They were less than 6 inches tall and lived in the island country of Lilliput. After he promised to follow their rules, they set him free and he could visit the city. Gulliver learnt about the war between Lilliput and Blefuscu and helped the king: he pulled large Blefuscu ships to Lilliput. The king was happy. He wanted to make the people of Blefuscu his slaves (奴隶), but Gulliver did not like this plan. The king got angry. Some bad men in Lilliput wanted to kill Gulliver. Gulliver had to run away from Lilliput to Blefuscu. He was welcomed by the king of Blefuscu. Three days later, he saw a boat of normal size— that is, big enough to carry him— overturned (翻倒) in the water. He asked the king of Blefuscu to help him fix it. Pain hurts us, but could it be good for us? Is pain in fact helpful? Pain is a way to tell us that something is wrong in our body. We should stop what we are doing to protect the body. For example, if you break your leg, pain stops you from walking on it. If you didn’t feel any pain, you would continue walking around and you could hurt your leg more. But why does it continue to hurt even after you have stopped walking on your hurt leg? That is because your body needs you to rest in order to have the energy to mend the broken bone. But how does pain work? We have special cells (细胞) in our skin, our eyes, and inside our bodies, too. When something goes wrong, these cells send messages to the brain. The brain then makes us feel pain so we will stop doing whatever is causing the pain. Put your hand into hot water, and your hand’s skin cell tell your muscles (肌肉) and your brain. Your muscles are able to move your hand away from the heat quickly. At the same time, your brain gets the message that something is wrong and you need to care for your hand. It all happens in less than a second. But do you know that the brain itself cannot feel pain? In fact, when doctors cut into the brain, they do not put the person to sleep. Because the person does not feel any pain in the brain, it is thought to be much safer if the person is awake while the doctor is working. 41. The passage is about ________. A. how people hurt themselves B. how pain helps protect the body C. how doctors work on the brain D. how the brain moves our bodies 42. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the second paragraph? A Pain. B. The hurt leg. C. The whole body. D. The people who feel pain. 43. How does pain work if you put the hand in the hot water according to the third paragraph? A. B. C. D. 44. Why don’t doctors put people to sleep when they work on the brain? A. It’s safer for people to stay awake. B. The brain is hurting itself. C. People feel more pain when sleeping. D. The doctors need to keep awake. 45 What would likely happen to people if they can’t feel pain? A. Their lives would not be difficult. B. Their body would grow healthier. C. They would get hurt more often. D. They would not be afraid of falling. 【答案】41. B 42. B 43. B 44. A 45. He worked as a doctor on a ship called the Antelope. On May 4, 1699, they were going to the Far East. One night, his ship crashed against the rocks. Gulliver was lucky to swim safely to a beach and fell asleep. When he woke up, he found himself a prisoner (囚犯) of tiny people. After about a month, the boat was ready and Gulliver set sail. He arrived safely back in England. —Taken from Gulliver’s Travels 36. How did Gulliver help the king of Lilliput? A. By fighting with Blefuscu. B. By pulling Blefuscu ships. C. By killing the king of Blefuscu. D. By catching the people of Blefuscu. 37. “He wanted to make the people of Blefuscu his slaves”. Travelling in Blefuscu. B. The War Between Lilliput and Blefuscu C. A Trip to the Land of Tiny People D. Sailing to England (B) What is the reason for pain (疼痛)? A. how people hurt themselves B. how pain helps protect the body C how doctors work on the brain D. how the brain moves our bodies 42. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the second paragraph? A. Pain. B. The hurt leg. C. The whole body. D. The people who feel pain. 43. How does pain work if you put the hand in the hot water according to the third paragraph? A B. C. D. 44. Why don’t doctors put people to sleep when they work on the brain? A. It’s safer for people to stay awake. B. The brain is hurting itself. C. People feel more pain when sleeping. D. The doctors need to keep awake. 45. What would likely happen to people if they can’t feel pain? A. Their lives would not be difficult. B. Their body would grow healthier. C. They would get hurt more often. D. They would not be afraid of falling. (C) Mark works at Sunrise Tourist Information Centre.
