Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu — a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty. Little did she know that this trip would spark an extraordinary musical creation.
During a workshop at a local art school, Li met Pierre, a French violinist who was fascinated by her instrument’s attractive sound. “It’s like the voice of ancient China,” he remarked with excitement, gently plucking (拨) the erhu’s strings. Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration.
As they practiced in a sunlit studio overlooking the Seine, Li taught Pierre how to imitate raindrops with quick bow movements on the erhu, while Pierre showed her how to weave Western harmonies into the Chinese folk tune “Jasmine Flower.” The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece “Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause. The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous (有活力的) melodies.
What began as a summer experiment blossomed into lasting friendship and something far greater. Today, Li and Pierre co-teach virtual music classes, connecting students in Chengdu and Lyon through weekly “global jam sessions.” Their students cooperate on pieces that mix erhu with guitar or Peking opera with jazz. Li often tells her pupils, “Music has no borders; it’s a language that turns differences into harmonies.” When traditions meet with open hearts, they don’t conflict; they compose something entirely new.
24. Why did Li Mei bring her erhu to Paris?
A. To share Chinese music culture. B. To give it to her friend as a present.
C. To display it at a local studio. D. To teach students full-time.
25. What contributed to the lasting cooperation of Li Mei and Pierre?
A. Their common and deep love for traditional Chinese music.
B. Their successful performance and inspiration from each other’s music.
C. The opportunity to participate in the Bastille Day celebration together.
D. The desire to teach music in a virtual way to students around the world.
26. Why was “Silk Road Echoes” well received by the audience?
A. It reflected the beauty of nature wonderfully.
B. It featured traditional Chinese folk performance.
C. It was a musical handshake between civilizations.
D. It was an excellent musical instrument exhibition.
27. Which might be the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Musical Journey Across Continents
B. The Journey of Traditional Instruments
C. Cultural Exchange in Paris: A Summer Adventure
D. Silk Road Echoes: Bridging Cultures Through Music
A 25. B 26. C 27. D

根据第一段中的“Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu — a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty.(去年夏天,来自成都的17岁的李梅在巴黎走下飞机,手里拿着她心爱的二胡——一种从她祖母那里传下来的中国传统两弦乐器。作为青年文化交流项目的一部分,她多年来一直梦想着这一刻,但在异国他乡代表她的传统的压力让她手心冒汗)”可知, 李梅是作为青年文化交流项目的一部分来到巴黎,她携带的二胡是中国传统乐器,并且她深知自己肩负着在异国展示中国文化遗产的重任。 由此可推知,李梅把二胡带到巴黎是为了分享中国音乐文化。故选A。
根据第二段中的“Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration.(受到彼此音乐的启发, 他们决定将二胡的深情旋律与小提琴的动态范围融为一体, 在即将到来的巴士底日庆祝活动中演出。)”以及第三段中的“The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece “Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause.(这种融合创造了一种迷人的音景, 这是两人都无法想象的。演出当晚, 他们的作品《丝路回声》赢得了雷鸣般的掌声。)”可知, 他们成功的表演和从彼此的音乐中获得的灵感促成了李梅和皮埃尔的持久合作。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous (有活力的) melodies.(二胡悲怆的音调与小提琴铿锵有力的旋律交相呼应, 令观众惊叹不已。)”
C
A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry VIII a good king?” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. But “Solve this quadratic equation (二次方程式)” would leave the classroom nonplussed and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be accessible, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will engage many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine (疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful? How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill? Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful. First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem, a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive (直觉的) assumptions and very simple maths.
Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.
28. What does the underlined word “nonplussed” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. impressed B. inspired
C. confused D. amused
29. What is the biggest selling point of The Art of Uncertainty according to the author?
A. It casts light on math thoughts.
B. It covers various topics.
C. It makes sense to ordinary people.
D. It satisfies maths professionals.
30. Why does the author mention Bayes’s theorem in paragraph 3?
A. To prove the reliability of intuition.
B. To reveal the book’s academic nature.
C. To underline the deep truth of judgement.
D. To demonstrate Spiegelhalter’s writing approach.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward Spiegelhalter’s writing style?
A. Critical of its oversimplification.
B. Admiring of its clarity and accessibility.
C. Doubtful about its practical value.
D. Neutral toward its academic depth.
C 29. C 30. D 31. B

