My daughter is a smart kid,but she'd never read an entire chapter book for pleasure. She
had never developed any habit of classic deep reading-with two eyes in front of paper, and
nothing else going on.When I faced this truth,it felt like a parenting failure.Even though we'd
read many storybooks when she was younger and we lived in a house filled with books,I hadn't
managed to instill (one of life's basic pleasures in my kid.
As a lifelong reader,I understand how reading improves the fabric of our experience.Yet
my daughter claimed to dislike reading.I told her reading novels was the best way to learn about
高二英语ZT(B卷)·第4页(共12页)
how people's insides work. She said she could learn more from the people on social media, who
were all about spilling their insides.I said books offered storytelling. She said,"Smartphones."
I said books taught history.She said,"The Internet."
I could not win our debates, because few of my daughter's arguments against reading
seemed wrong to me.Yes,reading is a way to discover new worlds-so is the entire Internet.
But that's not why I wanted my daughter to pick up a book.It was about experiencing a certain
magic. You know when an author describes a feeling you didn't have, and a hundred light
bulbs go off on the top of your head?I wanted her to have a chance at feeling that.A
screen-based medium can't create this kind of relationship because,by its nature, the medium
must fill in all the blanks for you.Books leave space for blanks-and for the internal invention
they can inspire.
So I decided to cut through all the reasoning with a cold, hard practicality:cash.I told my
11-year-old I would pay her 100 to read a novel within a month.Of course,she said yes.She
finished the book in seven days. Then she even asked for the sequel ()-at no extra
charge. Will this lead to her reading Little Women? Will it result in a lifelong habit of reading?I
don't know. What I do know is that I finally opened a new door for her to the printed page. That
feels like the best money I ever spent.
24.What situation does the author face?
A.Failing to get along well with her daughter.
B.Failing to meet her daughter's emotional needs.
C.Failing to develop a reading habit in her daughter.
D.Failing to provide enough storybooks in the house.
25.Why does the author want her daughter to read books?
A.To help her fill in all the blanks.
B.To help her discover new worlds.
C.To help her spend less time on the Internet.
D.To let her feel a moment of deep connection.
26.How does the author feel about spending $100 to encourage her daughter to read?
A.She regrets spending the money.
B.She feels disappointed with the final outcome.
C.She is unsure if it will lead to a love of reading.
D.She is confident in her daughter's future choices

27.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.The Magic of Books in a Digital Age
B.Creating a Reader:A Mother's Journey
C.Encouraging Reading:Tips for Children
D.The Decline of Reading Among Children

To Karanth, everyone in every part of the world is born with a basic connection to nature.
Growing up in Karnataka, she began accompanying her father into the wild at just two years old.
But in her hometown, kids grew up with a negative view on wildlife.Elephants destroyed crops
and sometimes people were badly injured or killed.Karanth discovered kids wouldn't realize that
it's the best place to watch the wonderful animals.
In 2017,a conversation with her friend Gabby changed her attitude towards education.
Within half a year,Karanth and Gabby had the first version of "Wild Shaale"on their hands.A
program designed for students who come into frequent contact with wildlife,Wild Shaale aims to
develop a real understanding of wildlife and wild spaces and move from conflicts with wildlife to
animal and environmental protection. The conservation education program fills a gap in
environmental learning.
Although it is fortunate that a basic environmental education is supported by the local
government,Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality of the curriculum and whether it's
delivered effectively and consistently."You have to imagine what these schools look like. They
may not have electricity-forget having computers,Internet,iPads,or anything."
Encouraging the students to find common points between themselves and the animals is the
first step to changing views and hopefully, behaviors."It comes down to the same things:we
need food;we need water;we need space. Then they start to understand why situations of
conflict appear,"Karanth says."But then how do you persuade them not to get angry, not to act
in a way that leads to harm? That's something we're trying to work on.It's not easy."
28.What problem might Karanth's hometown have faced?
A.Loss of wildlife habitats.
B.Human-wildlife conflict.
C.Overpopulation of elephants.
D.Disregard for wildlife balance.
高二英语ZT(B卷)·第6页(共12页)
29.Why did Karanth launch the program Wild Shaale?
A.To help students identify animals.
B.To fill a gap in local education.
C.To improve students'understanding of wildlife.
D.To publicize wildlife diversity.
30.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The barrier to the program.
B.The support to the plan.
C.The curriculum arrangement.
D.The schools'conditions.
31.What is Karanth trying to achieve in the program?
A.A change in humans'attitudes and behavior.
B.Approaches to changing animals'behavior.
C.A breakthrough in environmental studies.
D.Suitable ways to end local conflicts.

The Earth's population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050.Experts estimate food
production will have to increase by 70 percent to keep pace with that growth.Previous methods of
agriculture will soon no longer be a choice.According to a 2018 study,we have to turn away
from meat and dairy products.
U.S.customers have proved themselves willing to test the waters.Americans spent $1.4
billion on plant-based meat in 2021,representing a market share of 2.7 percent of all meat
sales. The plant-based food companies claim their burgers use less land and water and produce
less greenhouse gases. But,consider the possibility that we left our most promising resource
behind in the ocean. Will you eat seaweed for meat?
“I think seaweed needs branding(品牌),”says Mark Kulsdom,co--founder of the Dutch
Weed Burger. As Kulsdom explained Dutch Weed Burgers are vegetarian but for meat eaters.A
decade after launching their first product,he and his partners now sell about quarter of a million
burgers each year.
Finally,Kulsdom is striving for a culture change."I believe we need to raise interest
sometimes by using a bit of an unorthodox(非正统的)approach to things,”he adds.“When

people get what they already know,it's not that interesting. When their curiosity is awakened,
that's when new things and ideas can enter their minds."
In 2008,researchers discovered 14,000-year-old seaweed fragments (H)in southern
Chile that had been pressed into cakes and clearly been cooked. As they wrote in Science, all
seaweed recovered at the site are excellent sources of iron, iodine, zinc, protein, hormones and
a wide range of elements.Though Mark Kulsdom's Dutch Weed Burger sounds futuristic, one
could argue that they're revisiting one of the oldest stories we know.
32.How are plant-based burgers according to the companies?
A.They are healthy
B.They are nutritious.
C.They are delicious.
D.They are environmentally friendly.
33.What does the underlined word "striving"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Struggling.
B.Leaving.
C.Preparing.
D.Refusing.
34.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Chile is rich in seaweed.
B.People have long been using seaweed as food.
C.Seaweed was the only main food source in Chile.
D.Mark Kulsdom's Dutch Weed Burger is too futuristic.
35.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A textbook.
B.A science fiction.
C.A travel guide.
D.A newspaper.

Lily and Jack exchanged anxious looks, their minds racing for solutions.Jack quickly took off
his backpack and looked through it,finding a bandage to wrap Emma’s foot as best as he
could.“We can’t leave her here,” Lily said firmly, her voice echoing with determination. They
made a temporary stretcher using branches and their jackets, carefully placing Emma on it.The
going was slow and difficult as they navigated the rough path.Every step was a struggle, but their
bond as friends kept them going. As the afternoon passed, tiredness began to set in.
Just when they felt tired and hungry,Lily found a village in the distance.Heart pounding with
hope, they made their way towards it.To their joy, they found a well-used path that led down to the
village. With renewed energy, they quickened their pace. Finally, they reached the small village at
the foot of the mountain. The villagers,kind-hearted and helpful, provided them with food and
shelter, and called for medical help for Emma.Safe and sound,Lily,Jack, and Emma learned the
true meaning of friendship and courage in the face of adversity.
