Read Smart: Tween Book Club
●$80 for 4 classes
●1 class per week, 50 minutes, 3-8 learners per class
Class Experience
As a professional author, I love talking about books with students, and I especially love urging them to dig deep and think about books beyond a simple “I liked it” or “I didn't like it”. This class seeks to engage students in meaningful discussions about books while also touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone and voice. The books selected for this course are modern reads that are less likely to strike students as “required reading”. There is so much to be learned from reading outside our “comfort zone”.
Students need to independently purchase or borrow the selected book, and should have read approximately 1/4 before our first meeting.
Arrangement
January: The Stolen Prince of Cloudburst by Jaclyn Moriarty
February: Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart

In the mid-1980s, I captained a flight from Newark to Los Angeles, a routine journey that became unforgettable when I encountered the legendary Muhammad Ali in first class. Ali, the former heavyweight champion, was returning home from a Parkinson's clinic.
Being a boxing enthusiast who had fought in college, I admired Ali very much. I described the famous fight against Floyd Patterson, where Ali's hands-down, dancing approach astonished me. Approaching Ali, I shared my admiration for his ability to strike Patterson before he could defend himself—a moment frozen in boxing history.
After I spoke, there was an awkward pause. I wasn't sure if Ali had heard me, and I was debating whether to move on or repeat myself. Then his face lit up with a smile. Apparently, the Parkinson's had caused a short circuit. The champion was standing up in front of his seat when I spoke. He put his hands up in a boxing position, starting to walk slowly back and forth.
Later, Ali's assistant invited me to first class. Our conversation shifted from boxing to our mutual love for family. I told him I loved my job but I didn't enjoy being away from home during holidays or missing birthdays and special events. In fact, on that trip I was missing a camping trip with my son. He inquired more about the camping trip and my son's name.
As our flight landed in Los Angeles, a knock on the cockpit door revealed Ali's assistant holding a precious gift—a signed 8-by-11-inch photo of Ali. On it, the champion wrote a heartfelt message to my son: “The time your father spends away from home is the price he pays for service to others.”
During 30 years with the airlines, I had many pleasant experiences and many lessons about the generosity and kindness of people from around the world. But 10 years into retirement, what I remember most are Muhammad Ali's stories about his love for his family and his kindness toward my son.
24.How did Ali react to the author's description of the fight against Floyd Patterson?
A.He turned a deaf ear to it. B.He rose to a boxing position.
C.He felt kind of embarrassed. D.He was lost in thought for a while.
25.How did the author feel before meeting Ali?
A.Regretful. B.Awkward. C.Fortunate. D.Precious.
26.Why did Ali offer a signed photo with a message to the author's son?
A.To inspire the author's son to be brave.
B.To make up for the author's son's camping trip.
C.To promote the author's son's understanding of his work.
D.To tell the author's son the importance of friendship.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Life on the move B.Wisdom in seventeen words
C.An unexpected photo for a son D.Balance between job and family

It is thought that music can make maths more enjoyable, keep students engaged and help ease fear or anxiety they have about maths.
To find out more, Turkish researcher Dr Ayça Akin, from the Department of Software Engineering, Antalya Belek University, searched academic databases for research on the topic published between 1975 and 2022. She then combined the results of 55 studies from around the world, involving almost 78,000 young people from kindergarten pupils to university students, to come up with an answer.
Students took maths tests before and after taking part in the intervention and the change in their scores was compared with that of youngsters who didn't take part in an intervention. The use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of maths classes, was associated with greater improvement in maths over time. The integrated lessons had the biggest effect, with around 73% of students who had integrated lessons doing significantly better than youngsters who didn't have any type of musical intervention. Some 69% of students who learned how to play instruments and 58% of students who had normal music lessons improved more than pupils with no musical intervention.
The results also indicate that music helps more with learning arithmetic (算术) than other types of maths and has a bigger impact on younger pupils and those learning more basic mathematical concepts. Dr Akin points out that maths and music have much in common, such as the use of symmetry symbols. Both subjects also require abstract thought and quantitative reasoning.
Limitations of the analysis include the relatively small number of studies available for inclusion. This meant it wasn't possible to look at the effect of factors such as gender, socio-economic status and length of musical instruction on the results.
Dr Akin adds, “Encouraging mathematics and music teachers to plan lessons together could help ease students' anxiety about mathematics, while also boosting achievement.”
28.How did Dr Akin conduct her research?
A.By launching a questionnaire online. B.By creating a data model.
C.By analyzing data worldwide. D.By surveying university students.
29.What were the students asked to do to reflect the effect of the intervention?
A.Take maths tests. B.Develop abstract thought.
C.Plan lessons with music teachers. D.Learn more basic mathematical concepts.
30.Why can music contribute to mathematics learning according to Dr Akin?
A.Music has some similarities with mathematics.
B.Music can help students learn mathematical models.
C.Music is involved in mathematical calculation.
D.Music comes from mathematics.
31.What does the author think of the research?
A.Overall. B.Sensitive. C.Subjective. D.Imperfect.

