B Maya Ganesh’s passion for environmental restoration can be traced back to 1995, when she had just graduated from university and discovered her interest in environmental economics, which, at the time, was not seen as profitable. So, owing to family pressure, she couldn’t pursue her dream and ended up with a business career, but her passion for it remained. It was her mother’s encouragement that brought a turning point. “When I was 38, she said, ‘Why don’t you do it now?’” Maya recalls. Initially hesitant about starting from zero, she eventually pursued a Master’s in Environment and Sustainable Development in the UK. Inspired by London’s Allotment System, where residents could grow their food on government-assigned plots, Maya devoted herself to community-driven sustainable (可持续的) initiatives in East London. In 2016, she walked into Headmaster’s office of a global school to suggest the idea of a school garden as an interdisciplinary (跨学科的) learning space. Maya suggested they should not do any landscaping in the school but let her create a school garden instead. The project was designed as a sparetime course, where students could learn about organic farming—what Maya refers to as “regenerative agriculture”. “We started with Grade 7,” Maya recalls. “Starting from scratch was a lot of work, but with some labour, the garden began to take shape. By July 2018, students had created two forest patches, digging pits, adding biomass, and planting diverse crops. Years later, these students are seeing the fruits of their work.” The activity is now open to students from kindergarten to Grade 12. Maya educates the students on the importance of preserving traditional varieties through seed saving, ensuring they understand the value of biodiversity. Since 2019, the garden has expanded, and the project has also become financially self-supplying. Students harvest crops as part of their classes. Maya emphasizes that the garden is not a production unit but a learning space. The kids take home some of the produce, and the mothers are happy. They sell the spare produce to the school and the community, allowing the garden to fund its tools and resources. This model not only engages the students but also fosters a sense of responsibility and appreciation for sustainable practices. 24. What made Maya decide to pursue her dream? A. The support from her family. B. The success of her business career. C. The pressure from her mother. D. The potential of environmental economics. 25. What can we learn about Maya’s “regenerative agriculture”? A. It is a campus beautification project. B. It is a course related to organic farming. C. It is a part of London’s Allotment System. D. It is a planting initiative financed by the government. 26. What does Maya focus on while carrying out her program? A. The expansion of the garden. B. The output of the crops in the garden. C. The school’s approval. D. The students’ awareness of sustainability. 27. Which words can best describe Maya? A. Innovative and determined. B. Passionate but indecisive. C. Honest and considerate. D. Selfless but traditional. C Ingenuity arrived on Mars alongside NASA’s Perseverance explorer in February 2021. Two months later, Ingenuity became the first aircraft to complete a powered, controlled flight on another planet. The experimental helicopter was designed to test take-off, short flight and landing operations in the atmospheres of other planets. The helicopter took its last flight, number 72, in January 2024. Unfortunately, that flight ended in a hard landing on the Martian surface. Engineers of NASA fully investigated Ingenuity’s last flight on Mars for almost a year. They found the cause of the crash was linked to the helicopter’s navigation (导航) system. That camera-based system was not able to collect reliable data on elements of the Martian surface to support a safe landing. NASA explained that Ingenuity’s navigation system plays a crucial role in collecting data about the surface to ensure the helicopter can complete a smooth landing. The helicopter uses a camera that points downward, gathering information about what is below the aircraft. In past flights, the engineers said the camera was able to find smooth, suitable landing possibilities. But NASA said during the final flight, the helicopter was traveling in an area with very few surface features for