My mother promised me that when I was eight years old, she would teach me to knit. I could not wait.
Unfortunately, my home life was less than ideal. My mother was less than affectionate, and my sister and I definitely preferred the company of our father, who was very kind and loving. This apparently added to the conflict between my parents, so the year I turned eight, my mother left us. We woke up one morning and found she was just gone. My father explained that they had discussed the situation and decided my sister and I would be happier staying in the family home with him.
I remembered the promise that I could learn to knit when I was eight. Obviously, my mother was not available and, under the circumstances, I really did not want any contact with her. Apparently, learning to knit was something I had mentioned more than once to my dad.
Imagine my surprise when he came home from work one day and announced to my sister and me that he was going to teach us to knit! He had bought a beginner's book I Learn to Knit and needles and yarn for all three of us. I will never forget sitting happily on the sofa, learning to knit with my sister. In those days, “real” men did not do such things. Dad put aside the prejudices of the time to fulfill a promise made to his daughters. I cannot imagine the courage it must have taken.
Those knitting lessons turned into a lifelong passion for me. Today, I create and sell my own craft designs, and I give all of the credit to a man who was not afraid to be a person.
After decades of searching, I recently found a copy of the book I Learn to Knit my father had purchased many years ago. It is now my most prized possession, and I treasure it as a reminder of a wonderful man who ignored the prejudices of his time to honour a commitment to his two little girls.

B.The author's father was good at knitting.
C.Knitting was just meant for true men.
D.Learning to knit needed a lot of preparations.
26.Which of the following best describes the author's father?
A.Smart and curious. B.Caring and courageous.
C.Diligent and ambitious. D.Determined and severe.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.A broken promise B.The heart of a father
C.A most treasured book D.Benefits of knitting
C
As a species that is heavily dependent on water—without it, we would die within days—we seem to be wired to plan for it. The loss of water contributes to a general mindset of saving and long-term thinking. This could have an important influence on humankind's response to climate change.
We explored thinking about water in several ways. In one experiment, we brought 211 college students to the lab and asked a portion of them to read an article we provided. Some received an article that was awful. It detailed predictions of the worst “water shortage in 1200 years”. Others read an article that was more upbeat. It described how climate change means more rain and therefore plenty of water. (The latter article focused on the positives of water availability and did not, for example, discuss threat of floods.) The rest of the students completed the study without reading an article.
We then asked the students how important it was to save resources and think about the long term. We found that the mere idea of water scarcity was enough to kick-start them into thinking about the future. In contrast, reading about a future water surplus pushed people in the opposite direction. They approved of living for the present and cared less about saving money and other resources, compared with those who had answered the questions without reading about climate change at all.
Next, we looked for places where communities have experienced real water scarcity for generations. We found two geographically close cities in Iran—Shiraz and Yazd—that have similar economies and the same majority religion, language and ethnicity but sharply different amounts of water. Shiraz receives enough rainfall to support vineyards that produce its world-famous wine. Nearby Yazd is bone-dry. Sure enough, people in Yazd thought that planning for the future was more important than those in Shiraz—while people in Shiraz liked the idea of living in the moment more than those in Yazd.
28.What aspect of water is mainly mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.Its use. B.Its source.
C.Its distribution. D.Its significance.
29.What does the underlined word “upbeat” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Ordinary. B.Inspiring. C.Optimistic. D.Confusing.
30.What does the finding reflect?
A.The effect of reading materials.
B.Methods of doing experiments.
C.People's views of exploring the future.
D.People's attitudes towards water resources.
31.Why did researchers study the two cities in Iran?
A.They share much in economies.
B.They think of the future differently.
C.They have a marked difference in rainfall.
D.They are experiencing real water scarcity.
D
Despite lacking a central brain, jellyfish (水母) learned to spot and avoid obstacles in a new study, which is the first evidence that these animals can do something called associative learning. “Maybe learning doesn't need a very complicated nervous system,” says Jan Bielecki from Kiel University in Germany. Maybe any creature with even a simple nervous system can learn.
Caribbean box jellyfish include four rhopalia (感觉棍) hanging off a jellyfish's body. Each rhopalium has six “eyes” and has about 1,000 neurons (神经元) to process what those eyes see. To hunt food, these jellyfish must move between mangrove trees' roots. They judge a root's distance based on how dark it looks compared to the water. In clear waters, nearby roots have high contrast. Only distant roots fade into the background. But in dark waters, even nearby roots can blend into their surroundings and have low contrast. So the researchers wondered if Caribbean box jellyfish could learn that low-contrast objects—which might at first seem distant—were actually close by.
To find it out, the team put 12 jellyfish into a round water tank surrounded by low-contrast gray and white stripes. Such stripes might appear to a jellyfish like distant mangrove roots in the clear water. Initially, the animals seemed to see the gray stripes as distant roots and swam into the tank wall. But those collisions seemed to lead the jellyfish to reconsider the stripes. Soon, the creatures knew how to avoid them.
Next the researchers cut rhopalia off jellyfish and placed them in front of a screen that showed low-contrast, light gray bars. Meanwhile, the rhopalia were given a weak electrical pulse. This copied the nerve signal rhopalia would get if a jellyfish bumped into something. At first, the rhopalia ignored low-contrast bars. But receiving “bump” signals when they saw those bars made them start paying attention. Their nerves started sending out the types of signals they emit when a jellyfish moves away from something.
This suggests the rhopalia alone can learn that seemingly distant, low-contrast objects are in fact close enough to avoid. That, in turn, hints that these nerve centers are behind Caribbean box jellyfish learning.
32.What is the focus of the research?
A.The mechanism of how jellyfish learn.
B.The theory of associative learning.
C.The composition of a nervous system.
D.The special living habit of jellyfish.
33.How do jellyfish judge a root's distance?
A.By judging its size. B.By looking at its contrast.
C.By comparing its features. D.By analyzing its surroundings.
34.How did the researchers conduct their research?
A.They coloured something to attract jellyfish.
B.They exposed jellyfish to natural surroundings.
C.They adjusted the distance between objects.
D.They created jellyfish's similar living conditions.
35.What can rhopalia be described as for jellyfish?
A.A driving force. B.A learning center.
C.A special inspiration. D.A source of knowledge.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
More often than not, people cannot find a point of balance between their careers and their families, and one is given more priority than the other. This behavior has been associated with several dysfunctional (机能失调的) outcomes—tense familial relationships, inefficiency at work, and poor health. 36 The idea may seem difficult, but it is possible if you take the time and care to make it a priority.
Building strong communication with your family members is significant in bringing a work-life balance. 37 Sharing your work with your family and letting them know your work struggles can help them understand your perspective.
38 Having workplace flexibility can make your life a lot easier. You can work from home or any other remote location without compromising your family time.
Balancing family life and work is all about consistency. Having a routine does not mean streamlining your daily chores and tasks. You must build a routine for yourself where you can relax at the end of the day and de-stress your body. If you're an early bird, try to get some house or work tasks done in the morning before the kids wake up. 39
Learning how to balance work and family life isn't easy. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. 40 Essentially, a balance between work and family occurs when a person is able to sufficiently meet family commitments and adequately perform responsibilities at work.
A.Hence, individuals need to learn and work on balancing work and family life.
B.This allows for quality breakfast time with the kids before they go to school.
C.Balancing work and family life is one of the most common sources of stress.
D.Having strong familial bonds promotes trust, understanding, and support.
E.Every person must find specific solutions depending on their own needs.
F.You can also ask your employer to add flexibility to your workplace.
G.It is important that we create boundaries between work and family.