Not all birds sing, but those that do—some several thousand species—do it a lot. “Why do birds sing so much?” says Iris Adam, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Southern Denmark. “For some reason, birds have a strong drive to sing.” This means hours' singing every day for some species, and that takes much energy. Plus, singing can be perilous. “Instantly you sing, you reveal yourself,” she says. “Like, where you are, that you even exist, where your territory is—all of that immediately is out in the open for predators (捕食者), for everybody.”
To figure out why, Adam designed experiments on zebra finches—little Australian songbirds with striped heads and a bloom of orange on their cheeks. One of her first experiments involved taking males at the top of their game, and cutting off the connection between their brains and their singing muscles. “Already after two days, they'd lost some of their performance,” she says. “After three weeks, they were back to the same level when they were juveniles (幼鸟) and never had sung before.”
Next, she left the birds intact (完好无损的) but kept them in the dark almost around the clock for a week. The only exception was a few half hour blocks each day when Adam switched the lights on so the finches would feed and drink. Light is what stimulates the birds to sing. However, she would move around and tap the cage when the birds wanted to sing.
After a week, the birds' singing muscles lost half their strength. Then she played a male's song before and after the seven days of darkness, yet she couldn't hear a difference. But when Adam played it for a group of female birds—who're the audience for these singing males—six out of nine preferred the song that came from a male who'd been using his singing muscles daily.
Adam's conclusion is that “songbirds need to exercise their vocal muscles to produce top-performance song. If they don't sing, they lose performance. So their vocalizations get less attractive to females—and that's bad”. And this may help explain songbirds' constant singing.
32.What does the underlined word “perilous” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A.Rewarding. B.Promising. C.Attractive. D.Dangerous.
33.What happened to the male finches after operations?
A.Their brains recovered after three weeks.
B.They lost the ability to sing gradually.
C.Their muscles were back to juvenile level quickly.
D.They became inactive when hunting for food.
34.Why were some male finches left in the dark for a week?
A.To prevent them from singing.
B.To expose them to a new lifestyle.
C.To change their communicating patterns.
D.To test their ability to memorize the past.
35.What is the positive effect of songbirds' constant singing?
A.It enhanced their lung capacity.
B.It could frighten away their predators.
C.It improved their digestive ability.
D.It could keep their vocal muscles in shape.

