B Born into a wealthy family in Venice in about 1254, Marco Polo was brought to China by his father and uncle, Niccolo and Maffeo Polo, in 1275. For the next 17 years, they lived in China. But not much was known about those years until Marco Polo was involved in the war between Venice and Genoa and he was caught by the Genoese in 1298. While he was in prison, a writer named Rustic hello da Pisa wrote the stories of Marco's travels. Published as The Travels of Marco Polo, the book was wildly popular and translated into many languages. The book's unique value comes from the fact that Marco Polo was a businessman. In Chinese history, those who traveled extensively and left behind detailed travel records typically fell into two categories: religious men, such as Yijing and Xuanzang in the Tang Dynasty(618-907), and diplomats(外交官) like Zheng He(1371—1433). If you read this book, you'll notice that Marco Polo observed each place meticulously. He paid special attention to local products and often commented on which items would be profitable if sold in specific locations. It is precisely this kind of information that provides us with valuable records about ancient Chinese social and economic life. Despite Marco Polo's widespread recognition in China, the earliest Chinese version of The Travels of Marco Polo was published by the Shanghai Commercial Press in 1936. Translated by Feng Chengjun, this translation falls short of meeting modern standards of accuracy, fluency, and elegance. Feng summarized each chapter in classical Chinese. Furthermore, he relied on a French edition translated by A. J. H. Charignon that was itself not always accurate. In 2011, Rong Xinjiang, a history professor at Peking University brought together a group of experts on Chinese relations with the Silk Road countries to translate the book again. “Even the original book contains many errors because Marco Polo did not write the book himself,” said Rong. “However, the basic information remains valid(被认可的).” As for the lack of official Chinese records about the Polos, Rong explained, “They were just ‘ortoqs’ who mainly conducted business outside the court on behalf of the royal family during the Yuan Dynasty.” 24. Who wrote The Travels of Marco Polo? A. Marco Polo. B. A. J. H. Charignon. C. Niccolo Polo. D. Rustichello da Pisa. 25. What does the word “meticulously” underlined in paragraph 3 mean? A. Closely. B. Wrongly. C. Occasionally. D. Officially. 26. What can we know about the first Chinese version of The Travels of Marco Polo? A. It is filled with few mistakes. B. It is translated by a Frenchman. C. It is not a very good translation. D. It is based on the original book. 27. What can be most probably inferred from Rong Xinjiang's words? A. Marco Polo made many dishonest statements in the book. B. The Polos were not important politicians in the royal court. C. He hopes to find more official records about Marco Polo. D. His translation will fill the gaps of the Polos’ life in China. C Decades of increasing corn and soybean production have turned Brazil into an agricultural powerhouse. But it has also led to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. A study released in October by Rainforest Foundation Norway(RFN) shows how the deforestation is hurting Brazilian farmers. The report finds that the practice of clear-cutting(removing all trees from a given area) in the Brazilian Amazon has led to reduced crop yields, resulting in total economic losses of around$1 billion between 2006 and 2019. In areas where more than 80% of the forest was cleared, the start of the rainy season has been delayed by 76 days since 1980. Between 1999 and 2019,rainfall in these same areas fell by 40% in the soybean-cropping season and 23% at corn-cropping time. Maximum air temperatures increased over the same period from 30℃ to 32.5℃. The report warns that if clear-cutting continues, the farmers will be losing up to $1 billion a year by 2050. But it suggests that the trend could be slowed down once further deforestation were prevented in Brazil's Amazon. The report even indicates that if Brazil were to reforest55,000km² of farmed land, the rain could come, on average, five days earlier, and up to 19 in the most deforested areas. That would mean about 152mm more rainfall each year for the thirstiest areas. “For now, though, that seems like a pipe dream,” admits Anders Krogh, the report's lead author. “Letting alone accept the idea of reforesting the farmed land, government officials in Brazil often use the term ‘ agri-phobic’ to describe scientists who criticize the country's farming practices.” Scepticism is felt at the grassroots level, too. Despite the increasing costs of adapting to drier conditions, most Brazilian farmers deny that lower yields result from climate change or deforestation. “I think that focusing on the financial impact of deforestation, rather than abstract climate modelling, is our only hope of bringing the critics and sceptics round,” adds Anders Krogh. 28. What does the author want to show by the statistics in paragraph 2? A. The consequences of destroying the Amazon rainforest. B. The relationship between agriculture and climate change. C. The rapidly decreasing productivity of the land in Brazil. D. The worsening living conditions for the Brazilian people. 29. What might happen if 55,000km² of farmed land is reforested in Brazil? A. The annual rainfall will reach 152mm. B. Some areas are very likely to be flooded. C. The rainfall trends might be turned around. D. The dry season may be shortened by 24 days. 30. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Stopping climate change. B. Turning farms into forests. C. Getting rid of scepticism. D. Adapting to drier conditions. 