the camera to collect. This meant the helicopter’s navigation system could not find enough of these features to choose a good landing spot. The images recovered from Ingenuity suggested the navigation system’s inability to pick up surface features made the helicopter come down rapidly. The hard landing on a sand dune is believed to have caused the helicopter to turn over and roll. The engineers said images showed that all four of Ingenuity’s rotor blades (旋桨) broke at their weakest point. The damaged blades also caused the aircraft to shake. Events related to the crash led to increased power demand which resulted in the loss of communications. Although the crash ended Ingenuity’s flight operations, NASA said it is still able to provide and send back weather information and other kinds of data. The space agency says this information could be invaluable in designing future aircraft or other explorers to be sent to Mars. 28. What is a disadvantage of Ingenuity’s navigation system? A. It can’t store data for a long time. B. Its camera can’t take images clear enough. C. It can’t support long flight in the Martian atmosphere. D. It can’t collect enough data of the featureless surface. 29. What mainly caused Ingenuity to lose contact with NASA? A. A shortage of electricity. B. Martian atmospheric pressure. C. The shake caused by the damaged blades. D. The damage to communications equipment. 30. What is NASA’s attitude to the future aircraft to Mars? A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. D. Conservative. 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. Ingenuity’s Last Flight B. Ingenuity’s Navigation System C. Research into Ingenuity’s Crash D. The Difficulty of Landing on Mars D Walkable communities are areas where the majority of services and goods are reachable without a car or public transportation. Up until the mid-20th century, plenty of cities in the US were designed for people walking in the street. However, as widespread development and rising housing prices pushed citizens towards the suburbs, the infrastructures (基础设施) that once helped develop well-connected communities disappeared. Only 6.8 percent of the population lives in highly walkable places, according to a 2023 report. Where a person settles down can directly affect the lifestyle habits they have. Researchers discovered that each 1 percent increase in an area’s walkability led to a 0.42 percent increase in people actually walking around the neighborhood. Research supports the idea that more walkable communities would be a net positive for society, especially as a way to help people extend their lifespans and their health spans — the number of years a person is able to function in good condition. Besides bolstering the population’s overall health, putting roots down in a walkable neighborhood can significantly increase a family’s overall wellness and quality of life. Happy people tend to lead longer lives, and one 2023 study even found that living in a walkable neighborhood was directly linked with the happiness of people between the ages of 36 to 45. Reasons behind this phenomenon tend to pile up. Mr. Smith, a sociologist, mentions, “Due to a limited dependency on cars, these communities’ more accessible layouts are better for the environment, which means cleaner air and less greenhouse gas emissions (排放). This benefits community wellness, as harmful or polluted air can negatively affect public health, contributing to disease in adults and developmental issues in children. Additionally, more walkable areas facilitate the local economy as strong social ties tend to support small businesses.” Human health gains are also extensive partly because how walker-friendly neighborhoods promote active lifestyles and outdoor activities such as running or biking. Even for younger generations, mental health and economic benefits abound in these spaces. As experts note, walking some distances can enhance children’s creativity in the long term. 32. What is a character of walkable communities? A. They are mainly located in rural areas. B. Most daily services are accessible without vehicles. C. They require extensive public transportation systems. D. The majority of houses are priced at a significantly high level. 