In a small town, there was a young girl named Emma. She loved playing outside and exploring nature. One sunny day, while she was in her backyard, she noticed a small bird lying on the ground. It was a bluebird, with blue feathers. It seemed hurt and could not fly any longer.
Emma approached the bird slowly, not wanting to scare it. She could see its left wing was bent in a strange way. She realized the bird must have injured its wing. Without thinking, Emma gently picked up the little bird and took it inside her house.
She found an old shoebox and lined it with soft cloth to make a comfortable bed for the bird. She then placed the injured bird inside, ensuring it was safe and warm. Emma remembered seeing her mother give water to their pet cat with a dropper. She thought the bird might be thirsty, so she fetched a dropper and gently gave the bird some water.
Every day, Emma took care of the little bluebird. She would feed it, give it water, and talk to it in soft, comforting tones. She even named it Bluey. At first, Bluey was scared and would chirp loudly whenever Emma came close. But over time, Bluey grew to trust her and would even sing softly when she was around.
Emma wanted to help Bluey heal faster. She decided to learn more about birds. With her parents' help, she borrowed a book about birds from the library. The book taught her how to make a splint (夹板) for Bluey's wing. With careful hands and a lot of patience, Emma was able to fix the splint on Bluey's wing.
Days turned into weeks. Emma continued to care for Bluey, and the little bird grew stronger each day. She noticed that the bird's wing was healing, and it began to flap its wings inside the box.

