As a female athlete, I’ve always worked hard to push myself to my limits and with that usually come some aches and pains. So last year when I started to feel some muscle discomfort after a tough workout, at first I didn’t think it was a big deal. I was training for a marathon at the time, so over the weekend I’d done a 20-kilometre run.
The following Tuesday I hit my favourite Cross Fit gym to do a workout that involved a lot of upper body weight lifting. My trainer told me to take it easy on my body, but I figured I’d be fine and powered through it. Afterward, my trainer noticed a slight swelling(肿胀) in my arm and said he was worried. I tried to brush him off but he insisted I drink a lot of water and check in with him in a few hours. Sure enough, by that afternoon the swelling had increased and I headed to the doctor. I still thought he was making a mountain out of a molehill but I trusted my trainer so I did it.
The doctor took one look at me and diagnosed(诊断) me with rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening condition where muscle overuse causes kidney(肾)failure. As they gave me IV liquids to clear out the poisons, my doctor told me that if I’d waited even another 30 minutes, we would have been having this discussion in the emergency room. Things were touch-and-go over the weekend but I made a full recovery, thanks in no small part to my trainer. I was a very experienced CrossFitter and still hadn’t seen any problems. Thankfully I had a great trainer I could trust; he saved my life.
24. What did the author first think of his muscle suffering?
A. Something unusual. B. Nothing serious. C. Hard to bear. D. Easy to find.
25. What did the author’s trainer insist on doing?
A. Accompanying her to see a doctor. B. Instructing her through the workout.
C. Getting informed of her condition later. D. Stop her powering through the exercise.
26. What did the doctor’s words imply?
A. Half-an-hour delay could kill. B. The emergency room mattered.
C. More discussion was necessary. D. Muscle exercise was dangerous.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recollect her trainer’s instructions.
B. To introduce her workout experiences.
C. To remind others of the power of trust in doctors.
D. To express her sincere thankfulness to her trainer.

A worldwide study published last month in the journal Nature Climate Change found global warming responsible for 37 percent of heat-related deaths between 1991 and 2018. As temperatures climb ever higher, that figure may well rise.
The following is what happens if you’re one of the next people whom extreme heat kills, according to W. Lawrence Kenney, an expert at Penn State University.
First, your brain sends a series of messages to your sweat glands (腺) telling them to increase sweat production. Then your heart starts beating faster to pump blood to the skin while blood flow is also directed away from some of your internal organs. That’s your body attempting to make your skin hotter than the air outside, in hopes of creating a convection (对流) phenomenon that moves heat away from you. Sometimes that alone is enough to create problems for a weak or aging heart.
If heat attack occurs, your body might get so hot and shift so much oxygen-rich blood to the skin that it suffocates (窒息) those vital internal organs, which become oxygen-starved. Surviving the organ failure that follows might require an emergency transplant.
If your body fails to cool you down, its internal temperature might start to climb to somewhere closer to 104 degrees and 105 degrees. “These are the situations where people die of classical heat attack,” Kenney said.
At that temperature, the tissue s in the brain become affected. You may feel it start as a dull headache. Before long, you might not know where you are or what time it is. You might collapse. Left untreated, what follows is a series of organ failure that leads to all but certain death.
We are learning more about how to avoid overheating. The most likely guarantee against dying of extreme heat is preventing the rise of global temperatures. However, achieving that goal requires rapidly and dramatically reducing fossil fuel use and finding ways to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than we release. Efforts so far have remained awfully insufficient. Global oil demand, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries predicted last month, will jump greatly.
28. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The function of sweat glands. B. The body’s heat-loss principle.
C. The working principle of skin. D. The cause of an aging heart.
29. What directly claims people’s lives?
A. Heat waves. B. Lack of oxygen. C. Dull headache. D. Organ failure.
30. How does the author feel about human’s current efforts to prevent global warming?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disappointed. D. Satisfied.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. How Heat Waves Destroy the Human Body
B. Global Warming Leads to More Problems
C. How Extreme Weather Affects Our Life
D. Global Warming Attracts Public Attention

In the fast-developing landscape of education, technology has been a game-changer, and DeepSeek, an advanced artificial intelligence, is making waves. DeepSeek’s applications in education are diverse and impactful, bringing about a new era of learning experiences.
One of the primary ways DeepSeek benefits education is in personalized learning. Every student has a unique learning pace and style. DeepSeek can analyze a student’s performance data, including test scores, assignment completion times, and areas of difficulty. By processing this vast amount of information, it creates customized study plans. For example, if a student struggles with algebra in math, DeepSeek can generate additional practice problems, provide step-by-step video instructions, and even suggest alternative teaching methods that best suit the student's learning style.
DeepSeek also serves as an intelligent coaching system. It is available around the clock, ready to answer students’ questions instantly. Whether it’s a complex physics concept or a grammar issue in language learning, DeepSeek can break down the problem, offer detailed explanations, and guide students through the solution process. This immediate feedback not only helps students solve their current problems but also encourages them to take initiative in learning.
Moreover, in the field of curriculum (课程) design, DeepSeek provides valuable assistance to educators. It can analyze educational trends, emerging topics, and best practices from around the world. Based on this analysis, it can offer suggestions for updating curricula, ensuring that students are learning relevant and up-to-date content. For instance, in a rapidly changing subject like computer science, DeepSeek can help educators incorporate the latest programming languages and technological advancements into the curriculum.
In addition, DeepSeek can enhance language learning. It can simulate real-life conversations, helping students practice speaking and improve their pronunciation. Through voice recognition technology, it corrects students’ pronunciation errors and provides instant feedback, much like having a personal language coach.
However, like any technology, DeepSeek also has its limitations. It lacks true human empathy (共情) and emotional connection, which are important in the learning process. But overall, its potential to transform education is undeniable.
32. How does DeepSeek help in personalized learning?
A. By offering one-on-one physical instructions.
B. By creating and providing tailored study plans.
C. By randomly assigning study materials to students.
D. By asking students to follow a fixed learning pattern.
33. How does DeepSeek assist in curriculum design?
A. It replaces educators in designing curricula.
B. It concentrates on traditional educational content.
C. It creates all the teaching materials for educators.
D. It gives suggestions based on its relevant analysis.
34. What does the underlined word “incorporate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Change. B. Translate. C. Develop. D. Integrate.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The transformation of education by DeepSeek.
B. The application of DeepSeek in various fields.
C. DeepSeek’s limitations in improving education.
D. The development process of DeepSeek in education.