33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The method of extending people’s lifetime. B. The convenience of walkable communities. C. The benefit of walkable communities for people’s health. D. The influence of housing prices on people’s walking habits. 34. What does the underlined word “bolstering” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Recovering. B. Ignoring. C. Strengthening. D. Damaging. 35. Which can boost the local economy according to Mr. Smith? A. Less greenhouse gas emissions. B. The limited dependence on cars. C. The improvement of public health. D. Close relationships among residents. Avalanche dogs help locate skiers and snowboarders buried in the snow. They’re excellent at search and rescue because of years of training, excellent on-snow agility (敏捷), and an amazing sense of smell. ____36____ They are left to a handler, an owner who will take charge of their training but also care for them like a beloved pet. That first winter, handlers will ski around with dogs in their jackets to make them get used to resort life and all the sights, sounds, and smells that come with being a rescue dog. By the end of the season, they’ll begin obedience (服从) training and practice drills to build their drive to search and rescue. First, the dog is familiarized with human scent (气味) thanks to plenty of time with the handler. Then, in runaway training, the handler gets the dog excited, tells it to stay, runs away and hides. ____37____ Dogs have a very impressive sense of smell. ____38____ That’s because humans give out something called skin-rafts, which are lighter than air, so they go up through the snow and collect on top of it in a sort of pool. As long as handlers can get their dogs into the scent zone, the dogs will walk around the area until they find the center of it, which is located directly above a buried skier. ____39____ Because even if humans were able to discover these scent pools, they cannot skillfully navigate deep snow. Even equipped with snowshoes, humans will find it hard to move quickly while dogs have little trouble jumping over and through it. As an advantage dogs don’t require equipment like people do. ____40____ This all makes them the ultimate avalanche rescue tool for those who have been trapped in the deep snow. A. Training starts when the dogs are little ones. B. They often look like the happiest creatures in the snow. C. They are durable and well-equipped for severe weather. D. Don’t rely only on these trained animals to save your life. E. Indeed, dogs’ agility is what gives them their final strength. F. It makes them exceptional at finding people buried in the snow. G. Finally, it must find the hidden handler with the order “search”. While undergoing treatment, I returned to work. I was a single mother of two little kids — one aged 2 and the other aged 7. I was on sick leave due to a motor-vehicle accident and no benefits had come in. There was very little food in the house, and I didn’t know where to turn. One day, I heard a loud knock on the door. I opened it, only to find an old man in worn clothes, who later I discovered was a mysterious angel. His beard was scraggly (散乱的) and untidy. The freezing air made me wonder what he could possibly want. In a shaky voice, he introduced himself as David and asked me whether I happened to have a cup of hot tea and something to eat for him. I awkwardly told him that there wasn’t much food in the house, but I could offer him some tea and bread with peanut butter or jam. “That would be most appreciated,” David said as tears ran down his cheeks. I was hesitant to let him come into the house, so I asked him if he minded waiting on the steps. He responded that he didn’t. I went into the house, prepared a cup of hot tea and four slices of bread with peanut butter, and brought them to him. We sat on the steps as he ate and chatted a little about life and how hard it could be. When David finished, I asked if he would like more, and he expressed his gratitude to me. While the teakettle (茶壶) was boiling, I searched for a pair of gloves and a coat that had been my late, husband’s. With the items in hand, I took them to David, and he tried on the coat. “A perfect fit,” he said. Tears welled up in his eyes. After David left, I suddenly remembered a pair of boots that had belonged to my husband. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The following Christmas, a package from a man named David was delivered at my doorstep. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024—2025学年高二(下)期中检测 英语 考生注意: 1. How much is the shirt? A 25. B 26. D 27. 根据第二段中的“It was her mother’s encouragement that brought a turning point.(是她母亲的鼓励带来了她人生的转折点。)”及““When I was 38, she said, ‘Why don’t you do it now?’” Maya recalls.(“当我38岁的时候,她说,‘你为什么不现在做呢?’” Maya回忆道。)”可知,母亲的鼓励使Maya决定追求她的梦想。即家人的支持。故选A。 根据第三段最后一句“The project was designed as a sparetime course, where students could learn about organic farming—what Maya refers to as “regenerative agriculture”.( 这个项目是作为一门业余课程设计的,学生们可以在这里学习有机农业,也就是Maya所说的“再生农业”。)” 根据第五段中的“Maya educates the students on the importance of preserving traditional varieties through seed saving, ensuring they understand the value of biodiversity. (Maya教育学生通过保存种子来保护传统品种的重要性,确保他们了解生物多样性的价值。)”及最后一段中的“Maya emphasizes that the garden is not a production unit but a learning space. Maya suggested they should not do any landscaping in the school but let her create a school garden instead. The project was designed as a sparetime course, where students could learn about organic farming—what Maya refers to as “regenerative agriculture”.( 2016年,她走进一所国际学校的校长办公室,提出了将学校花园作为跨学科学习空间的想法。Maya建议他们不应该在学校里做任何景观美化,而是让她创造一个学校花园。这个项目是作为一门业余课程设计的,学生们可以在这里学习有机农业,也就是Maya所说的“再生农业”。)”可知,Maya向一所全球学校的校长提议创建学校花园作为跨学科学习空间,还设计让学生学习有机农业(她称之为“再生农业”),这是一种创新的教育模式,体现了她具有创新精神。故选A。 C Ingenuity arrived on Mars alongside NASA’s Perseverance explorer in February 2021. Engineers of NASA fully investigated Ingenuity’s last flight on Mars for almost a year They found the cause of the crash was linked to the helicopter’s navigation (导航) system. Events related to the crash led to increased power demand, which resulted in the loss of communications. The Difficulty of Landing on Mars 【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. 根据第三段“NASA explained that Ingenuity’s navigation system plays a crucial role in collecting data about the surface to ensure the helicopter can complete a smooth landing. The helicopter uses a camera that points downward, gathering information about what is below the aircraft. In past flights, the engineers said the camera was able to find smooth, suitable landing possibilities. But NASA said during the final flight, the helicopter was traveling in an area with very few surface features for the camera to collect. This meant the helicopter’s navigation system could not find enough of these features to choose a good landing spot.( 美国宇航局解释说,Ingenuity的导航系统在收集火星表面数据方面发挥着至关重要的作用,以确保直升机能够顺利着陆。 根据倒数第二段中“Events related to the crash led to increased power demand, which resulted in the loss of communications.( 与坠机有关的事件导致电力需求增加,导致通信中断)”可知,与坠毁相关的事件导致了电力需求的增加,从而导致了通信的中断,所以主要是电力短缺导致 Ingenuity与美国国家航空航天局(NASA)失去联系。故选A项。 根据最后一段“Although the crash ended Ingenuity’s flight operations, NASA said it is still able to provide and send back weather information and other kinds of data. The space agency says this information could be invaluable in designing future aircraft or other explorers to be sent to Mars.( 虽然这次事故结束了Ingenuity的飞行操作,但美国宇航局表示,Ingenuity仍然能够提供并发回天气信息和其他类型的数据。 D Walkable communities are areas where the majority of services and goods are reachable without a car or public transportation. A Recovering. B. Ignoring. C. Strengthening. D. Damaging. 35. Which can boost the local economy according to Mr. Smith? A. Less greenhouse gas emissions. B. The limited dependence on cars. C. The improvement of public health. D. Close relationships among residents. B 33. C 34. C 35. 根据文章第一段中的“Walkable communities are areas where the majority of services and goods are reachable without a car or public transportation.(适宜步行的社区是指大多数服务和商品无需借助汽车或公共交通工具就能便捷抵达的区域。)” 根据第二段“Where a person settles down can directly affect the lifestyle habits they have. Researchers discovered that each 1 percent increase in an area’s walkability led to a 0.42 percent increase in people actually walking around the neighborhood. Research supports the idea that more walkable communities would be a net positive for society, especially as a way to help people extend their lifespans and their health spans—the number of years a person is able to function in good condition.(一个人定居的地方会直接影响他们的生活习惯。 根据划线单词后的“putting roots down in a walkable neighborhood can significantly increase a family’s overall wellness and quality of life(在一个步行友好的社区扎根可以显著提升一个家庭的整体健康和生活质量。)” 