Ted Strickroth of Riverhead was a remarkable individual who showed the spirit of helping nature. He founded the Wilderness Traveling Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated (专注于) to educating children about Native American culture and traditions. Strickroth visited schools and events, sharing the wisdom of Native Americans with eager young minds.
In 2017, Strickroth emphasized his mission to teach children that Native Americans were exceptional recyclers, though in their own unique way. He believed that while modern society recycled bottles and cans, the native peoples had developed their own recycling practices long before.
Joe Colao, a long-time friend of Strickroth, recalled that he had taught thousands of people over the years. Whenever a school district hired him to conduct a program on Native American culture, teachers and principals often recognized him from his earlier visits when they were students. Some even remembered him from their fourth-grade years.
Renato Stafford another friend, remembered Strickroth’s summer camps where he taught children survival skills and various aspects of Native American culture, such as painting, fire-making, and bow-and-arrow use. Stafford added that Strickroth was incredibly generous, always ready to help others without hesitation. During a storm that left Stafford’s family without power, Strickroth brought a generator to their house without even asking if he could help. Whatever was needed, Strickroth made sure to find a way to provide it.
Strickroth’s military background also highlighted his leadership skills and problem-solving abilities. His commanding officer praised him for being highly respected by both superiors and colleagues, and for his quick understanding and resolution of technical situations.
However, in the early 2010s, Strickroth was diagnosed with a rare cancer that could affect any tissue. Doctors recommended amputating (截断) his right arm, but as a carpenter and an educator, he wanted to keep it as long as possible. Even though he knew the cancer might spread, he was willing to accept that risk. Colao described him as one of the kindest and gentles t people he had ever met. Ted Strickroth’s dedication to education, generosity, and love for nature will forever be remembered.
4. What did Strickroth think of the ways of Native Americans?
A Eco-friendly. B. Economical. C. Profitable. D. Time-honored.

7. Why is Strickroth’s life in the army mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To show his rich life experience. B. To highlight his care and kindness.
C. To honor him as a Native American. D. To prove his ability to solve problems.

A papyrus scroll (莎草纸卷轴) that was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2.000years ago may have revealed how Plato, one of the fathers of western thought, spent his final hours.
The Greek philosopher died in about 348 BC having been a student of Socrates, the teacher of Aristotle and the founder of the first university, the Academy at Athens.
He is thought to have been 80 or 81 at the time of his death. The scroll carries a previously unknown account of how he spent his last evening listening to flute music played by a Thracian slave girl. It claims that he was unimpressed and criticized her sense of rhythm.
According to Graziano Ranocchia, a professor at the University of Pisa who led the team that recovered it, the account shows that Plato was clear-headed until the end of his life, despite suffering from attacks of fever. “Until his very last hour, he was able to express an aesthetic (审美的) judgment.” he said.
The scroll contains part of a history of the Academy by Philodemus, who lived in the first century BC. Until now, however, it had mostly been unreadable. The papyrus on which it is written was transformed into easily-broken black carbon when Vesuvius erupted in AD79, burying both Pompeii and the nearby Roman town of Herculaneum.
The scroll was recovered from a house in Herculaneum, thought to have once been owned by the father-in-law of Julius Caesar. Its black ink had been impossible to make out from the burned papyrus to which it had been applied.
Ranocchia and his colleagues managed to find out the meaning of the words on it using techniques including shortwave infrared hyper spectra (红外高光谱) imaging, which detected tiny differences in how light bounced off the ink.
8. What do we know about that scroll?
A. It was written by Plato. B. It contains the story of Plato.
C. It was ruined by volcanic ash. D. It consists of essays on aesthetics.
9. Which of the following events took place first?
A. The birth of Plato. B. The eruption of Vesuvius.
C. The death of Philodemus. D. The completion of the scroll.
10. Why was the scroll difficult to read?
A. It was burned to carbon. B. The words on it were faded.
C. It was written in old language. D. No technique could make out the words.
11. What can be the best title of this text?
A. 2000-year Old Scroll Unearthed B. More Cultural Relics Were Found
C. Plato Will Be Remembered Forever D. Scroll Reveals Plato’s Final Thought
D
Since scientists began measuring brain function, young people have scored higher than older people in IQ. Now that is changing. A study by Nottingham Trent University (NTU) has found that for the first time, the mental ability of older generations is catching up with the young.
It is happening, scientists believe, because gains in intelligence of younger generations came to a stop around 2000, yet are still climbing for older people, meaning the mental gap between the young and old is closing. Dr Stephen Badham, an associate professor in psychology at NTU’s School of Social Sciences, said: “Much existing research shows IQ has been improving globally throughout the20th century.” This means later-born generations are more cognitively (认知地) able than those born earlier.
However, there is growing evidence that time-based increases in IQ are leveling off. In the most recent decades, young adults are no more cognitively able than those born shortly before. As a result, the current data show young adult advantages in cognition relative to older adults, such as memory ability and speed of processing, are now getting smaller over time.
When we compare young and older adults today, the gap is smaller than in the past. Dr Badham carried out an analysis of 60 studies that have recorded mental ability of different generations. In 83 of the tests used, older adults showed better performance than earlier older adults. However young adults’ cognition remained relatively flat across time.
Scientists believe the phenomenon is being caused because the Flynn Effect has leveled off. The Flynn Effect states global IQ will rise steadily over time, mostly fuelled by improvements in education, diet and health. But it now appears to have come to a halt for people born at the turn of the millennium (千禧年). In contrast, those born earlier are still recording improvements compared to older people of previous generations.
12. What can we infer about later-born generations in the 20th century?
A. They would grow healthier and longer. B. They learned from their parents intellectually.
C They were more intelligent than their parents. D. They seemed to stop growing in mental ability.
13. How does Badham conduct the research?
A. By testing the participants. B. By doing series of researches.
C. By analyzing results of other studies. D. By comparing some young and old adults.
14. What improvement might lead to the Flynn Effect?
A. Education. B. Intelligence. C. Relationship. D. Environment.
15. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “halt” in the last paragraph?
A. Stop. B. Peak. C. Head. D. Point.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语编写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I wasn’t going skydiving, bungee jumping or climbing Mount Everest. What I needed to do was bigger than all those adventures put together: I was going camping. I’m an outdoorsy kind of girl, so camping wasn’t new to me, but what was new to me was camping alone.
I love the outdoors and had camped many times during my younger years. We had camped a bit when my two sons were younger, and the camping bug never left me. But camping alone? Was I as tough as I thought? What would other campers think of me? What if I got scared? What if my tent broke? Was I really cut out for this? What if…? What if…?
More and more women were camping alone, and I had always been envious of those who did. Now was my time. I had to try.
My fifty-year-old back was not meant for air mattresses anymore, and my SUV was too small to sleep in. I borrowed a tent from a friend and came up with the crazy idea to sleep on my couch cushions. I bought a burner and sleeping bag. With second-hand store finds and generous support from others, I was ready to go.
I made reservations for two nights and then immediately made a few deals with myself. If I stayed for the day and left before nightfall, that would be okay. If I stayed for one night and left the next morning, that would be okay, too. And if I stayed the two full nights, then it would be a bonus.
The big day came, and I headed out. Excitement, independence and freedom urged me on, yet uncertainty and self-doubt made me nervous during the one-hour drive to the Bamberton Provincial Park campground in Mill Bay, B. C. — far but not too far away.
As I rolled into the campground, I let out the breath I had been holding. I found my site, set up my tent with my couch cushions and sleeping bag inside. I was ready!
That first day, I hiked, read, and journalled. I had noodles cooked over my burner.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Evening came, and lanterns lit up the quickly darkening campsite.

