In the 1970s, Leonor Drago, living in a small town in Portugal, never imagined she would one day travel internationally. Her dream destinations, like the United States, seemed distant and unreachable. At the time, her family could not afford to travel abroad, and the idea of leaving her hometown was unimaginable.
However, everything changed in 1975 when Leonor received a letter from Michelle Anderson, a 12-year-old girl from the United States. They quickly became pen pals (笔友), exchanging letters about their lives. Despite living on different countries, they developed a strong bond (关系), sharing their interests in poetry, movies, and everyday experiences.
Michelle, curious about other cultures, had decided to find a pen pal from abroad. Spinning (快速旋转) the globe, she freely chose a town in Portugal near Moura, where Leonor lived. Leonor received Michelle’s letter after it was passed to her from another student, and the two girls began writing to each other regularly.
Through their letters, Leonor learned about American culture, and Michelle discovered life in Portugal. They sent pictures, stickers, and small gifts, strengthening their friendship despite the challenges of snail mail. For Leonor, this bond made the idea of visiting the United States seem less impossible.
After several years of mails, Michelle saved up money by babysitting for three years to visit Leonor in Portugal. In 1980, she finally made the trip, marking the first time the two friends met in person. They spent three weeks together, exploring Portugal and living as part of each other’s daily lives.
Though they faced many years without meeting in person, Leonor and Michelle continued their friendship through letters, emails, and later, video calls. In 2022, Leonor visited Michelle in the US, fulfilling a long-held dream. The two friends spent several days together, exploring New York City and sharing important memories.
Now in their 60s, Leonor and Michelle remain close, always staying in touch through WhatsApp and emails. They feel fortunate to have maintained such a deep connection over the years.
4. Why did Leonor think travelling internationally was impossible in the 1970s?
A. She was living a poor life. B. She was too young to travel alone.
C. She didn’t have a passport. D. She didn’t have a rich friend.
5. How did Michelle find a pen pal?
A. She was helped to find a pen pal by her teacher.
B. She spun the globe and chose a town.
C. Her mother found a pen pal for her.
D. She chose a pen pal from a school list.
6. What does the underlined word “fulfilling” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. Learning. B. Imagining. C. Realizing. D. Catching.
7. What can be inferred about Leonor and Michelle’s friendship over the years?
A. They stopped communicating after a few years.
B. Their friendship grew stronger over time.
C. They only stayed in touch when meeting in person.
D. They began to feel distant as they grew older.
C
Used electric vehicle (EV) prices have seen big changes. In 2022, when electric cars were popular and hard to find, some models were selling for more on the used market than they had when new. Now that there are more than 100 EV models available (可获得的), resale values for some models have dropped a lot.
EVs lose about 49% of their value in five years, more than other cars which lose 39%, says iSeeCars.com. Tesla’s price cuts for new cars and Hertz selling 30,000 EVs have affected prices. New models from brands like Hyundai and Ford have also made the market more competitive.
However, newer models with better batteries (电池) have held their value pretty well, according to John Helveston, a professor at George Washington University. Helveston says their value loss is getting closer to that of gas cars, but it’s not the same yet.
You can lease (租赁) an EV to avoid big drops in value or tech becoming old. When the lease ends, the dealer deals with the loss. Or, you can buy a used EV that has already lost value. Some say used EVs are now cheaper than used gas cars.
People look at the price when buying a car. New EVs cost more than other cars, but you can save with lower costs for gas and maintenance (维修). An electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup costs much less to charge than filling up a gas one. EVs need less maintenance because they don’t need oil changes and have fewer parts that can break.
It’s hard to put a price on the environment. EVs make fewer greenhouse gases and don’t produce pollutants that cause health problems. Many people will enjoy the peace of mind that comes from driving an EV. Whether it’s worth paying more for these benefits is up to you.
8. Why have used EVs seen a sharp drop in resale values?
A. Customers have more choices. B. There is a rise in the gas prices.
C. New batteries are getting cheap. D. There are few popular models.
9. What is the author’s attitude towards leasing an EV?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.
10. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about EVs?
A. Their prices. B. Their changes.
C. Their benefits. D. Their weaknesses.
11. What does the author intend to say about buying an EV from the last paragraph?
A. It’s good for our environment.
B. It’s a difficult decision for customers.
C. It pushes people to care about driving habits.
D. It should be encouraged among all the drivers.
D
The idea of a global network for sharing information was first raised by J. C. R. Licklider from MIT in 1962. He called it the “Galactic Network”, where people could easily access data and programmes from any computer. Thisidea was similar to the Internet we use today. Licklider, who was the head of the computer research programme at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), talked to other experts, like Ivan Sutherland, Bob Taylor, and Lawrence Roberts, hoping that they could support the idea.
Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on packet switching (分组交换技术) theory in July 1961 and the first book on the subject in 1964. The theory was a major step along the path towards computer networking. The other key step was to make the computers talk together. To explore this, in 1965 working with Thomas Merrill, Roberts connected the TX-2 computer in Mass to the Q-32 in California with a low speed dial-up telephone line creating the first wide-area computer network ever built. The result of this experiment was the realization that the time-shared computers could work well together using packet switching.
In 1966, Roberts joined DARPA and worked on a plan to develop a computer network, which he called ARPANET. By 1968, after improving the ARPANET plan, DARPA asked for bids (招标) to develop the network’s key parts. The contract went to Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), led by Frank Heart. In 1969, BBN set up the first packet-switching computer at UCLA, making it the first node (节点) of ARPANET. Stanford Research Institute (SRI) was connected soon after, marking the beginning of the network.
By the end of 1969, ARPANET had four nodes, marking the birth of the Internet. Over the next few years, the network grew quickly, and in 1970, the first protocol (协议) for ARPANET, called the Network Control Protocol (NCP), was developed. Two years later, email, a “hot” application on the network, was introduced and it quickly grew in use.
ARPANET’s success cleared the path for the modern Internet, changing the way people communicated and shared information worldwide.
12. Who came up with the idea “Galactic Network”?
A. Bob Taylor. B. J. C. R. Licklider. C. Ivan Sutherland. D. Lawrence Roberts.
13. What can we infer about Roberts’ experiment in 1965?
A. It marked the birth of the modern Internet.
B. It forced Roberts to stop his study on computers.
C. It made private computers become a practical tool.
D. It showed packet switching was a workable solution.
14. When was email first introduced on the network?
A. In 1968. B. In 1969. C. In 1970. D. In 1972.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Strengths of the Emails B. The History of Computers
C. Origins of the Internet D. The Use of Messaging Tools

Sophia had always loved music. From the moment she could tap her tiny fingers on the piano keys, melodies (旋律) seemed to pour from her soul. Her parents were often amazed at her natural talent, and her music teacher, Mrs. Carlson, claimed she was a talent. Encouraged by their praise, Sophia decided to enter the Harmony Youth Music Competition.
Months of preparation followed. Every day after school, Sophia practised tirelessly, her fingers dancing across the keys of the family’s old piano. Her chosen piece was a challenging one — Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Though it tested her skills, she poured her heart into every note, determined to make it perfect.
As the competition day neared, an unexpected guest began to shadow Sophia — anxiety. No matter how hard she practised, a small, continuing voice whispered doubts in her ear. What if you forget the notes? What if you make a mistake in front of everyone?
On the day of the competition, her hands shook as she waited backstage. When her name was called, she walked to the grand piano under the spotlight, her heart pounding louder than the applause. She sat down, placed her fingers on the keys, and began to play.
But halfway through, her mind went empty. Her fingers hesitated, hitting a sour note that echoed (回荡) through the silent hall. The whispers in her mind turned into a loud sound of self-doubt. Tears blurred (使视线模糊) her eyes as she performed the rest of the piece. When the performance ended, the polite applause felt like knives to her heart. She left the stage defeated.
“I can’t do it,” she told Mrs. Carlson later that evening, crying into her hands. “I’m just not good enough.” Mrs. Carlson gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “Sophia, failure is not the end. It’s a stepping stone. Do you want to try again?”

【答案】Dear Mike,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks for returning my wallet, which I accidentally left at the bus stop yesterday. It was incredibly kind of you to take the time to bring it back to me, especially since we don’t know each other personally.
Your thoughtfulness and effort have truly touched me. It is rare to meet someone as considerate as you. If there is ever anything I can do to return the favour, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Sophia hesitated but then nodded. She knew deep down she couldn’t let one bad experience define her. With Mrs. Carlson’s encouragement, Sophia signed up for a smaller, local competition. This time, they focused not just on her technique but on building her confidence. Mrs. Carlson introduced Sophia to breathing exercises and visualization techniques to calm her nerves. Slowly but surely, Sophia began to feel a change within herself.
On the day of the local competition, Sophia felt nervous but ready. As she stepped onto the stage, she took a deep breath, visualized the notes, and let her fingers glide over the keys. The anxiety was there, but she didn’t let it control her. The music flowed from her heart, and when she played the final note, the audience erupted into applause. Sophia won first place. More than the trophy, the experience taught her a lesson she would carry forever: failure is just a pause, not an ending. With perseverance and belief in oneself, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