根据第四段中的 “Additionally, more walkable areas facilitate the local economy as strong social ties tend to support small businesses.(此外,更具可步行性的区域有利于当地经济,因为牢固的社会关系往往会支持小企业。)” Avalanche dogs help locate skiers and snowboarders buried in the snow. As an advantage, dogs don’t require equipment like people do. A 37. G 38. F 39. E 40. 【36题详解】 根据下文“They are left to a handler, an owner who will take charge of their training but also care for them like a beloved pet. That first winter, handlers will ski around with dogs in their jackets to make them get used to resort life and all the sights, sounds, and smells that come with being a rescue dog.(它们被交给训犬师,一个负责训练它们的主人,但也会像照顾心爱的宠物一样照顾它们。第一个冬天,训犬员会带着穿着夹克的狗到处滑雪,让它们适应度假村的生活,以及作为救援犬所要经历的所有风景、声音和气味。)”可以推知,本段是描述狗狗开始训练以及训练初期的情况,A项“当狗还很小的时候,训练就开始了”符合语境,故选A。 【37题详解】 根据上文“First, the dog is familiarized with human scent (气味) thanks to plenty of time with the handler. Then, in runaway training, the handler gets the dog excited, tells it to stay, runs away and hides.(首先,狗狗熟悉了人类的气味,这要归功于与训练员相处的大量时间。然后,在逃跑训练中,训导员让狗兴奋起来,告诉它留下来,跑开并躲藏起来)”可知,本段描述了“逃跑训练”的过程,训练者躲藏起来,狗狗需要找到他。G项“最后,它必须通过命令找到隐藏的驯犬师”衔接了这一训练过程。故选G。 【38题详解】 上文“Dogs have a very impressive sense of smell.(狗的嗅觉非常灵敏)”提到狗的嗅觉非常灵敏。F项“这使它们在寻找被雪埋住的人时表现得非常出色”,将狗狗的嗅觉与救援能力联系起来,引出下文“That’s because humans give out something called skin-rafts, which are lighter than air, so they go up through the snow and collect on top of it in a sort of pool.(这是因为人类会释放出一种叫做皮筏的东西,这种东西比空气还轻,所以它们会穿过雪,聚集在雪的顶部,形成一个类似水池的东西)”。故选F。 【39题详解】 根据下文中的“Because even if humans were able to discover these scent pools, they cannot skillfully navigate deep snow. Even equipped with snowshoes, humans will find it hard to move quickly while dogs have little trouble jumping over and through it.(因为即使人类能够发现这些气味池,他们也无法熟练地在深雪中穿行。即使穿上雪鞋,人类也很难快速移动,而狗却可以轻松地跳过雪)”可知,狗狗在深雪中比人类更灵活,即使人类穿着雪鞋也难以快速移动。E项“确实,狗狗的敏捷性是它们最终的优势”符合语境。故选E。 【40题详解】 根据下文“This all makes them the ultimate avalanche rescue tool for those who have been trapped in the deep snow.(这一切都使它们成为那些被困在深雪中的人的终极雪崩救援工具)”可知,空处是描述狗狗的各种优势,C项“它们持久耐用,装备精良,能应对恶劣天气”符合语境。 While undergoing treatment, I returned to work. 故填and。 分析句子可知,“Once largely ____ (produce)”是省略句,完整形式为“Once it is largely produced”,“it”指代“the CR450”,“it”与“produce”之间是被动关系,所以用过去分词“produced”。 “experience”在此处表示“一次经历”,是可数名词,“a more efficient and convenient travel experience”表示“一次更高效、更便捷的旅行体验”,所以用不定冠词“a”。故填a。 此处是“with + 宾语 + 宾语补足语”的复合结构,在句中作状语,说明“Energy efficiency has been optimized”的具体情况,所以用介词“with”。故填with。 故填which。 分析句子结构,“____ (guarantee) the successful rollout of the CR450” 在句中作目的状语,“to do”形式可以作目的状语,所以用“to guarantee”,句首单词首字母大写。故填To guarantee。 AI and Me ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: AI and Me Nowadays, Al has stepped into our daily life. I was a single mother of two little kids — one aged 2 and the other aged 7. I was on sick leave due to a motor-vehicle accident, and no benefits had come in. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: After David left, I suddenly remembered a pair of boots that had belonged to my husband. They were strong and warm, perfect for the freezing weather. I quickly went to fetch them, hoping to catch up with David before he disappeared into the cold. But when I stepped outside, he was nowhere to be seen. Determined, I wrapped the boots in a bag and walked down the street, searching for him. After a few blocks, I spotted his figure in the distance. I ran to him and handed over the boots. His eyes were filled with tears again as he thanked me, his voice trembling with gratitude. The following Christmas, a package from a man named David was delivered at my doorstep. Inside were warm blankets, canned food, and a note that read, “Thank you for your kindness to an old man. May this holiday season bring you joy.” I suddenly realized it was from the old man David. Tears filled my eyes as I realized he had somehow found a way to repay me. It struck me then that he might have been a mysterious angel, sent to remind me that even in the hardest times, small acts of kindness can bring light to our lives. That Christmas, I learned that giving, no matter how little it is, can create miracles. 词汇激活 行为类 ①包,裹:wrap/parcel ②寻找:search for /look for/seek for ③某人突然想起:It struck sb that.../It occurred to sb that... 情绪类 ①感激:gratitude/appreciation ②快乐:joy/delight/happiness 【点睛】【高分句型1】I quickly went to fetch them, hoping to catch up with David before he disappeared into the cold.
