On your way to a soccer game, it’s easy to take a cold bottled water out of the fridge. But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels (化石燃料). In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other country in the world. In order to make all these bottles, 17 million barrels (桶) of crude oil (原油) are used. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.
Americans drink bottled water because they think it is better than water out of the tap but that’s not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the tap is safe. People love the convenience of bottled water.
Plastic bottles pollute the environment but recycling can help. Instead of (而不是) going out with the rubbish, plastic bottles can be turned into useful items. Sadly, for every six bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling (回收利用的) bin. Or, even worse, they end up as rubbish on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate under the ground.
Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.
16. Seventeen million barrels of crude oil can keep a million cars going for ________.
A. twelve years B. one year C. twenty months D. twelve weeks
17. Why do Americans prefer to buy more bottled water?
A. Because a large box of bottled water is very cheap.
B. Because they think it is better and more convenient.
C. Because it is safer and cleaner than water from the tap.
D. Because recycling can help instead of polluting the environment.
18. What does the underlined word “disintegrate” mean?
A. 切碎 B. 发芽 C. 分解 D. 收好
19. Which of the following is NOT true according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Not all the plastic bottles can be recycled into useful items.
B. Plastic bottles will pollute the land, the rivers, the lakes, and the ocean.
C. It’s not easy for plastic bottles to disintegrate under the ground.
D. It takes 6 hours to power a 60-watt light bulb by recycling one plastic bottle.
20. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Is bottled water safer? B. Plastic bottles pollute or not? C. Why Americans love bottled water? D. Buy bottled water or not?

On your way to a soccer game, it’s easy to take a cold bottled water out of the fridge. But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels (化石燃料). In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other country in the world. In order to make all these bottles, 17 million barrels (桶) of crude oil (原油) are used. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.
Americans drink bottled water because they think it is better than water out of the tap, but that’s not true.
A twelve years B. one year C. twenty months D. twelve weeks
17. Why do Americans prefer to buy more bottled water?
A. Because a large box of bottled water is very cheap.

C. Because it is safer and cleaner than water from the tap.
D. Because recycling can help instead of polluting the environment.
18. What does the underlined word “disintegrate” mean?

D. It takes 6 hours to power a 60-watt light bulb by recycling one plastic bottle.
20 What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Is bottled water safer? B. Plastic bottles pollute or not? C. Why Americans love bottled water? D. Buy bottled water or not?
【答案】16. B 17. B 18. C 19. D 20. D
