Following the crowd (随大流) may not always be in a person’s best interest. However, a new study shows that teens who go along with their friends may become healthier as adults. Scientists have known that close friendships help improve health. People who keep doing their own things may experience unpleasant feelings and get sick. Those findings inspired (启发) Joseph Allen, a scientist, to study teens’ behaviors. Allen’s group noticed that experiences during teen years might influence adult health.
Scientists interviewed 171 teens every year for five years, starting when the kids were 13. These teens became the focal (焦点的) teens in the study. Scientists asked the focal teens about both positive and negative questions of friendship. They also spoke to their closest friends. They asked the friends how likely the focal person was to follow the crowd, go along with the friends or keep on doing his or her own things.
They interviewed the same 171 people again when they grew up, at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person’s overall health. The scientists found a correlation (相互关系) between a teen’s behavior and adult health. Firstly, teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Secondly, teens who held back (抑制) their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults than those who shared feelings with a close friend. What’s more the study found that teens who went along with what their friends wanted, instead of totally depending on their own, also were healthier in their twenties.
The correlation held up (依然成立) even after the scientists included other possible influences on health, such as weight and family income. Study showed that such other things did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did. For those who wonder whether they should follow the crowd or not, now they have a legitimate (合理的) reason to say yes!
31. Scientists asked the focal teens ________.
A. if they experienced unpleasant feelings
B if they always agreed with their friends
C. about the things they kept on doing on their own
D. about the positive and negative questions of friendship
32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. Expressing feelings to a close friend can be good for you.
B. Other things can explain health as well as teen friendships.
C. Depending on one’s own is better than working with friends.
D Teenagers shouldn’t follow the crowd but should say no to others.

Think about how much time you spent outdoors last week. Really “outdoors.” Walking from the car into the mall doesn’t count. Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet or playing video games or watching TV. You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the computer.”
If so, it’s likely that you spent more time inside four walls than outside in fresh air. Kids today spend two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a University of Michigan study. Non-moving activities are more popular. The costs “include overweight, greater stress (压力), higher rates of physical and emotional illness and less joy…” says Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder (自然缺失症).
Play is important, even for adults. Just getting outdoors does wonders.
Outdoor activity betters your senses. The next time you sit down to message your friends take note of your senses during and after your texting. Then do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring, and fishing help hone all of your senses,” says Betsy Keller. She’s a professor of exercise and sports sciences at Ithaca College in New York. “Smell, sight…all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.”
Outdoor play frees your mind. Are you stressed out? Having trouble focusing your mind on what you’re doing? Too much time indoors— away from the natural world—may be a cause. Louv uses a term to describe the set of problems caused by too much time indoors: nature deficit disorder. He says, “I use it to describe the price we pay for being so separated from nature.”
Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment. When you’re out, breathe in fresh air, hear the leaves crackle underfoot and search cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected to the natural world. No woods nearby? Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park.
So, the next time you sit down to spend quality time with a video game, consider treating yourself to a little outdoor play instead.
35. Richard Louv may believe that ______.
A. spending too much time indoors may cause health problems
B. kids today do more outdoor activities than kids in the 1990s
C. kids should pay for being playing in the natural world
D. hiking is a better way to exercise than fishing
36. Which of the following is a good way to enjoy outdoor play?
A. Walking from your car into the restaurant.
B. Spending your quality time with TV shows.
C. Playing a video game of making sand buildings by the beach.
D. Watching in your local park how fast the clouds are moving.
37. What does “hone” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. remember B. improve C. test D. lose
38. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why kids should play outside. B. Why kids prefer outdoor activities.
C. How kids play games in the nature. D. How kids can get close to the nature.

Mom’s Recipe for Life
I have a lot of Mom’s recipes in a blue box, like the apple pie she made during my growing up years. However, the recipe I treasure most is not in the box. My Mom lived that recipe all of her life.
My mother grew up in a small coal mining town. My grandfather once told me that she knew no stranger; she considered everyone in that community her friend. That attitude continued wherever she lived for the rest of her life.
As a teen, I was embarrassed (尴尬的) every time my mother talked to strangers and offered a smile to everyone in the store or on the city bus. Almost all of them responded (回应) with a bright smile of their own. Some spoke, and others nodded their heads at this elderly woman who brought a little light into their day.
What really touched me was Mom’s experience on the bus. The weeks I could not be there, she took the bus to the supermarket. After her first trip, I asked her how it went.
“Ha!” she said, “I got on that bus and what did I see? Thirteen little old ladies and one old man, and no one spoke.”
I wondered how long it would be until the silence on that bus would change. Ou my next visit, Mom mentioned the 13 little old ladies on the bus again.
“Oh, are you talking with them now?” I asked.
“Of course,” she said. “One day, I climbed up the steps of the bus and before I looked for a seat, I gave them a big smile and I said, ‘Isn’t it a wonderful day?’ I noticed a few shy smiles.”
Mom didn’t give up. She greeted them each time she got on the bus. Soon, the whole group was laughing and talking to one another. The bus became more than just transportation (交通工具).
When we went to the different stores, I watched as she smiled and chatted with strangers. Some of them looked poor, but once Mom smiled at them and started a conversation, most responded happily. My mother didn’t embarrass me any longer.
Mom left me ten years ago, but I carry on her recipe for life. Now, I always smile first and all those people respond happily. My mother taught me by example. She gave me a recipe for life.

Emma was a great hitter in practice, but she had never hit a ball during an always struck out (三振出局).

When the game started, Emma cheered loudly for her teammates. She caught a fly ball in the outfield to make an out, and everyone cheered for her. Emma struck out when it was her turn to bat (击球), but her team was doing well.

B. if they always agreed with their friends
C. about the things they kept on doing on their own
D. about the positive and negative questions of friendship
32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Who took part in the study. B. How scientists did the study.
C. Why scientists did the study. D. What scientists learnt from the study.
33. What can we learn from the study?
A. Expressing feelings to a close friend can be good for you.
B. Other things can explain health as well as teen friendships.
C. Depending on one’s own is better than working with friends.
D. Teenagers shouldn’t follow the crowd but should say no to others.
34. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Teens and Growth B. Say Yes to Teens
C. Friendship and Health D. Get along with Friends

The next time you sit down to message your friends, take note of your senses during and after your texting.
C Playing a video game of making sand buildings by the beach.