World Wildlife Day will take place on Monday, March 3. One way to celebrate the wild animals that live all around us — and to educate others about their importance — is to make a nature documentary. ___36___ Here’s how you can get started.
Pick a theme
First, decide what you would like your nature documentary to be about. Do you want to to film wildlife that lives outside your home, or would you rather ask an adult to go with you to a nearby park or nature preserve? ___37___ For example, think about the animals that live in your region and the species you are more likely to see during daylight hours.
___38___
Once you decide what to film, do some deeper research on your subject. Take notes that can help you look for interesting facts to film. For example, what are some of the animal’s feeding habits? Research the physical differences you might spot between males and females of the same species, from size to color to behavior.
Film and edit
You don’t need advanced equipment to make a nature documentary. You can use a video camera or a phone with a camera. ___39___ When you’re ready to film, stay a comfortable distance from wildlife so you don't frighten away your subject. You can also film an introduction: Put your camera in selfie mode, introduce yourself, and let the audience know why you chose your subject. Finally, you can use a free app like iMovie or CapCut to edit your film and add titles.
Host a screening
___40___ You can have a screening at home or check with your local library about the availability of a meeting room. After the screening, have a question and answer session so audience can ask you about your documentary. Finally, thank everyone for coming!
A Do your research
B. Explore wildlife spots
C. Do some research and choose local wildlife that interests you.
D. All you need to create this nonfiction film is a camera and a subject.
E. Also, pay attention to the weather forecast before you go out to film.

Mr Lim had been in a bad mood ever since he lost his job three months ago. His efforts to find another job had been fruitless as well. To make ends meet, his wife, Mrs Lim, had to take on an overseas job offer. This meant that Mr Lim was left to tend to his two children, Luke and Lisa, all by himself. Seeing their father being so unhappy every day, Luke and Lisa wanted badly to cheer him up. On the day of Mr. Lim’s birthday, the children decided to turn their intention into action.
“Hurry, Luke! Dad will be home anytime now! Let’s hide to surprise him!” Lisa said. After placing the birthday cake they had bought on the table, something that Luke and Lisa were sure Mr Lim would not have expected, they hid under it. It had taken the children many weeks to save enough money to buy their father’s favourite cake.
They smiled at each other when the smell of fresh paint reached their nose. Luke and Lisa had painted on their dining area’s wall, intending that to be decoration for Mr Lim’s surprise birthday party. Moments later, the main door creaked (嘎吱作响) open. Suddenly, a loud shout filled the air!
“Who messed up the wall on purpose?” Mr Lim shouted angrily. On hearing those words, Luke and Lisa stared at each other in shock. As the elder brother, Luke knew he had to protect Lisa. Taking a deep breath, Luke slowly moved out from under the table. Before he could say a word, Mr Lim gave him an earful (长时间的斥责). Hoping to clear up the misunderstanding, Luke said, “Dad, you’re wrong. We just wanted to...”
“Don’t you dare give me excuses!” Mr Lim raised his voice. Then, with great force, he threw the newspaper he had been holding at the dining table. It hit the birthday cake, ruining it! Seeing that, Luke’s heart broke. He cried.
“Dad ... we ... we’re sorry! We wanted to give ... give you a birthday sur ... surprise,” Lisa explained in between cries, after moving out from her hiding spot.

Hearing that, Mr. Lim fell silent for a moment before approaching Luke. He looked at his two children with a mixture of shock and remorse in his eyes. He knelt down, gently wiping away Luke’s tears and said, “I’m so sorry, son. I’ve been so caught up in my own troubles that I didn’t see your love and effort. This is the most special birthday gift I could have ever received.” He then hugged Luke tightly, and soon Lisa joined in, their little bodies trembling with the remnants of fear and relief. Mr. Lim realized how selfish he had been, drowning in his own sorrow while his children were trying their best to bring joy to his life.
After the tension eased, Luke and Lisa sang a birthday song for Mr. Lim. Their voices, though a bit shaky from the earlier incident, were filled with love. Mr. Lim listened with tears in his eyes, feeling an overwhelming sense of warmth and happiness. Despite the ruined cake and the painted wall, this was the most precious moment for him. As they finished the song, Mr. Lim kissed his children on their foreheads, promising them that from then on, he would face life’s difficulties with a more positive attitude and cherish every moment with his family.
