glen Osmond Rd,before many other roadside hotels were built. His quick humor and friendliness have made him popular with customers at Essence Cafe, who sang"happy birthday"and gave him flowers during his interview. C If you have noticed a sudden accumulation of wrinkles, aches and pains or a general sensation of having grown older almost overnight, there may be a scientific explanation. Researchers have discovered that the process of aging in humans is not as slow and steady as previously thought.Instead,it occurs in at least two accelerated (bursts, primarily at ages of 44 and 60.The study, published in the journal Nature Aging, suggests that these 第5页(共12页) 【25·(新高考)CC·英语·Y】 periods of dramatic change could explain sharp rises in certain health issues, including heart and blood vessel diseases. The research involved 108 volunteers, aged 25 to 75,who submitted blood, body waste samples, and skin, oral and nasal swabs every few months for up to seven years.Scientists analyzed over 135,000 different molecules, including RNA,proteins, and metabolites )The results showed that the abundance of most molecules did not change gradually but rather sharply when people were in their mid-40s and early 60s. The mid-40s aging surge was unexpected and was initially believed to be influenced by perimenopausal(围绝经期的)changes in women. However, further analysis revealed similar shifts in men of the same age group, suggesting that other more significant factors were at play. The first wave of changes involved molecules linked to heart and blood vessel diseases and metabolism, while the second wave included those related to immune regulation and kidney function.Molecules associated with skin and muscle aging changed at both time points. The pattern observed in the study was consistent with previous evidence showing that the risk of many age-related diseases increases sharply after critical points, such as age 60 for Alzheimer's and blood vessel diseases.Additionally, some of these changes may be linked to lifestyle or behavioral factors, like increased alcohol consumption during stressful periods in mid-life. The findings have potential implications for targeting interventions to alleviate the effects of aging. For instance, increasing exercise before and during periods of rapid muscle loss could be beneficial."We should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy,"emphasized Prof Michael Snyder, the senior author of the study. 28.What is the main finding of the study? A.Aging is a gradual and continuous process. B.People grow old dramatically at certain ages. C.The risk of age-related diseases can be wiped out. D.Health issues are concentrated in a particular period. 29.Which paragraph shows the process of the study? A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4. 30.What result of the study surprised the scientists? A.Men go through the similar changes as women of the same age do. B.Molecules related to skin and muscle aging have few changes. C.Women change more obviously than men of the same age group. D.Immune regulation and kidney function change dramatically in mid-40s. 第6页(共12页) 【25·(新高考)CC·英语·Y】 31.What does Prof Michael Snyder indicate in the last paragraph? A.Muscle loss in mid-life is unavoidable. B.Humans grow old slowly and steadily after 60. C.Early prevention can relieve the effects of aging. D.Exercise during periods of dramatic change can solve age-related problems. D A recent study done by Colorado State University has shown that elephants may be the first non-human animals to call each other by name. The wild African elephants the study looked at were found to use specific calls for individuals. These calls are the equivalent of human names. The study is still awaiting peer review but offers exciting new insight into 弥 animal communication and language. The sounds elephants produce range from loud trumpeting to infrasound that is too low to be heard by humans.Elephants also use touch, smell, and visual signals to communicate with each other.Additionally, studies have shown that elephants may use vibrations to communicate with each other over long distances. The study done by Colorado State University focused on sound. The researchers looked at the sounds produced by groups of wild African elephants in two regions. They were the elephants of the Samburu ecosystem and the Amboseli National Park. The dataset collected by the researchers looked at 625 calls. Within these 625 calls, the researchers were able to recognize 114 unique initiators,or the elephants who made the calls.Additionally, they identified 119 elephants who were receiving the calls. The study restricted the calls analyzed to those aimed at a single elephant to determine if the calls contained unique identifiers. By subjecting the data they collected to several tests, the researchers found that the 线 elephant to whom the call was referring could be identified at a rate better than chance.By playing recordings of their "names"back to them, the researchers found that the elephants were more likely to approach the speaker when they heard their"name"than when they heard control calls. This study is the first to point to non-human animals using names to refer to each other.Although researchers have long been aware of elephants'complex social dynamics, these findings add a new layer of complexity to the understanding of this species. Elephants are intelligent creatures with complex social dynamics.Sadly, they are often kept in captivity in cruel conditions. 32.How do elephants communicate over great distances? A.Using infrasound. B.Through vibrations. C.Using visual signals. D.Through loud cries. 第7(共12) 【25·(新高考)CC·英语·Y】 33.What is the purpose of paragraph 3 in the text? A.To describe the research method.