Renato Stafford, another friend, remembered Strickroth’s summer camps where he taught children survival skills and various aspects of Native American culture, such as painting, fire-making, and bow-and-arrow use.

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. A 11. D

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“The papyrus on which it is written was transformed into easily-broken black carbon when Vesuvius erupted in AD79, burying both Pompeii and the nearby Roman town of Herculaneum.(公元79年,维苏威火山爆发,掩埋了庞贝城和附近的罗马城镇赫库兰尼姆,写这篇文章的莎草纸变成了容易破碎的黑碳)”和第六段中“Its black ink had been impossible to make out from the burned papyrus to which it had been applied.(它的黑色墨水是不可能从被烧过的莎草纸上辨认出来的)”可知,由于卷轴的纸张碳化,上面的黑色墨水无法辨认,所以无法认读。故选 A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A papyrus scroll (莎草纸卷轴) that was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2.000years ago may have revealed how Plato, one of the fathers of western thought, spent his final hours.(近两千年前维苏威火山爆发时埋在地下的一份莎草纸卷轴,可能揭示了西方思想之父之一柏拉图是如何度过生命最后的时光的)”以及本文主要讲述了一个出土卷轴中记载的故事,柏拉图在生命即将结束时仍然在发表关于审美的观点。D选项“卷轴揭示了柏拉图最后所想”最符合文章标题。故选D。

12 What can we infer about later-born generations in the 20th century?
A. They would grow healthier and longer. B. They learned from their parents intellectually.
C. They were more intelligent than their parents.
A. Stop. B. Peak. C. Head. D. Point.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. A

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Dr Badham carried out an analysis of 60 studies that have recorded mental ability of different generations.(Badham博士对60项研究进行了分析,这些研究记录了不同世代人的心理能力)”可知,Badham是通过分析60多个其他研究数据得出自己的判断的。故选C。

The rush of achievement drove me to spend the other night.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Evening came, and lanterns lit up the quickly darkening campsite. I read by the light of my little lantern. As evening became night, I got into my tent and sleeping bag. The campground quieted. In the middle of the night, I was awakened by the sound and cries of small creatures fighting at my site. I counted my heartbeats and breaths. I focused on staying calm. The creatures eventually quieted and stillness and dark settled over the campsite once more. I made it through that first night.
The rush of achievement drove me to spend the other night. The next night I was more mentally prepared and tried not to be disturbed by the sounds outside. Everything went so well. Awareness of all that I had overcome coupled with the fuel of independence kept me going. I even wished I had booked a third night. As I drove home, I planned. Could I get in one more trip before winter? I am now proud of myself and I had never felt more fearless than I did in my tent those two nights. And I did it solo.