根据第二段中的“ His new book will engage many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.(他的新书将不仅仅吸引数学家,因为它的主题是普遍的:如何分析机会、不确定性和风险。)”
根据第三段中的“First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem, a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. (首先,斯皮格尔哈尔特教授用这些问题来阐述关于概率和统计如何工作的更广泛的思想。因此,关于疫苗安全性的讨论就涉及到了贝叶斯定理,这是一个随着新证据的出现而改进人们对概率判断的程序。)”以及“The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive (直觉的) assumptions and very simple maths.( 斯皮格尔哈尔特教授的方法的乐趣在于,他只是通过一些直觉假设和非常简单的数学就得出了这个深刻的真理。)”
根据文章最后一段“Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.(不过,最重要的是施皮格哈尔特教授传达这些想法的技巧。许多概率和统计知识可能与我们的直觉相悖,其背后的数学往往令人恐惧。但这不是一本难以阅读或理解的书)” 可推知,作者欣赏施皮格哈尔特写作风格的清晰易懂。故选B项。
D
A watched pot never boils, but time has wings when you’re having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in solid science — our sense of time does expand and contract depending on the way we experience the world. Even delicate visual features can affect how we perceive time. New research shows more memorable images seem to last longer.
Martin Wiener, head of the research, says the finding helps reveal how the brain’s time-bending strategy allows it to process and remember more information. While what is actually happening in the brain when time seems to expand remains unclear, scientists suspect it may have something to do with helping the brain process more information in limited time.
This is especially relevant for the brain’s visual system which, subjected to information overload, has to rank in order of importance, allowing for limited resources. Recent research has shown some images are more naturally memorable than others.
To understand how this memorability of an image, along with a few simpler visual features such as scene size and disorder, might relate to our subjective sense of time, Wiener and his colleagues conducted related experiments, in which subjects were shown images with varying durations and were asked to categorize whether the length of time on the screen was either “short” or “long”. The next day they were given a surprise memory test to see which images they recalled seeing.
The researchers found larger scene sizes seemed to extend time while more disorderly scenes seemed to contract it. Besides, the subjects perceived more memorable images remained on the screen longer, even if they were all presented for the same amount of time. To find the underlying factor, the team fed the same memorability-ranked images to a neural (神经的) network modeled after the brain’s visual system and found more memorable images were processed faster.
The explanation for why our brain’s faster processing would slow time is that it’s increasing the amount of information it can take in at once. Limited resources to process information may act as a sort of bottleneck, which the brain can widen when it needs to absorb more information, thus extending time.
32. What does the saying “A watched pot never boils” describe?
A. The unnoticed passage of time B. The feeling that time hangs heavy.

根据第一段“A watched pot never boils, but time has wings when you’re having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in solid science — our sense of time does expand and contract depending on the way we experience the world. Even delicate visual features can affect how we perceive time. New research shows more memorable images seem to last longer.(“心急锅不开,快乐时光总是过得很快” 这句俗语有科学依据,即我们对时间的感知会根据我们体验世界的方式而伸缩,新研究表明更令人难忘的图像似乎持续时间更长。)”

___36___. When the other person suggests that they want to talk, do something to show that they have your full, undivided attention. Close the book you’re reading or put down your phone and face your body towards them with open arms to show them that you’re ready to listen.
Think before you respond. Always try to think twice before you speak. ___37___ , think about questions to ask that can grant you clarity. Avoid saying more than you have to be by taking a moment to reflect after the speaker asks you for your opinion.
Only speak on something when it is appropriate. Discuss what makes sense and try to stay away from examples that may seem irrelevant, unreasonable, and ambiguous ___38___ , if you don’t know what you want to say. For example, “What does this mean? Who can we hold responsible, how, and why?” This encourages others to speak more.
Keep conversations balanced by asking questions. In balanced conversations, people say what they have to say. Rather than talking until something comes up, balance the conversation by saying things like “Enough about me. What do you think?” and “I know we’ve been talking a lot about my opinion, I want to hear your opinion, too!” If you have a question about something or need clarification, don’t interrupt the person while they’re talking. ___39___ .
Practice staying on topic by challenging and recording yourself. Record yourself talking and see if you start to depart from the topic. ___40___ . Once you’re able to do that, try to make your point in 30 seconds. This exercise can help you stay on topic and avoid wandering.

In a relatable and inclusive tone, Set Boundaries, Find Peace presents simple-yet-powerful ways to set healthy boundaries in all aspects of life.

A. It reflected the beauty of nature wonderfully.
B. It featured traditional Chinese folk performance.
C. It was a musical handshake between civilizations.

C. The hardship of preparing cuisine. D. The perception that time is confusing.
33. How does the brain’s visual system handle information?
A. By setting priorities. B. By comparing similar scenes.
C. By sorting randomly. D. By screening out complex images.
34. Which of the images seems to last longest if shown on the screen for an equal duration based on the study?
A. B. C. D.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To contrast sayings with scientific findings
B. To explain visual features’ effect on memory
C. To describe brain’s information processing in time perception
D. To explore link between image memorability and subjective time