Selecting a perfect watch for others may seem a little discouraging at first. 36 How much should I spend? Should it be sporty or dressy? Here we try to make the idea of how to choose a watch less frightening.
Before you opt to buy a watch for someone else, think carefully about that person's interests, hobbies, style or fashion direction, likes and dislikes. 37 This should influence the type of watch you choose for them.
38 For those living in dry climates, a cool bracelet works wonders, especially with today's integrated bracelets. A great leather strap, especially with a vintage padded look works in most climates.
Even though you know the likes and dislikes of the person you want to buy for, you still have to think first of your own wallet. There are watches out there for every budget, whether it is $100 or $100,000. You may be the type who will spring for a little more when you find just the right item, but having a preset notion of how much you want to spend is critical. 39
Watch shopping does not have to be scary and you don't have to go it alone. Stepping into an authorized retailer, or even shopping online for new or pre-owned watches, can be exciting. 40 Generally the sales staff are happy to help and offer a little direction. But best of all, if you follow steps above, you can outline this from the start to keep the shopping experience in check.
A.Thoughts and fears can run uncontrolled.
B.Remember that a return is always an option.
C.Another determining factor is the climate they live in.
D.This is the most important part of buying a watch.
E.There is no need to jump to higher or lower retail prices.
F.Consider it a learning experience and don't be afraid to ask questions.
G.You'd better consider if the person is a sports enthusiast or a have-fun type of individual.

第二节 (满分25分)

In Whitney High School,Cerritos, California, which was known for its academic excellence and competitive atmosphere, there were two friends, Sam and Emily, who were preparing for their final exams. Sam and Emily were best friends and had always studied together. Sam was naturally gifted in mathematics, while Emily excelled in history. As their final exams approached, they promised to help each other with their weaker subjects.
They spent weeks preparing, exchanging notes, and quizzing each other. Sam helped Emily understand complex mathematics problems, and Emily helped Sam remember historical dates and events. Their friendship grew stronger as they worked towards their common goal.
However, as the exam day neared, Sam started to feel huge pressure. His parents had high expectations, and he was afraid of letting them down. He began to doubt his abilities, especially in history, which was his weakest subject. Emily noticed Sam's anxiety and tried to reassure him, but Sam's stress only seemed to increase. The night before the history exam, Sam admitted to Emily that he was considering cheating because he was so afraid of failing.
Emily was shocked and disappointed. She reminded Sam of all the hard work they had put in and the serious consequences cheating could have. She told him that it was better to try and fail honestly than to succeed through dishonesty.
On the day of the history exam, Sam was extremely nervous. He remembered Emily's words and knew she was right. He decided to face the exam honestly, using what he had learned from their study sessions.
During the exam, Sam struggled with some of the questions, but he did his best to answer them without turning to cheating. When the exam ended, he felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. He had stuck to his values, but he wasn't sure if he had done enough to pass the subject.