31. According to Anders Krogh, what might be practical to stop forest destruction? A. Providing better climate models. B. Turning to more severe punishments. C. Silencing the sceptics by force. D. Showing the huge related profit losses. D At present, only Tesla's electric vehicle(EV) owners have access to its own supercharger network, which offers about 30,000 high-speed chargers in the US. Everyone else has to rely on much smaller and less reliable open networks such as Electrify America and EV go. However, the situation will change soon after every other EV maker in the US has agreed to switch to Tesla's technology. The switch is no small thing. The auto industry has bet heavily on the possibility that drivers will accept EVs as superior to gas-powered cars. They are cheaper to own, easier to maintain, and very convenient to be charged at home. But drivers' anxiety about charging on the road is the number one reason why demand for EVs is falling short of automakers’ expectations in the US. While other companies are slow to address that anxiety, Tesla invested heavily in its own network of high-speed chargers when it set out to make EVs, which has eventually become a “walled garden” to keep its competitors out. But for a long time, charging on the road didn't affect many people, because Tesla sold the vast majority of EVs in the US. However, as a growing number of people have been buying other brands(There are now about 1.5 million non-Tesla EVs on the road.), many of the drivers are eyeing Tesla's “walled garden” with envy. In 2023, the garden walls started to fall. First, Ford made a surprise announcement that it was adopting Tesla's charging standard. GM and other EV makers followed soon. At last, the charging war was over. “But we' re going to be living in a world of different chargers for a long time,” said Wilmer who drives a Ford F-150 Lightning with a CCS charger. “Vehicles like mine will stay on roads for 8, 10, 12 or even 15 years.” However many years it takes from now, when all the cars on the road switch to a single standard, that's going to be a better world. 32. Why are Americans slow to switch to non-Tesla EVs? A. They are still too difficult to be repaired. B. They are very expensive for most people. C. They cannot be quickly charged on roads. D. They are dangerous to be charged at home. 33. What can be learned from paragraph 3 and paragraph 4? A. Tesla sells its cars at much lower prices. B. Tesla EVs are equipped with better batteries. C. Tesla EVs have adopted unique EV technologies. D. Tesla has addressed the biggest concern in advance. 34. What does Wilmer mean? A. He doesn't care about Tesla EVs. B. Different chargers will coexist for years. C. It is very unlikely to adopt a single standard. D. He is happy with his own Ford F-150 Lightning. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Tesla Has Won the EV Charging War B. The Golden Age of EVs Will Come Soon C. Faster EV Charging Networks Have Been Built D. To address this problem, I suggest organizations establish debating clubs in every city. I believe the problem would disappear when deep thinkers become as popular as the hottest fitness influencers in our society. I know that's my fantasy, anyway. 36 . Schedule your mental workout 37 . You can use similar principles for your mental fitness. Choose a period of time each day— say, 30 minutes— that you can devote yourself to weighing tough questions of real importance. You can figure out in advance what challenges you plan to consider. Or you can use a paragraph or two from philosophy to focus your mind on a specific question, break it down, and improve your understanding. As you may find in your initial weeks at the gym, the exercise is hard at first and you might want to abandon. 38 . Go for a long walk Philosophers have long advocated this technique. Immanuel Kant was such a regular walker, to aid his deep thinking. 39 . He further suggested that it should be done ideally in the early morning. Invite boredom One effect of the current screen-centered culture is that you' re never truly bored. 40 .But it isn't. Experiencing boredom is crucial for abstract reasoning and insight. For this reason, building periods of boredom into our life really matters, because they no longer occur naturally. A good way to do this is stay alone without taking your smartphone. A. This might sound great B. In a sense, boredom is productive C. If you go to the gym, you probably do so at a planned time D. But with discipline, the habit becomes easier, and then pleasant E. We loved to play together after school and our favorite activity was flying colorful kites in the open field near a big tree in our neighborhood. One sunny Saturday, we met there to play. The wind was just right and it was a perfect day to have a competition and see whose kite could fly the highest. However, as I let my kite fly high up into the sky, it went off the course and got stuck in the branches of the tree. When I told my friends that I decided to climb up the tree to get my kite, they looked at me in disbelief. As I climbed higher and higher, they held their breath and watched under the towering tree. They were worried but also a little excited. After all, it was quite an adventure to see me climbing so high. Suddenly, I found the branch I was standing on was too slippery for me to move further. In despair, I tried to move backward and climb down. But it turned out to be an impossible task. I was stuck! My friends looked at me with wide, scared eyes. They didn't know how to help me. They just kept encouraging me and hoped that I could make it. I tried my best to move again. To make things worse, I lost my footing and fell through the branches toward the ground! I closed my eyes and tried to stay calm. Each time I fell through a branch, I tried to take hold of it. When I was falling through the last one, I finally caught it! As I hung in the air, my friends eventually recovered from their shock. They rushed under me and held out their arms to receive me. “Let go of the branch! We will catch you!” they shouted. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Although I was not very high above the ground, I did not want to let go of the branch.