(Text 2)
M:The electricity bill for this month is 95 dollars. It's a bit high.

W:Oh, yeah.
M:He planned to make a video about the most expensive wedding in the world but was informed the wedding was off after all the hard work.
W:How terrible.
(Text 4)
M:Hello, Amy. This is Dave. I want to return the book I borrowed from you last night. Will you be at home at about six o'clock?
W:Yes, I will. I will be cooking dinner.
M:Oh well. Then I will come over at six.
(Text 5)

M:I'll get you one.
(Text 6)
W:So your name is Sarang Patel, but I thought your first name was Sy!
M:Sy is my nickname, and Sarang is my given name. It means “navigator” in Hindi.
W:Very funny! My nickname is Jen, and my given name's Jennifer. I was named after my father's grandmother, Guinevere, which means “pure”. It's also the name of the wife of King Arthur in an English story.
M:It's strange. In India, we don't name children after their relatives like you do in America.
W:Culture varies.
(Text 7)
W:Hey, Tom. I heard you're training for the city marathon. How's that going?
M:Hi, Lisa. Yes, I am. It's challenging but fulfilling. I've been running daily.
W:That's impressive. How do you prepare for it?
M:Along with running, I focus on healthy eating and proper rest. It's about balance.

M:Mostly alone, but sometimes I join a local running club for motivation.
W:Well, good luck, Tom!
M:Thanks, Lisa.
(Text 8)
W:Hi, John. Are you excited about our trip next month?
M:Absolutely, Sarah. I can't wait to visit Paris. Have you decided what to pack?

M:Good idea. I'll bring my camera. I want to capture every moment.
W:Me too! Should we plan our trip now?
M:Yes, let's start with the Eiffel Tower and then the Louvre Museum.
W:Perfect. And let's not forget to try some French cuisine. I've heard it's amazing.
M:Definitely! I want to try escargot. What about you?
W:I'm more interested in pastries, especially macarons. Also, we should book a river trip on the Seine.
M:Great idea! A night cruise would be romantic. Do you think we should reserve a hotel near the city center?
W:Yes, that would make traveling easier. I'll look into some options.
M:Alright.
(Text 9)
W:Hi, Jason. I'm thinking of starting a book club in our neighborhood. Interested?
M:Hey, Claire. That's a great idea! I'd love to join. What kind of books will we read?
W:I was thinking of a mix of genres—from classic literature to contemporary novels.
M:That sounds perfect. We could also include some non-fiction books occasionally.
W:Absolutely. Diversity in reading materials will make our discussions more interesting.
M:How often do you plan to meet?
W:I'm considering once a month. We can take turns hosting the meetings at our homes.
M:Good plan. We can have themed discussions based on the book of the month.
W:Yes, and maybe even related activities or outings, like visiting a museum if we read a historical novel.
M:I love that idea! Count me in. I can help with organizing the first meeting.
W:Fantastic! I'll start putting together a list of potential book selections.
(Text 10)
W:Romeo and Juliet is the story of two families, the Capulets and the Montagues. The play is set in Verona, Italy. The St. Stephens High School drama club performed this play last weekend. Allison Bourne played Juliet, Capulet's beautiful young daughter. She showed the mixed emotions Juliet felt after secretly marrying the son of her family's most hated enemy. At times, she was happy, and at times, she was afraid. David Taylor played Romeo, Montague's son. He put on a good performance despite having a head cold. Eric Parker was the perfect Tybalt, Juliet's cousin: dark and angry. Maggie Jones played the nurse. She acted the part of a gossipy old woman very well. She made everyone in the audience laugh at her jokes and her comic character. The stage lights were too bright. But the sword fights looked very real, and the costumes were wonderful.
Overall, the production of Romeo and Juliet was a great night of high school theater.

第二节
One possible version:
One sunny morning, Emma felt that Bluey was finally ready to take to the sky once more. She had been caring for the little bird for weeks, watching as it recovered from its injuries. Now, she knew, it was time for it to return to the wild. Emma held up the shoebox, which had served as Bluey's temporary home for weeks, and opened it. The little bird looked around, chirping excitedly, as if sensing the freedom. Emma's heart filled with joy as she watched Bluey change from being scared to confident.
With a flap of its strong wings, Bluey flied into the sky. It circled above Emma before disappearing into the distance. Emma's heart swelled with pride as she watched it fly off into the vast expanse of the sky, joining the other birds. Emma's face broke into a broad smile as she felt a sense of accomplishment and knew that she had played an important role in Bluey's recovery. She had given it a chance to live its life once again in the wild, where it belonged.