参考答案
听力部分录音材料
(Text 1)
M:Excuse me. May I see your licence?
W:I'm afraid I've left it at home.
M:In that case, you'll have to take it to the police station within five days.
(Text 2)
W:I see you're reading One Hundred Years of Solitude. How do you like it?
M:I can't put it down. Have you read it?
W:Yes. In fact, I just finished it but I may need to read it again to understand.
(Text 3)
M:Hi, Cindy. Are you ready for the big performance this afternoon?
W:I don't know, Greg. I've been practicing the script all week, but the princess has so many lines that I don't know if I can remember them all!
(Text 4)
W:Every time I suggest meeting, you have some excuses. Are you trying to avoid me?
M:You know I always look forward to meeting you but I have been very busy with my job. I want to get promoted.
(Text 5)
W:What's wrong?
M:Do you have any liquids in your bag?
W:Oh yeah. I think my nail polish triggered the alarm. Sorry about that.
(Text 6)
W:This is so boring, just sitting back here with nothing to do!
M:Playing a game is a fun way to pass time.
W:OK, but what kind of game can we play when we're going 70 miles an hour in a car?
M:Well, when I was young, we used to play a game in the car called “I Spy”. One person decides on an object that he or she can see, and tells us its color. Then the rest of us have to ask yes-or-no questions to try to find out what it is.
W:I'll go first, and I spy something that's...
M:Let your little sister begin. Remember, it's considered good manners to let younger children have their turns ahead of us.
(Text 7)
W:Tom, I'm considering starting a garden. Do you have any tips?
M:Sure, Jane. What do you plan to grow in your garden?
W:I'm thinking about flowers and herbs. Maybe something simple for a beginner.
M:That's a good choice. Start with plants like sunflowers. They're easy to grow.
W:Thanks! What tools do I need to begin with?
M:Basic tools like a shovel, gloves, and a watering can are essential. Also, get some quality soil and seeds.
W:I see. How often should I water the plants?
M:It depends on the plant. Generally, once every two days is good. But check the soil moisture.
W:Okay, that sounds manageable. And how about sunlight?
M:Most plants need about six hours of sunlight daily. Choose a spot in your garden that gets enough light.
W:Thanks for the advice, Tom. I'm excited to start this gardening journey!
M:You're welcome! Feel free to ask if you need more help.
(Text 8)
W:Jack, have you visited the new science museum? I'm planning a trip this weekend.
M:Yes, Emma, I went there last month. The space exhibit is particularly fascinating.
W:I'm excited about that! I'm also looking forward to the dinosaur section.
M:The dinosaur section is impressive. They have a life-size T-Rex skeleton.
W:Wow, that sounds amazing! Are there other interactive exhibits?
M:Absolutely. There's a section where you can experience a simulated space mission.
W:That must be exciting! How about educational programs for kids?
M:They offer several, from fossil digging workshops to astronomy classes.
W:This trip is sounding better by the minute. Do you think it's a full-day activity?
M:Definitely. There's so much to see and do. You might even want to visit it again.
W:I'm sure we will. Thanks for the information, Jack!
M:No problem, Emma. Enjoy your visit!
(Text 9)
W:Hi, Jacob, I'm excited about the talent show for senior citizens we're planning. How's the preparation going?
M:Hello, Claire! It's shaping up nicely. We've got a variety of acts lined up, from singing to storytelling.
W:That sounds wonderful! How are we promoting the event?
M:We're using community newsletters, social media, and local radio stations to spread the word.
W:Are there any special accommodations we need to consider for our senior participants?
M:Definitely. We're ensuring wheelchair accessibility and arranging transportation for those who need it.
W:That's thoughtful. How can community members get involved?
M:We're looking for volunteers to help on the day and to assist with rehearsals.
W:I'd be happy to help with rehearsals. Is there a theme for the show?
M:The theme is “Golden Memories”. We want to celebrate the experiences and talents of our seniors.
W:I love that idea. It's going to be a memorable event!
M:I agree, Claire. It's a great way to honor our seniors.
(Text 10)
W:How do families make important decisions? Do children have any say in making these decisions, or do parents simply tell them what to do? There are several different methods for making family decisions.
One method is to have a vote. Each family member writes his or her own choice on a piece of paper. With this method, each person gets equal say in the issue being decided. A second method is to give older children special privileges. If you're moving into a new home, for instance, the oldest child might get first choice of bedrooms. Taking turns making the decisions is another method. Suppose a family goes on vacation together each year. One year they might let their daughter decide where they should go. The next year, the choice goes to the son. The last one is to let the head of the household decide what is best. That is the way we do it in my family. The head of our household, my mother, listens to all our opinions. Then she makes a decision.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Editor,
I've noticed some job advertisements in our area set age limits for applicants. I find it inappropriate.
By focusing on age, employers might miss out on talented individuals who don't fit within the required age range. These age limits may also be seen as discriminatory, potentially leading to negative attitudes towards these companies. Instead, I believe job advertisements should focus on skills, qualifications, and experience.
I suggest that you discuss this issue in your newspaper. Encouraging businesses to prioritize capabilities over age can make our local job market fairer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
A few weeks later, the exam results were announced. Sam passed his history exam with an acceptable grade! He was overjoyed and relieved. He realized that he might have got a higher score if he had cheated, but the score was his honest effort, and that made it more valuable. Emily was proud of Sam for making the right choice. She told him that honesty was much more important than any grade.
The experience of preparing for and taking the exams strengthened the bond between Sam and Emily. They learned that facing challenges together, with honesty and support for each other, was more important than the outcome of any test. From then on, Sam approached challenges with more confidence and integrity, and Emily continued to be a supportive friend. Together, they realized that the true test was not in the exams they took but in the choices they made and the kind of people they chose to be.
